Auld - We received our fabric masks. They are a joke. Mine are huge and fall off my face. They don't seem to have been made for human faces.

Côte
Wonderful. I have booked a slot to collect mine on Tues evening. Won't hold my breath, then. What with juggling work, housekeeping and the 2 DC, I haven't got time to whip out Grandma's sewing machine, which has been gathering dust since I brought it back from Scotland last summer, and run up masks.

NC here, was a back to front 18th c bod before. I've run up a couple of masks at home on my machine. I'm completely crap at sewing not sexing as I first typed, I'm quite good at that but I followed the Raising Nobles mask tutorial on Youtube and they turned out half decent.

The masks given out by our mairies need to be steam ironed first, to shrink the elastic. They still look like torchons though.

Ive discovered.that Paris is also giving out 2 washables masks per person from the 11th but you need to sign up on the website from the 11th....

I found a tutorial on youtube for how to make a no sew mask in a minute using some material and 2 elastic bands. Wasnt bad actually- will use if necessary but whilst I can I ll continue not wearing masks. I don't need to use piblic transport so its only when going into shops where its obligatory.

Having said that, the decathlon website doesn't make it clear - they say everyone but does that include under 11s? We need to buy my 6 year old a bike....

Also the sports club for our DC will be extensing lessons past end of June to make up for missed classes. They dont seem to want to have to refund!!! Lol

think the obligatory mask thing is just silly. Who knows how many times 1 mask has been worn? Or even how long? So it becomes just a show rather than an actual barrier.

This is my feeling too. I bought 4 non reusable chirugical masks for 4€ at the Pharmacie on Wednesday, and at that price I won't be throwing them away after one use. Apparently the price increase from January is 1187% which is just ridiculous.

Judging by emails over the last couple of days, I get the impression that most shops that have not been open during the confinement will require you to wear a mask from next week. I've noticed over the last week in my local supermarket that I'm in a minority not wearing a mask, even though it's not obligatory.

It looks like I will replace carrying the attestation in my bag with always having a mask instead.

95% of people I see in Paris are wearing masks. Frustrating as I looked into it back in January but decided a) best to leave the stock to professionals and b) all the recommendations were not to wear them. I will not now be spending a fortune on them!

I ll get some washable ones and wear them only when its obligatory.

I ll also wait for the prices to drop as the surplus flood the market. Supermarkets ìn Paris are currently heaving with flour Grin

@Roseau18 we’re preparing for possible distance learning from September, fingers crossed it doesn’t happen....

Concerning masks, there is a tutorial on the internet showing how to make a mask with some fabric (eg. a bandana) and a couple of elastics ! I wouldn’t want to wear such a mask for very long but for just popping into a shop it saves getting a sewing machine out Grin

Personally I think the masks are probably pointless, but people need to feel like they are doing something to mitigate the risk of going out so probably everyone will be wearing them and there will be social blame for not wearing one (not a good situation for people with SN, or other reasons for not being able to wear a mask). I can't imagine children tolerating them for long, especially not in the heat.

I've been getting information from various sports clubs the DC do. For now they are all doing trials with adults only, no children in classes. The dance class will be holding classes outdoors, the riding club will be offering only private lessons. They are all hopeful that things will be better by July. Fingers crossed.

I think that there is enough evidence to show that if everyone wears a mask then infection rates will dramatically reduce.

My concern is more about crime/terrorism. If it becomes normal to cover one's face in public then how will malfaiteurs be identified?

@ChateauMargaux I've seen a huge increase in GE and VD registered cars in the Carrefour in Segny so maybe they're not checking at the Douane? I can't imagine they'll stop you taking the kids across to school.

I made some masks myself for us and we wear them at the supermarket. I'm going to make some more once I can get my hands on more tissu and élastique. It's sold out everywhere!!

@LongPauseSally I think the Swiss are more willing to cross the border because the Swiss won't check on the way back in and the French don't check them on the way out. Maybe I am being cynical but ot feels like we are blocked out but the Swiss don't feel the same restrictions. Maybe I am just being too fearful of the consequences of breaking the rules because officially, the borders are closed though we have been given attestation for school so I think for that it will be fine. I am missing my friends who live on the other side and missing the lake!!

Hi everyone,

I started a thread after reading this thread and, as a French national living in England, loving reading Brits talking about schools and children in France.

If you’re interested in sharing your views on how parenting and raising children differs in France and in the U.K., I’d love to hear your opinion here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/multicultural_families/3903488-British-mums-in-France-tell-me-about-parenting-and-raising-children-in-France

I’d love to know what British mums think about the French way, French schools, what they prefer in France, in the U.K., etc.

Primary teacher in the Rhône - we are back on Monday with a group of 15, simultaneously teaching the rest of the class remotely. Hmmm.
Our horse riding groups are all back on, albeit limited to 5 per group. Gloves will be compulsory however but not masks.

Meanwhile my ds and ds, both in Lycée have given up the will to live. Especially my son in Terminale whose life is completely unpredictable now.

Chateau over here in Alsace the French would not let Swiss people cross for shopping and all border crossings are either blocked or manned. Almost all our friends are in Switzerland and they can't come over to see us.

Some people living here but with DC in Swiss schools had asked the Swiss authorities if they can cross, and were told that a)no they can't, b) only if their children are in vulnerable category, c) sure, just bring a school certificate. By the same authority! Looks like they have now discussed it and children can indeed go to school.

Good news that riding classes have started again. I've been watching for news from the FFe but they have been remarkably quiet.

I agree masks could work (if thick enough and used properly) but you need to get hold of them. And i resent all the suggestions from the government that we make our own. I have nothing to make them with and no skill. I have tried the one minute no sew mask using a strappy top and elastic bands. Okish but not to wear more than 20 minutes. I will wear a mask when I can get one for a reasonable price.
