Covid-19: British death toll now highest in Europe
via The Irish Times
www.irishtimes.com/news/world/uk/covid-19-british-death-toll-now-highest-in-europe-1.4245336

This has made me so sad and angry. Why are we the worst? Why did we not learn from other countries and why do so many people (on here at least) think that we can get back to relative normal now?

British death toll highest in Europe

I don't doubt there are many more deaths to be added to the final totals in Italy btw. The same as all the ones in other countries still to be added.

Exactly. There’s no point comparing.
The reporting isn’t finalised, and it’s all being done differently

@ rebel i cant find that online so would appreciate a link for that information so i can check the source.

This article was published 5 days ago;

"France to investigate how many Covid-19 patients are dying at home."

"One of the unknowns about Covid-19 mortality in France is the number of people dying at home. With studies showing up to a third of deaths are not being reported, France’s government said Wednesday it would provide its own estimate in June."

"Every day from the beginning of the Covid-19 epidemic in March, French health officials have posted data showing the number of hospitalisations, discharges and deaths due to the disease caused by the new coronavirus."

"Following weeks of rumblings about the toll the disease was taking in care homes for the elderly, officials began reporting relevant figures in mid April."

"The French government now says health services will provide an estimate of how many people have died from Covid-19 at home in June."

I believe that is for deaths at home which has also been left of the uk figs as well up recently at least and i am dont think they are included now.. I am sure there are more to be added all round but the french figures has been very accurate up to now ( after a lag of adding in care homes)

Ireland (which includes care home deaths, and all deaths where Covid was present in its figures) may be less dense than England, but it's not less dense than Northern Ireland and figures are nearly double in NI than the republic

Population density in the Republic of Ireland is about half that of NI. So if population density is a factor - which it must be - then the twice larger death rates in NI correspond to this exactly.

That said, population density is only one of many factors, some of which we probably don't understand at the moment. We're still learning about the Spanish flu over a century on, so we won't know the true story of this pandemic for many years.

Humphries my understanding is that all deaths with positive Covid test are now included in the daily toll.

So nothing hidden.

There are of course deaths which are not recorded as Covid and these do need to be taken into account. This will be the same in all countries.

These are published weekly by ONS for England. Not sure how up to date they are for other countries.

I am really not sure why people have so much mistrust of Dr's, Coroners, etc.

Report
Rebelwithallthecause · 05/05/2020 21:01

Yes deaths are home are included in U.K. figures

Report
Humphriescushion · 05/05/2020 21:01

Those are also only extrapolated figures and are not facts. The figures for france so far have been very accurate as per the insee ( frances ons) . Also if france has 9000 deaths in care so far and the uk is only saying around 4000 it appears that the uk maybe undercounting ( only those tested) However once again i hate the comparing and wish it would stop.

Hadenoughfornow · 05/05/2020 21:02

Should say UK drs, Coroners, etc.

Yes we have a shit government but then we are not alone in that.

Report
Humphriescushion · 05/05/2020 21:03

I really dont think they have been unless they were tested. This was only done recently. I believe they possibly are now but it is not clear. There were many deaths at home with covid on the death certificate that were not counted.

Selmaselma · 05/05/2020 21:04

There are discrepancies between the UK Covid reporting of 29k and the Office for National Statistics numbers that 41k more people than normal died since mid March.

Humphries but you are the one comparing? Hmm

I know I have said on this post that we really won't know excess deaths until the pandemic is over.

What does bug me is when people come on and preach about their country, whilst saying mines is shit.

We have a shit government but we don't have shit professionals.

Report
KenDodd · 05/05/2020 21:05

Well it's not Boris's fault, or the Tories, or their voters.
It's Corbyn's fault, and the EU, and immigrants.

Report
Humphriescushion · 05/05/2020 21:05

I know that they are included now if they have been tested. I believe that this is now being done and is accurate, however this is very recent and swathes were missed before this ( both in care homes and in homes ) because they did not have test.

Report
Humphriescushion · 05/05/2020 21:07

I am comparing because of the inference that other countries are missing loads and therefore the uk must be less. I am sick of it. The goverment has been doing this constantly

Report
Hadenoughfornow · 05/05/2020 21:07

Ken Corbyn does need to take some of the blame.

If he wasn't so shit and we had had a proper opposition we might not have this shit government Angry

Report
Hadenoughfornow · 05/05/2020 21:08

other countries are missing data. And the UK is too.

Hence a few (including me) mentioning excess deaths.

Report
Humphriescushion · 05/05/2020 21:08

I dont think the professionals are shit and i dont think france is better! I now think the gov is shit unfortunately and really did not want to!

Report
Hadenoughfornow · 05/05/2020 21:10

And we don't yet know. That's the whole point. We are only at beginning of pandemic.

UK will be either top or close to the top. But op said we were worst in Europe. That is not known at this time.

Report
Selmaselma · 05/05/2020 21:13

The Financial Times seems to think that it is known, Hadenoughfornow.

Report
Xenia · 05/05/2020 21:13

Selma, I prefer excess deaths too although the problem with those are some will be extra non covid 19 deaths due to people not calling or not being able to get an ambulance but also many dying of covid 19 but that is not on the death cert as doctors did not know or have no way of knowing.

Report
KenDodd · 05/05/2020 21:15

I now think the gov is shit

I believe the Gov have record approval ratings, voters think Boris is doing a fantastic job and everybody loves him (not even joking).
