I can't see any reason why I wouldn't. Has anyone got any concerns about it?

As the contract was awarded to a mate of Dominic Cummmngs (£250 million), with no competition, no I won't.

Wakemeuuuup · 01/05/2020 22:09

As above, Dominic Cummings being involved makes me very uneasy about it

Violetparis · 01/05/2020 22:13

Yes I will.

excitedmumtobe87 · 01/05/2020 22:16

No. Not with Cummings and Ben and Marc Warner involved.

Which is a shame because run by responsible people, it would be an excellent idea.

midgebabe · 01/05/2020 22:17

I would not see how Google's decentralised version was any more respectful of privacy than a centralised version. Google are quite capable of getting the data they want even if it is decentralised

The centralised version has the advantage that localised hot spots can be detected quickly which could enable problem areas , such as a workplace with poor staff protection , to be detected

What matters to me is how much visibility they give to human rights organisations to monitor the code and data

Emcont · 01/05/2020 22:19

Nope! We're already tracked enough.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 01/05/2020 22:21

I've posted on another thread about this.

Out of interest and genuine question, what information do you think the govt will get from this and use against individuals, that will negatively impact you? Aside from the ethics of it I mean.

Oly4 · 01/05/2020 22:23

Yes - because I care about ending this pandemic! And contact tracing is a good way to do it.
Amazed people would be so selfish as to not to. It’s a key way of helping control this virus

Emcont · 01/05/2020 22:24

In the small print (as with most apps) it will say you have to give permission for microphone, access to files etc.

SingingTunelessly · 01/05/2020 22:25

Yes

Nat6999 · 01/05/2020 22:27

This will only work for smartphones, what about the people who don't have a smartphone? Especially older people.

kevintheorangecarrot · 01/05/2020 22:29

Absolutely would

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 01/05/2020 22:32

This will only work for smartphones, what about the people who don't have a smartphone?

It's in the national interest for you to buy a smartphone. Do you actually want old ladies to die?

LilacTree1 · 01/05/2020 22:33

Nat - they’re hiring contact tracers

TheGoatIsHere · 01/05/2020 22:33

The app won't be "tracking your every move" - its not GPS based. Everyone one will get a unique ID. As you go about your daily life it will use Bluetooth to detect other app users nearby and log an interaction if you are close by. So it will build up a record of the IDs of interaction over time. If someone later tests positive for Covid they check the database for other IDs and are able to send a notification to those users. The central database does not need to link an ID to a name - so no personal information should be exposed.

TheGoatIsHere · 01/05/2020 22:36

Some countries are not using the centralised approach to do the contact matching, but will be using the Apple/Google based solution which is decentralised

Emcont · 01/05/2020 22:37

Of course your ID will be linked to a name somewhere. Or your phone number. Or your IP address. Or your IMEI. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but you're naive if you believe it will collect no personal data Hmm

BrooHaHa · 01/05/2020 22:39

Might be a trade off for easing lockdown?

So we have to trade our privacy for our freedom? And basically volunteer to carry an electronic tag with us? As law abiding citizens who have done nothing wrong?

LilacTree1 · 01/05/2020 22:41

Broo that is what is so many posters are agreeing to, yes.

BroomstickOfLove · 01/05/2020 22:41

I suspect that most people don't actually have smartphones with long enough battery life to have the app on whenever they are outside the house, so I'd be pretty wary of making it the main part if the contact tracing strategy.

Emcont · 01/05/2020 22:41

Exactly @BrooHaHa!

LilacTree1 · 01/05/2020 22:42

And you’re killing people if you won’t buy a smartphone!!

Emcont · 01/05/2020 22:43

Some apps aren't 'off' when they're supposed to be 'off'. Facebook and Instagram are two that are known to lurk despite being 'asleep'.

PrivacyOne · 01/05/2020 22:48

It looks pretty certain that it will be trialled where I live very soon. The company is called NHSX. I’m uneasy about it, tbh.

LilacTree1 · 01/05/2020 22:55

Oh, I saw something about NHSX
