.. tell us how you think it should work. Primary or secondary.

In your ideal world.

How would social distancing be adhered to?
How about drop off and pick up?
How would classrooms operate?
How about lunchtimes and breaktimes?
What about after school childcare provision?
What about staff who are sheidling?
What about children who are sheilding?
What about staff who have family members who are sheilding?
Should only some children go back? Who should they be and why?

So many education and school experts on here, it will be interesting to read your safe solutions.

He bought ten face shield for his colleagues, since you ask.

Here we go

Here’s the science on just how hard it is for children to catch and pass on COVID19, even without social distancing measures at school and PPE. The doctors who wrote the paper have concluded on this basis, schools need to reopen.

oiboi · 08/05/2020 22:43

I work on the nhs. I did not sign up to be front line in a pandemic. I'm scared. I'm worried about my family. I am now front line working with affected patients. Don't turn on us.

Daffodil101 · 08/05/2020 22:44

That article is staggering

@Sonineties that looks reassuring until you realise they're just saying "open them (schools) and let's watch and learn more."

I don't know what to think having seen so many different scientific studies and opinions!

Cuddlecouch · 08/05/2020 22:49

I do think that if teachers pay was at risk then they would be more open to going back to work. Everyone i know who works in a non public sector role is terrified of redundancy, losing their home, long term unemployment and a lot of us are back to work on Monday. We have no choice and to be honest I'm keen to ensure I do my bit to keep the economy going. Public sector workers don't have the same worries at the moment re pay and this perhaps make them less likely to want to return until there is a vaccine. It would be interesting to know how many frontline teachers have died of covid (not those who have not been working in schools).

They never stopped.

Redundancies happen in the public sector as well, including in schools,. despite the propaganda.

Daffodil101 · 08/05/2020 23:01

My child is not being educated though.

Barbie222 · 08/05/2020 23:03

Why is that @Daffodil101?

Are you a key worker?

Does your child's school not set work?

Daffodil101 · 08/05/2020 23:12

We are both key workers. My friend works as a teacher in a neighbouring school. She told me it was selfish of me to send her into school if I could technically WFH.

School upload a maths worksheet on Monday and we have all week to do it. I’m not great at maths. I could do yesterday’s work. They won’t allow us to speak to them on the phone to ask for help.

So no, she’s not getting an education.

Parrotsandpussies · 08/05/2020 23:22

Teachers aren't against going back to work. We've all been working from home. Where required, we've been in school with the children of essential workers. We've seen how tricky it is, social distancing with only a handful of children in. Try comforting a 4 year old whilst maintaining a 2m distance. Try helping a child put on their coat, or putting on a plaster or even leading a group out to the playground when someone needs to hold the door open.
I'm desperate to go back to school. I would love it if it was absolutely the case that children couldn't pass on the virus. Then I could be the teacher I was before, the teacher I want to be. But until that is definitely proved to be the case, teachers are only saying that schools need to be able to run smoothly and safely before they open.

Sonineties · 08/05/2020 23:24

@Barbie222

That’s how science works - test a hypothesis, measure the data, reach a conclusion. We won’t know for sure if schools opening makes any difference unless we try it. And they have enough evidence from contact tracing to assess the risk of the trial as low.

Apart from the fact that school is vital for many kids, the other good reason for opening schools first (ahead of taking other measures) is that if the infection rate changes, it will be easy to see why.

awaywiththecircus · 08/05/2020 23:33

Why has my year 10s teacher not replied to an email she sent him a week ago? She’s doing GCSEs next year. If there’s no solution to getting kids back into school they need to start having proper education at home. I keep being told not to worry they’ll catch up. How exactly does a year 10 catch up? We parents need to start getting more reassurance it’s ridiculous.

Tigertrees · 08/05/2020 23:36

Maybe he's sick? Maybe his wife is in hospital? Maybe his mum died? Maybe her email went into his spam folder and he hasn't seen it, or it did go to his inbox but so did 50 other ones that day and it's been overlooked? Just send another one.

Othersvoices · 08/05/2020 23:38

Why has my year 10s teacher not replied to an email she sent him a week ago?

Why don't you phone the school and find out? 🙄
He/She may not be well.
He/She may have a family member who is not well.
He/She may have had a ton of e-mails and this one slipped through the net.

awaywiththecircus · 08/05/2020 23:41

She’s done that already but I’ll get her to send another then. Gives me great hope especially as she’s not had any feedback on any of her work from any other teacher either.

andadietcoke · 08/05/2020 23:44

A school local to me has published their plans for managing social distancing and what their understanding of reopening will look like (the head has some insight due to his professional activities outside the school). This was sent to staff on Tuesday and another version to parents today. Is this not commonplace?

awaywiththecircus · 08/05/2020 23:46

And why the hell should she or we be chasing her teachers to do their job?

Othersvoices · 08/05/2020 23:48

She’s done that already but I’ll get her to send another then. Gives me great hope especially as she’s not had any feedback on any of her work from any other teacher either.

She's phoned the school?
Really? Did she? And they said nothing? 🙄
YOU phone and explain that your DD is not receiving any kind of communication. Is there a problem? Is the teacher in question able to answer currently (see reasons on previous post why this might not be possible).

awaywiththecircus · 08/05/2020 23:49

She’s not phoned school she sent 3 emails.

Powergower · 08/05/2020 23:50

My year 10 and 12 only receive emails with work for the week on a Monday. No marking and no follow up. Kids need an education and the education sector need to find a way through this, as do we all. I'm sick of the insinuation that parents want to get rid of their kids. If teachers were offering my kids more than Monday emails I wouldn't be so worried. The only kids I know who are still being actively educated are those in private schooling. I'm seriously worried for my kids future and pending exams next year. You just cannot expect a year 10 student to teach himself 9 gcse subjects. I'm doing all I can educating him whilst still working 12-14 hours a day meeting my own work targets.

I can't even begin to help educate my year 12 a level work. Some teachers on social media were very ungratious when this began with all the 'enjoy home schooling your kids' posts.

Othersvoices · 08/05/2020 23:51

And why the hell should she or we be chasing her teachers to do their job?

Yeh, they're obviously all twats.
No other reason possible.
They're probably too busy sunbathing in their gardens to be arsed.
Nobody is ill, nobody died, nobody's e-'ails have been unintentionally missed. They're just twats.
Is that what you want to hear?

Othersvoices · 08/05/2020 23:52

She’s not phoned school she sent 3 emails.

Ahh, 3 e-mails now... I see.
And you've phoned the school too I suppose to find out...(fuck it...just read the posts below)

EachDubh · 08/05/2020 23:57

Keep polishing those halos guys.
It must be hard to have to keep having to tell us useless teachers how shit we are. To watch us get paid to do a job anyone can do.
The fact you know sweet f. a. about the job aart from what you mate down the road, or your sister or the dog told you is irrelevant because, well, you know, your so great and know everything
There is no point entering a debate or conversing with you because you have one goal, full school opening so your kids go back. You haven't stopped to think of the damage you drivel does. Teacher retention is really poor, we train them, put them in the classrooms and 50% leave within 5 years, burnt out. Now added to the daily issues we have people spouting this rubbish. The goodwill will go. Your kids will lose all those free clubs they enjoy, you will have to start booking appointments weeks in advance to speak to a teacher, no more quick catch ups. Trips and residentials will be a thing of the past, because all of these need freebies and goodwill from education staff. Unpaid hours, flexibility of working, providing equipment. Not just because a virus has created a crisis but every day.
But you keep polishing those halos, keep telling us how bad we are as a profession, how your profesion is somehow superior 🤔🙄 how we haven't stepped up. But keep your fingers crossed that peiple in education keep providing the freebies for just now. Working upaid through their holidays, working in the hub as a frebie because they are still doing their work as well. If that stops the hubs can't function.
