Why only primary school going back?

Just that really, why do they only want to get primary school back?

Schools won’t open until staff are safe.

TeddyIsaHe · 10/05/2020 19:54

Schools are already open.

Clavinova · 10/05/2020 19:54

THERE WONT BE ANY SOCIAL DISTANCING IN EARLY YEARS AND RECEPTION.

BBC - "In most German states children under six years old do not have to wear masks." Under 7 in some states.

Threadbaretoe · 10/05/2020 19:54

I think it's because of the evidence of low viral load and little transmission in under 6s.

MossWalk · 10/05/2020 19:55

It’s about getting young children back into routine
If it's not safe for Y2,3,4 and 5, to be in school then R and 1 will need to socially distance. This will be very difficult. It will not be anything like their previous routine.

getting young children that are being abused daily back into a safe space
Because children aren't abused in Y2? or pre-school? If they were concerned about abuse they would be employing more social workers.

derxa111 · 10/05/2020 19:56

What about after school clubs?

lilgreen · 10/05/2020 19:56

Open to whole year groups obviously!!! I work in one.

GetOutOfThereHoggle · 10/05/2020 19:56

Each household have different situations. For me... i can work from home and will have my year 3 here anyway... and having my two together means I can work more easily as they occupy each other. Lots of people not in same situation though... just hope they don't enforce R and Y1 going back or I'll be getting letters..

QuixoticQuokka · 10/05/2020 19:57

@Notcontent I have had to leave my young teen and work full time through lockdown, except for the first two weeks when I'm fairly certain I had the virus and got to stay home. Luckily the school has offered a place so he will be going back to school, I've been worried sick about him.

TeddyIsaHe · 10/05/2020 19:57

@MossWalk I’ve said this plenty of times if you rtft: there will be no social distancing for young children.

Mintychoc1 · 10/05/2020 19:57

No logic at all. Reception and year 1 are the ones who need school the least, and are the hardest to keep 2 metres apart.
I’m absolutely gutted for my year 10 child and all his peers.

derxa111 · 10/05/2020 19:57

If it's not safe for Y2,3,4 and 5, to be in school then R and 1 will need to socially distance.

That's a good point, if it's safe why not more years?

lilgreen · 10/05/2020 19:57

We have several shielding teachers so god knows how this will work! Nightmare.

Hunnybears · 10/05/2020 19:57

@ABucketOfShells

My year 1 isn’t going back this year, not even in September. (Nor is my youngest due to start in September). Probably not until there’s a vaccine or until there’s enough immunity it isn’t dangerous. I don’t need the childcare and nor am I playing roulette with my children’s lives. It’s only safe for them to return with social distancing, teachers want PPE and perhaps children in masks. It’s going to be stressful for children and teachers

You do realise there may never be a vaccine though??

ABucketOfShells · 10/05/2020 19:58

@Connie222 I think I need to start considering it most likely rather than a possibility.

tickertyboo · 10/05/2020 19:59

I don't trust a word this government says. We have the highest death rate in Europe; yet we're told to send our children back to school? It's simply about money again for this government. They continue not to give a fig about people's lives.

Barbie222 · 10/05/2020 19:59

@lilgreen I guess we know the order of return, and each school will take as many children as they can from the given year groups until they run out of available staff? They can't produce teachers who aren't able to work.

SophieB100 · 10/05/2020 20:00

You're all assuming that this return to school will happen. It was emphasised throughout that it will only happen "if, and only when" the country moves into a lower risk level. At the earliest June 1st. But that is conditional.

So, 3 weeks time - we will have a bit of an increase in cases because of all the people out and about yesterday and Friday. So the R number will rise right about the time some kids could go back if the R number was stabilised or reduced.

So best case scenario - some kids go back early June. But it was made very clear indeed that this is not guaranteed, and we have to be in a much better position with R number etc., for it to happen.

Judging by the behaviour this weekend, and the fact we have another Bank Holiday at the end of the month, I will be amazed if any schools open early June. Boris has put the emphasis on us - our behaviour - which will determine when places reopen. And it has to be that way because we are the population whose habits and social interaction will dictate the way out of this. And if people continue to break the lockdown, as they are increasingly doing, he will put the brakes on, and it will take much longer than it should.

FreakStar · 10/05/2020 20:00

Schools are already open with no protection for staff! Even with under 20 children in school it is impossible to keep them socially distanced. I've been in my school on a rota basis and it's impossible. Little ones fell over and needed first aid, shoe laces needed tying, children needed help with their work- you can't help a 4 year old child read from 2m away- they want to show you things, tell you things etc. 2m is a long way from a child! Teachers don't have PPE!

Mum2Girls19 · 10/05/2020 20:00

I dont understand it at all..
My eldest is transitioning to high school this year but her high school has put together a transition package online which is great.
And how do they transition if the high school isnt open...

MossWalk · 10/05/2020 20:01

@MossWalk I’ve said this plenty of times if you rtft: there will be no social distancing for young children.

Based on what evidence?

lilgreen · 10/05/2020 20:02

It’s ridiculous.Schools cannot keep your DC safe from covid 19. They will not socially distance, there is no extra cleaning gear or budget for deep cleaning, staff are shielding. Teachers are buying wipes and doing it themselves. If you can keep them home, do!

lilgreen · 10/05/2020 20:03

We can’t keep 6 apart at the moment!!

Parker231 · 10/05/2020 20:03

Employers are going to want their employees back at work, particularly if the furlough scheme finishes at the end of June so getting the schools open to more children is a step in the right direction.

FreakStar · 10/05/2020 20:04

How come so many of you seem to know the reasons why Y1 and R have been selected? I don't and I work in school!
