Do we think ANY foreign holidays will happen this summer?

Do we think 'that's it' for foreign holidays this year?

I do look at the situation and think, well there's no way resorts /hotels ect can open, or if they do, everything will be massively restricted

And then I think, but surely so many places will go bust, surely they will do everything they can to reopen as 'normally' as possible?

We have a TUI all inclusive booked for Crete mid August. Crete and Greece in general, comparitively unaffected by Corona.

Assume they will want to keep it that way, so even if the holiday happens, will social distancing make it feel very un-holiday like. Or is August a long time away?

If I leave it late to postpone til next year, well everyone will have had the same idea I think.

Stick, or twist?!

We normally have an xmas get away for a few nights in a European city. Initially it seemed possible but now we won't be booking. We are optimistically hoping a uk break might be an option in the latter half of this year but who knows.

I have a bit of a fear of being in a country where I dont speak the language and needing something IV - purely from not being able to be certain what I'm being administered. This is normally a back of the mind concern but would be far more relevant in the current crisis.

Beamur · 03/05/2020 14:00

Article about this on the BBC website. Some of the measures being discussed sound pretty grim. Plexiglass between sun loungers, half capacity hotels to ensure distancing, empty seats on planes, wearing masks all the time. Prices will go up hugely too. Airlines won't run at a loss so no cheap flights.
Staycation for me.

I had a week in Lombardy booked for the start of September & I’ve cancelled. I’m just glad the hotel was pay-on-arrival, I can live with losing the cost of the flights if I have to.

Even if I could still theoretically get there, I’d far rather go next year instead now. I am hoping it will be possible to have a city break somewhere in the UK by then though.

AJPTaylor · 03/05/2020 14:16

I've cancelled all my pre bookings on Booking.com til the end of year, just in case I forget nearer the time! But I can't see any point on Booking anything now. I would never travel abroad without health insurance and if policies don't cover new bookings and obvs the reciprical European healthcare thing is ending, that's it for the time being.

CountFosco · 03/05/2020 14:51

If we get to travel to see any of our family in this country this year I'll be happy. If we get abroad next year for Easter I'll be delighted but am not expecting it.

Parker231 · 03/05/2020 14:54

Can’t see any country wanting visiting from the U.K., country with one of the highest number of deaths.

MinesaPinot · 03/05/2020 15:30

We're due to go to Greece at the end of August but have resigned ourselves to the fact that we won't be going. We've already paid the whole amount so we are holding on to see what the procedure will be for getting a refund. We've rebooked for next August so am looking forward to that for now.

terrigrey · 03/05/2020 16:25

I doubt the rest of the world wants British tourists, my overseas friends are reporting that their countries press are not impressed with the British gov response to C-vid and one of the highest death/infection rates in the world.

As we have left Europe, they will be especially not interesting in hosting us.

UK holidays are going to be crazy expensive, although I guess people don't have to stick to school holidays, so hiring a cottage will still be ok. The locals won't be impressed with the tourists turning up, so don't expect a warm welcome.

I've planted up my garden so I have something nice to look at!

Do we think ANY foreign holidays will happen this summer?
MrsWhites · 03/05/2020 16:37

I’m personally still hoping to go on holiday to the USA later in the year.

So many countries like Greece are going to have to make a very difficult decision between risking the virus coming in from tourists or plunging their country into poverty! I wouldn’t like to be the person making those decisions!

missyB1 · 03/05/2020 16:39

No chance! Hopefully summer 2021 but who knows what will have happened in terms of the economy/ Airlines/ prices etc by then. I think It will be years before travel returns to pre Covid levels - if it ever does. I’m sad about our Greek holiday that we should have been going on in July Sad

TimeWastingButFun · 03/05/2020 16:55

I was wondering about this. Kids are gutted about missing their holidays this year. I was thinking about booking now for September but it’s probably too risky :-(

IcedPurple · 03/05/2020 17:00

Already some countries, Cyprus, for example have said when they reopen to tourism it won't include people from the UK. Rightly so. They need to protect themselves by keeping us out.

So ''ToffeeYoghurt'' is better informed than the deputy PM of Cyprus?

*Cyprus’s deputy prime minister has said British holidaymakers will be “welcomed with open arms” when travel restrictions lift.

Savvas Perdios moved to reassure Britain that it forms part of the country’s post-lockdown plans after failing to mention the UK in a list of the first countries they will be allowed back in.*

tillytoodles1 · 03/05/2020 17:04

If flights become really expensive then the holiday destinations will still be struggling if no-one can afford to go there.

M0recakeplease · 03/05/2020 17:13

We are due to be camping in France late summer - accommodation is fully self contained and in a rural area. It could work but I doubt very much they’ll have us 🙁

timeforawine · 03/05/2020 17:19

I have holidays in August and November booked, not cancelling either, will just see what happens.
Though November is to New Zealand/Fiji and i can't see them letting us in so may need to request a voucher for our deposit amount rather than pay the full balance

VenusTiger · 03/05/2020 17:41

@M0recakeplease same here - France's numbers are similar to ours - we're over the peak here and it's early May - it could be a different ball game come mid-August so I don't see how they could not welcome us.

If you can, look at a graph showing population density and deaths per million - we are quite low down on the graph - Belgium and Spain are at the top end.

RunningNinja79 · 03/05/2020 17:44

Another one here due to go to France. We are driving down and getting the Eurostar the end of August. I'm not expecting to go. Will be nice if we can, but I wont be surprised if we can't. I'm not going if they expect us to quarantine for 2 weeks as then I'd just be making the best of a holiday rather than having a nice time. Rather stay here and have days out etc.

BackInTime · 03/05/2020 17:48

The resumption of travel risks a big resurgence in the virus, remember it was travel over half term that brought many cases here and spread it all over Europe. While I will really be sad to miss my holiday this year, we need to prioritise what is most important like our NHS and getting back to work and school. If holidays risk a further lockdown impacting the economy and my DCs education then I am not sure it is worth it.

ToffeeYoghurt · 03/05/2020 17:50

IcedPurple As the article says he left us off the original list. Things have clearly changed since I saw it. Note he says when they reopen. Who knows when that will be.

I suspect some poorer countries, those that are heavily reliant on tourist income, might feel pressured into accepting tourists from dangerous places before it's safe to do so. So perhaps Brits might be allowed in to some places to infect people there. Who knows.

We need to bear in mind being allowed entry and having a proper holiday experience are different things. There could be quarantines - local or national, local closures or restrictions with shops, cafes, bars, restaurants. Think too of the stay away from Cornwall and similar threads on here. Their government may let us in but will all the locals be thrilled to see people from one of the worse affected countries in the world? I wouldn't. How welcoming will they really be.

We shall see what happens. I'd certainly make sure I had comprehensive travel insurance that covers pandemic cancellations before booking a holiday anywhere just yet.

AgeLikeWine · 03/05/2020 17:51

It’s very, very unlikely that non-essential international leisure travel to or from countries which have been hit very hard, such as the U.K., Spain, France, Italy, USA etc etc will be possible until the autumn at the earliest.

Non-essential between countries which have not been hit so hard, eg Germany, Greece, Australia, NZ is more likely to be possible.

IcedPurple · 03/05/2020 18:00

IcedPurple As the article says he left us off the original list. Things have clearly changed since I saw it. Note he says when they reopen. Who knows when that will be.

That's another question, distinct from your rush to paint Brits as unwanted in Cyprus, when the minister in fact made of point of saying how welcome they were.

So perhaps Brits might be allowed in to some places to infect people there. Who knows.

Yes, who knew that this was a disease which only affected Brits.

pfrench · 03/05/2020 18:07

I was thinking about booking now for September but it’s probably too risky :-(

This is what will happen. If it's suddenly OK to travel internationally again in September, loads of kids will be taken out of school to go on holiday.

Grufallosfriends · 03/05/2020 18:13

@ToffeeYoghurt makes a good point. Our high cases/deaths aren't going to make countries open their borders to us easily.

Rightly so! And if they did let us in, they'd rightly require us to quarantine there for 2 weeks!

ToffeeYoghurt · 03/05/2020 18:15

Who says it only affects Brits?
Ironically one big reason we're in such a bad way is because our government took the opposite view several months ago. Their policy seemed to be based on the ridiculous notion that it didn't affect Brits, that we were somehow special. We're not. Consequently we now have one of the highest number of cases (and deaths) in the world.

Like I said it's unfortunate that some countries, heavily reliant on tourist income might feel under pressure to accept people too soon from more infected countries. It's a terrible shame if any do feel compelled out of desperation to put themselves at such risk. Speaking only for myself if I were Cypriot I wouldn't welcome one of us in. Whether my government did or not. Not until we've got our infection rate under control.
