Do we think ANY foreign holidays will happen this summer?

Do we think 'that's it' for foreign holidays this year?

I do look at the situation and think, well there's no way resorts /hotels ect can open, or if they do, everything will be massively restricted

And then I think, but surely so many places will go bust, surely they will do everything they can to reopen as 'normally' as possible?

We have a TUI all inclusive booked for Crete mid August. Crete and Greece in general, comparitively unaffected by Corona.

Assume they will want to keep it that way, so even if the holiday happens, will social distancing make it feel very un-holiday like. Or is August a long time away?

If I leave it late to postpone til next year, well everyone will have had the same idea I think.

Stick, or twist?!

My main concern is travel insurance, as a lot of policies don’t cover corona. Would you risk it?

Musicaltheatremum · 03/05/2020 13:19

Many countries want people to quarantine for 2 weeks after they arrive so no point in going.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 03/05/2020 13:19

I don't think they will take place no. My sister was booked to go to Boston in October - holiday company have already cancelled it. Why would they do that now if there was any chance it could go ahead?

ToffeeYoghurt · 03/05/2020 13:21

The countries comparatively unaffected by Covid won't want to allow entry to someone from one of the worse infected countries in the world. Already some countries, Cyprus, for example have said when they reopen to tourism it won't include people from the UK. Rightly so. They need to protect themselves by keeping us out.

Heylottie33 · 03/05/2020 13:21

I have insurance, taken at point of booking, but you are right, a long quarantine on return makes it a no go.
I think I just want something to look forward to

No. I can't see how normal holidays will exist at all this year. Different countries will have different rules on border and quarantine. Then there is the social distancing in regards to sightseeing, hotel or beach and food and drink. How would airports run or social distancing in aircraft?

It wouldn't be the normal holiday experience.

ChasingRainbows19 · 03/05/2020 13:24

@ToffeeYoghurt makes a good point. Our high cases/deaths aren't going to make countries open their borders to us easily.

leafygarden · 03/05/2020 13:25

No

Oly4 · 03/05/2020 13:26

I think nobody has any idea yet! Greek tourism minister was interviewed this week and was very positive

Honeybee85 · 03/05/2020 13:30

Nobody knows yet... it's too early.
There is 1 thing for sure: Greece really needs the money from the tourists and I bet they'll open the border again as soon as other countries do because they don't want to miss out on the money that the tourists normally bring every year during summer.

Vagndidit · 03/05/2020 13:36

Nope. I've already given up hope on our yearly trip home to the US to visit my elderly parents in August.
Am totally gutted as we haven't seen them since August 2019 and probably won't be able to until Easter next year at the earliest :(

Glittertwins · 03/05/2020 13:39

We booked our holiday last year, well before any of this broke. We've only had to pay a nominal deposit but I can't see it happening.

I'm also not sure if I will even have enough holiday to actually take since my company is requiring us to have taken nearly half our allowance by the end of June.

AlexaShutUp · 03/05/2020 13:42

No, I really don't think people will be able to travel on holidays abroad this summer. Sorry.

I also think a lot of tourism-related businesses will go bust as a result of this crisis, so it's hard to say what holidays will look like in the longer term. I guess the sector will eventually bounce back, but who knows.

Baseline2815 · 03/05/2020 13:43

I think that any country in a good enough position with the virus this summer will require a quarantine for visitors. Reinfection would cost more than lost tourism income, as another shutdown would affect every sector. That means travellers might have a quarantine on arrival at their destination and another on their return. So... absolutely essential journeys only. Then again... their may be an effective treatment or some advances and readily available testing by August. Wouldn't bet on it, though.

Baseline2815 · 03/05/2020 13:45

And that's before you factor in which airlines will still be in business by August.

SailingAwayIntoSunrise · 03/05/2020 13:45

Absolutely not.

I don't think many people (on MN) understand this pandemic malarkey 🤦

cologne4711 · 03/05/2020 13:47

A German friend of mine has a holiday booked in Denmark -- to stay in a holiday cottage. She hopes they can still go, they'll be in a cottage, that part of Denmark isn't densely populated and it's immaterial whether she shops in a German supermarket or a Danish one. She has a point. But of course all she needs to do is drive for a couple of hours. It won't work if either or both countries have a quarantine period though.

It might be that trips are possible travelling by car/ferry/Eurostar. But I think air travel is going to be very unpleasant and difficult. And any quarantine requirement will make anything other than essential travel a non-starter.

pfrench · 03/05/2020 13:51

No. We won't be allowed in due to the management of it in the UK.

Aus/NZ might have a travel zone among themselves, same for some countries in Europe, but we're stuffed.

I have a house in Cornwall, I'm assuming we won't be going there this summer even.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 03/05/2020 13:51

Apart from.anything else, so many airlines are in danger of going broke I think the cost of holidays/air travel will sky rocket.

GreyGardens88 · 03/05/2020 13:53

Yeah I reckon so - in a few months

minmooch · 03/05/2020 13:53

I'm supposed to be walking Kilimanjaro in October. At the moment there are no flights to or from Tanzania. FCO saying that visitors to country will need to quarantine in government centres. FCO are warning that these centres have inadequate facilities and pose health risks.

That alone says I won't be going. Let alone whether there will be any flights. Do I want to sit on a plane for those hours with others? Would I want to be ill there? Would people want visitors from the UK? Would the actual trip go ahead (social distancing/limited people gathering).

Let alone being able to train for it or the need to quarantine on return. I haven't got the holiday time or finances for quarantining both ends of the trip.

I seem to be the only one in my group openly questioning the chances

Quite frankly I want to postpone it to next year but it's a charity challenge so not my call. I don't want to go on it this year.

SmudgeButt · 03/05/2020 13:53

I may need to fly to Canada later this year (elderly parent) and hope there will be an airline. And that I don't have to wear a mask for potentially 12 hours.

But I won't be booking anything until there's a reasonable expectation of actually going. If I book now (assuming I could) my current travel insurance wouldn't cover a cancellation due to the virus.

IGottaGetOuttaThisPlace · 03/05/2020 13:54

No and if they did things like an all inclusive buffet and kids clubs full of randoms would be a total no no.

Wouldn't be very holiday like.

Bearbehind · 03/05/2020 13:55

I think June / July is out of the question but after that things will have to be starting to get back to ‘normal’

Too many businesses will simply be unable to survive if they don’t

Things will definitely change but I do think there will be some level of travel and holidays from August onwards

Unravellingslowly · 03/05/2020 13:59

No.
