I noticed this, particularly at the beginning when the shelves were empty apart from one or two bottles/whatever of a really expensive brand which I bought because I needed the stuff.

NaturalBornWoman · 01/05/2020 07:12

Weekly shop is much more expensive but overall I’m not sure we’re spending much more as I’m not popping into M&S on my way home from work, going out for dinner, buying lunch etc. and normally the supermarket shop wouldn’t include booze.

I’m shocked that someone has openly admitted to taking up a delivery and a click and collect slot per week for a family of 4. I’ve been contacted by 3 different supermarkets but surely you just choose one and let other people have a chance?

MrsExpo · 01/05/2020 07:14

Yes. Just the two of us and I normally spend about £70 a week (including a couple of bottles of wine!). Yesterday, my Morrison's bill was nearly £120.00 for just about the same amount of stuff. Everything is more expensive and there are no special offers and very few "own brand" items. I meal plan for a week and use my freezer to store meat etc and only go once per week to avoid un-necessary trips.

AppleKatie · 01/05/2020 07:18

Yes mine has gone up similarly. Part of it is eating much more at home than usual but that doesn’t account for the whole difference the cost of food has gone up undoubtably.

PrimalLass · 01/05/2020 07:20

No because I'm not spending nearly £50 a week on school and work lunches.

nannieann · 01/05/2020 07:20

As others have said, our pattern of shopping has changed completely. Over a month I would visit 4 different supermarkets plus Lidl and occasionally Aldi, with most money spent at Asda, but all smallish amounts. I'm now doing a shop a week, either Asda or Tesco, spending about twice as much as before. I particularly like Tesco's system. They've got this completely sussed. However, the savings on eating out, pub visits and petrol more than compensates, and I prefer my own cooking anyway.

DeathMetalMum · 01/05/2020 07:21

Ours has gone up. Prices have edged up slightly even in aldi. I've also noticed a lack of offers on things I'd normally buy in the other supermarkets such as Tesco/Asda. I'm still at work but take a packed lunch most days. Dp and dd2 who normally has school dinners as shes in infants, are also both at home all the time so we are eating a lot more food.

I have bought more treats than I normally would, and I've bought different things for lunch also. So our overall food bill has gone up a lot.

DragonMamma · 01/05/2020 07:21

Oh yes, we usually spend around £110-120 a week on a shop for 2A + 2C although only half take stuff to work/school.

We are easily spending £200 a week now. My Tesco shop is arriving today and that is £160 and the last one only came Sunday Confused plenty of wine though Grin

Di11y · 01/05/2020 07:23

ours has gone up but we'd have spent around the same in buying lazy lunches at work. when you think it's every single meal and snack, no work meals or free school meals it's not horrendous.

TheDrsDocMartens · 01/05/2020 07:23

More expensive substitutes is our issue as we usually buy cheapest.

beggingforsleep · 01/05/2020 07:25

Yep. Normally spent about £150 for two adults, a toddler and a baby but we moved in with my mum before lockdown, the toddler is home all the time (usually she ate lunch and dinner at nursery four days a week) and the baby is now weaned and has a huge appetite. Shop is now £260 a week.

My mum does insist on organic though.

tara66 · 01/05/2020 07:29

yes - having to buy from very expensive small food sellers who deliver. Prices are at least 3x what used to pay from large super markets but cannot get any delivery slots for them expect for Morrison's food boxes which I wont get again unless desperate.

Ragwort · 01/05/2020 07:33

Yes, but off set against no takeaways (tried one locally but not very good here), drinks in the pub, meals out, petrol etc.

We are also eating ‘bigger and better’ meals at home ... nothing else to do, no quick sandwich type meal before going out for the evening for example. Our DS is home from Uni so we are buying more food ... but he did say he didn’t need his top up Uni allowance so that’s a saving. Grin. Alcohol bill certainly a lot higher....... Wine

Strawberrycreamsundae · 01/05/2020 07:35

My Ocado shop for two of us has gone up by £35-£40 easily, with no extras or treats. I’m trying to be frugal but the impossibility of getting delivery slots is so stressful I’m going for any I can get. Ocado charge £6.99 for delivery which is a rip off imo.
I’m shopping every 10-14 days where I can.

Sosadandempty · 01/05/2020 07:36

Yes I am spending between £150 and £170 a week for four of us - me and 3 teenagers, two of whom eat masses. Sainsbury’s as that’s the only shop nearby that feels safe in how they have organiser their social distancing etc.

Beautiful3 · 01/05/2020 07:38

Yep, ours has gone up by £50 per week. The basic range is sold out everytime, so the expensive brands end up being substituted in my online shop. There doesnt seem to be any deals or offers at the moment either. The price of kitchen roll has really shot up so I've bought linen napkins, to wash and reuse instead. Also we are eating more fruit, biscuits, chocolate and crisps!

Sosadandempty · 01/05/2020 07:38

On the other hand I am not doing top up shops any more so maybe it evens out.

WickedGoodDoge · 01/05/2020 07:38

Yes, I’m trying to not work out how much it’s going up by, but I keep telling myself we’re not paying for school lunches (or the school bus which is very expensive) and DH’s lunch is much less expensive (plus he doesn’t have his monthly train ticket to buy now) so between normal meals out of the home plus transport, we’re probably saving a bit overall.

TigerJoy · 01/05/2020 07:39

Yeah we're spending a fortune

Obviously eating at home instead of 1 if not 2 meals at work. Also I used to eat fairly standard boring things every day in the office - now we're both at home we're having fancier and more complicated stuff to cheer us up. We've both put on weight too....and that's not even thinking about the booze....

Fred578 · 01/05/2020 07:39

I’m spending about £200 a week. There are 5 of us (2 adults and 3 kids) I used to spend around £120

Frangipanini · 01/05/2020 07:40

Yep, food bill has been up to £300 one week. That does include about £50 alcohol though. I am making drastic changes to get it down.

Fred578 · 01/05/2020 07:41

I have had to switch from shopping at Asda to shopping in Sainsbury’s though... I’m blaming that for some of the increase in cose

Fred578 · 01/05/2020 07:41

*cost

baubled · 01/05/2020 07:41

Yep food shop has increased massively! I've found a renewed love for baking which ain't helping and I've been going to Tesco instead of my normal Aldi as they've got more choice so I end up with all sorts in my trolley BlushBlush

merrygoround51 · 01/05/2020 07:42

Yes mine has gone up to that amount, we are treating ourselves though as we are spending on nothing else
