Why only primary school going back?

Just that really, why do they only want to get primary school back?

Its based on the vulnerable groups, reception and yr 1 are at a really key development stage and year 6 need to be able to transition. Those poor kids worked all year for the sodding sats and then had it all taken away.

bingandflop · 10/05/2020 19:19

A lot of Y6 transition cant happen, eg day at the secondary and a teacher from the secondary visiting them at their current school

pjmask · 10/05/2020 19:20

Surely Y2,3, 4,5 can’t look after themselves or be left on their own ? What’s the point? Are nurseries opening?

They can't look after themselves but the older the child the more effective wfh can be

HatRack · 10/05/2020 19:20

So kids age 6+ can look after themselves?

Connie222 · 10/05/2020 19:20

@Bluewavescrashing exactly. My Dd is year one. Not a chance in hell I’ll be sending her in.

pjmask · 10/05/2020 19:20

Why can't this happen?

Smellbellina · 10/05/2020 19:21

I imagine in our school we will split YR, 1 and 6 between all the classes and teachers to help social distancing, stagger lunch, breaks etc

derxa111 · 10/05/2020 19:21

What about kids under school age?

godyouareahhhhh · 10/05/2020 19:21

Why didn't he mention nurseries? If reception are going back I'm assuming nurseries will be too.

TeddyIsaHe · 10/05/2020 19:21

They don’t have to look after themselves.

Look it’s not aimed at making your life harder, it’s to get the economy back up. Parents of older children can WFH. Those with younger kids can’t. It makes sense to get the younger ones back so their parents can get on and get the economy back up.

mamaduckbone · 10/05/2020 19:21

Also with social distancing schools wouldn't have the space to have all pupils in at once. We worked out we can only have 5 pupils in each of our classrooms.
YR and Y1 absolutely can't social distance though.

Bluewavescrashing · 10/05/2020 19:22

Will parents be fined if we keep kids at home? I have one DC in ks1 and one in ks2. Both have asthma.

TeddyIsaHe · 10/05/2020 19:22

@Bluewavescrashing I highly doubt it, not ever ethical at all if they try to!

Samcj02 · 10/05/2020 19:23

@godyouareahhhhh my sister said on Sky news they apparently said nurseries are June 1 also x

ParkheadParadise · 10/05/2020 19:23

Thank God I'm in Scotland
That was a load of confusing shite.

Quartz2208 · 10/05/2020 19:24

I have a Year 2 and he is capable of entertaining himself while I work in a way he wouldnt have been a year ago so I do think that is part of it. Now the fact that is often Ipad or Nintendo Switch.

Cantbelievethebias · 10/05/2020 19:24

I thought it was a very clear message. It really wasn't difficult to understand at all.

stitchmaker85 · 10/05/2020 19:25

Neither of us can WFH but apparently we are now expected to go back to work and leave our Y2 child home alone Hmm

Whatsthis1515 · 10/05/2020 19:25

Does this mean that the other school year won't be going back this term at all?

AllianceOfCorcles · 10/05/2020 19:25

Cannot understand the logic of reception and year 1?
Year 6 completely agree the transition period is important.

TeddyIsaHe · 10/05/2020 19:25

Obviously if you can’t go to work due to having children at home you’ll stay furloughed.

AlfieandAnnieRose · 10/05/2020 19:25

We will have to implement horrible unnatural policies to keep them apart. Very worrying

I very much doubt that Early years children and year 1 will be asked to socially distance. Not just because it’s impossible but also because it would affect their emotional and social development negatively

Titsywoo · 10/05/2020 19:26

It's a real shame they are prioritising reception and year 1 over years 10 and 12. Those years can be caught up on - the exam years not so much. As many have said it's not about childcare if all the other primary years and nurseries aren't going back anyway!

Underhisi · 10/05/2020 19:26

Nothing said about children with sen or do they think wrongly that all children with an ehcp will be in school already.

TeddyIsaHe · 10/05/2020 19:26

Early years and reception are not expected to socially distance.

The govt is banking on children not spreading the virus and if they catch it having very mild symptoms.
