‘Is Boris off his head’ asks Europe

Zandathepanda · 04/05/2020 16:54

From the BBC news website:
^Today, Europe is hosting a virtual conference for world leaders and philanthropists in an effort to raise €7.5bn (£6.6bn; $8.3bn) to drive vaccine research.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is co-hosting the event, is expected to ask countries to pull together.^

So Boris is asking European countries to pull together. Whilst negotiating Brexit. Or not. Oh the irony.

Yes, and the Tories will win that one too. It must be painful being a Labour supporter these days

Actually - it's quite good fun watching PMQs at the moment and seeing the 'supply' PM squirming.

U.K. isn't in Europe any more, did you miss the vote.

No, really, leave voters absolutely understand everything and always know what they're talking about. Hmm

UK might rue the day of leaving the EU. But who knows?

The exit on top of everything else. But UK is so superior, and knows everything I suppose.

So black and white on here. I also assume I am “twat face” .
I’m not a fan of Boris the man. His record with women and his children is poor to say the least. However I quite fancy large blond blokes with pale eyebrows so I’d probably let him buy me a drink. I despise the way he banged in about Brexit and then bottled the election when Cameron went, leaving it to May. Either weak or conniving.

What’s wrong with him heading any conference, with anyone to find a vaccine?

The PM holds an international conference urging all countries to work together to find a vaccine for a virus thats caused a global pandemic

Same PM negotiates the UK leaving the EU as voted for by the public

It’s quite simple it’s a different project

I have many European friends (mostly in Germany) there has been lots of grumbling about financially supporting other countries in recent years particularly Italy and before Greece. I’m not sure EU solidarity within Central Europe will be quite as strong in the next few years

You talk about the UK and Europe, Europe pretty much abandoned Italy recently and had to apologise.

They are good when world isn't in crisis but it seems Europe once chips are down it's everyone for theirselves.

We left the EU, we are still in Europe!
Weird!

I an sure the European leaders will love having 'Mr We can have our Cake and Eat it' round the same table urging them to pull together.

It probably has not occurred to them that a vaccine is needed? Another stroke of pure genius from Johnson.

Given his uncanny ability to insult everyone let's hope he doesn't mutter a short 'aside' in that aristocratic voice of his about 'not sharing it with foreigners if we get one first...…...

There are a number of vaccine projects because there was funding available for one against SARS at the time. Funding was then pulled when SARS didn't turn out to be the major problem at first thought. So all the work got put in the freezer, and can now be modified for SARS-CoV-2

This Gvmnt are an appalling bunch of self-serving middle-managers, who don't have the wit between them to successfully run a bath.

Probably worth pointing out there was not supposed to be an EU at this point because of the domino effect in which 27 member states would follow Britain's lead into economic oblivion...

I was impressed by the way they got over 100,000 tests on the exact day they were supposed to hit the target. Sir Humphrey would have been proud.

I really hope they have got the testing sorted out with track and trace. If you get a message saying you have come into contact with someone who as a confirmed case of Covid-19 and you need to self isolate, then I really hope they get a test to that person quickly so you can confirm whether or not you have the infection.

Let's see what happens

Go on then, tell us what the real numbers being tested are.

Remembering of course that time when you swore blind that there was no way the Conservatives would get 43% of the vote ... exactly 4 days before they did Wink

Lots of Gvmnt apologists out on SM recently. Tell me what they've achieved? What are we to be supportive for?

You can be rude to me if you like but there is a very large body of experts who have been shocked at this govmnts approach. I am a scientist yes. I recognised this virus for what it is in middle of January. I have been taking simple steps since then to avoid infection for myself and my family. I sadly don't have the ear of the govmnt but other virologists & epidemiologists did, but seemingly to no availit for too long. No-one can stop a pandemic in its tracks but preparation, readiness with a plan, and a strong early response are essential to minimise both fatalities and economic impact. Where was ours?

The government apologists treat politics and life like a football match. You support your team no matter what, always hate the opposition. Pretending everything is fine also helps. Think Comical Ali during the Iraq war. Government incompetence during a pandemic? Who cares we won the election!

I am baffled by some of the views on here, including the OP's.

Why is it hard to understand that leaving the EU was very little or nothing to do with not wanting to co-operate with other countries?

Not wanting to abandon sovereignty and abide by a whole set of rules and ever closer integration with the EU does not exclude a desire to co-operate on activities which are clearly for the common good.

Brexit does not equate to isolationist.Rather it can be about taking a much broader world view.

Why would EU countries think Boris is off his head when he can offer the considerable scientific resources of the UK to the fight against corona virus? The UK is at the forefront of vaccine research and at least for the moment is one of the larger world economies. They'd be off their heads to reject co-operation with the UK, not the other way round.

And FYI, I voted remain.

DoubleTweenQueen ""a very large body of experts who have been shocked at this govmnts approach" and I bet you have links to their youtube channels don't you.

Did you know that "a very large body of experts" is shocked that people think 9/11 was terrorism and that there were planes involved?

In the real world of course there will be scientists who disagree as science works like that, but they tend not to be shocked when others come to difference conclusions. Especially when the data is limited.

I recognised this virus for what it is in middle of January Where were you getting your data back then? Tarot cards?

Some remainers have turned this into a bit of an obsession now. I have no issue with those who having considered the matter think it was a bad choice. (in the long term they may even turn out to be right) Just those who seem to be unable to think of anything else.

"2 sugars please"

"You've got some nerve! You know that sugar comes from another country right?"

I don't know what the future will bring, but I was an adult when the UK entered the EU and back then it was just a common market not a federal government. I find it hard to believe that we're unable to function without them.
