My alcohol bill has Blush

LuminousAmber · 01/05/2020 01:54

That’s absolutely extortionate. What on Earth are you eating, unicorn?

We’re a family of 5 (with two pre-teens who eat near adult amounts and a toddler) and our average bill is £100 a week.

One weekly Asda shop and also top ups at the Co-op...although we have a fridge freezer in the garage so can buy, for example, a weeks worth of milk (3 x 6pinters), fruit for a week etc more cheaply in the asda shop and still store them.

We shop ‘wisely’ and meal plan but we don’t scrimp or even budget particularly. Lots of decent meat, a fair amount of non-essentials.

DroppedBoxxedRuth · 01/05/2020 01:59

I'm in Aus. Usually our weekly shop is $180-200. The last few weeks it's been $300-350.

I'm telling myself I am buying more stuff ,and there aren't too many specials to buy but I'm concerned for those that can't afford for their shopping to go up that much.

CrowleysBentley · 01/05/2020 02:12

Food shop has gone up by about £60 per week here, three adults, now spending £180. DS is working from home, IT support, some days, some nights, and going through lots of food and a constant stream of coffee. DD is home on furlough and seems to have developed an addiction to smoothies and popcorn. Usually depending on what shifts they are on both have at least 5 meals per week each out of the house. Plus we are all snacking more, and we're going through so much coffee it's ridiculous. We're using about £15 a month more electricity too (key meter).

Sammymommy · 01/05/2020 02:15

Yep, food shop has gone up so much and I barely buy anything...

So convenient when money has stop coming in...

Zandra123 · 01/05/2020 02:24

Yes definitely seen an increase in cost, Its scary

snop · 01/05/2020 02:32

Yes used to spend £80ish a week for two adults and a child. Now it £150

SquirtleSquad · 01/05/2020 02:34

We are a family of 5 it's gone up about £50 to £120ish

TheStarryNight · 01/05/2020 02:57

Yup. Prices of things I buy regularly have gone up 10-15% on average, DH is eating five extra meals a week at home and I’m often having to buy more expensive substitutes for things that are unavailable. It’s gone from about £100 a week to about £140.

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 01/05/2020 03:00

Family of 5 here with 2 bug teenage boys. Used to spend 120 a week at aldi and Tesco. Now it's about 170 a week. Buying More snacks and ice lollies to keep them happy

marblesgoing · 01/05/2020 03:01

Yep. Last months food budget was set at £100 a week and we managed to get through nearly £600 by the end of the month 😳
Two adults, two dc that eat adult sized portions and two dogs

DeRigueurMortis · 01/05/2020 03:08

Yes - spending a lot more on home shopping but also need to offset that by how much we are not spending on school dinners, lunch for me and DH at work etc

Overall, especially we are not paying for petrol/commuting we are better off.

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 01/05/2020 04:31

More on home shopping by about 30% at least, if not 50. But then I'd eat at work and do would dp, and we have far fewer takeaways, so altogether we spend less.

Gatehouse77 · 01/05/2020 04:39

Ours has gone up. DS home from Uni, more alcohol (and mixers) and more meals bring eaten at home. More toilet rolls as, apart from when I’m doing volunteer work 1-2 times a week, everyone’s going only at home and more tissues courtesy of allergies 🙄.

KatherineJaneway · 01/05/2020 04:45

Costs have gone up.

NaomiFromMilkShake · 01/05/2020 05:02

Yes

We are menu planning, but it is nicer stuff, meat from the butchers(delivered) we have taken to having rolled sirloin (which is eye wateringly exensive) but also the Tesco bill is very large, thankfully we are at a stage in our life where we can afford it. We have a separate cost in Costco , wine, beer, orange juice etc, to be honest I am not really adding it up as it is needed and is not putting us under any strain.

I will say that the Tesco shop full of treats for DS and DH, the last shop contained chocolate, Tangtastic, kettle crisps, etc

DS has decided to set up a cocktail night for Saturday and Sunday evenings so we are buying vodka, gin, grenadine etc which is forcing things up for now.

HealingCalmingSoothing · 01/05/2020 05:20

Yes!!! I am spending about £130 at Ocado weekly and £100 at Sainsbury's click and collect.

My way of dealing with the anxiety regarding health and also filling spare time is to buy really good quality, organic (where need be) produce and making delicious meals from them.

Nutritious and variety are the two words driving everything.

I won't go to the local markets anymore, nor Aldi or B&M or Tesco to top up with cheaper produce (such as almond milk which we drink 1l daily, £1.80 Ocado. Always £1 B&M for example.

This is just for a family of four.

I know it is ridiculous and I am trying to make savings where I can. For example having meat free days.

I am just grateful to be able to afford to do this for now, it may not last if our jobs go.

We were previously spending about £120 per week but then plus school lunches, bought lunches for adults, the odd take away and probably dining out once a week.

We are saving a lot in petrol and general shopping so it's a saving overall and I feel we will be better placed when we get out into the world to fight this thing, due to nutrient rich diet. Who knows, but it is helping me fight off anxiety and has become a focus for me.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 01/05/2020 05:23

Yes but we're snacking because we're in and bored, there are very few special offers in the shops and the cost of food generally seems to have increased.

Jojo19834 · 01/05/2020 05:29

Yea, a lot of Ocado offers have gone but I am now eating 3 meals a day, 7 days a week at home. This would have been about half pre lockdown so I’m saving overall in that respect. But yes, bit of a shock each week!

EarringsandLipstick · 01/05/2020 05:38

Agree. Mine has gone up a lot because a) I'm having to shop in a different supermarket due to restrictions & logistics, and it's more expensive b) very few offers c) having to buy branded (more expensive) products as I notice non-branded not available d) is usually pop to the shops in my lunch break / evenings a few times a week, whereas I'm now doing everything I can to buy as much as I can in one shop. This week I've only gone out one extra time, for milk.

Last week I spent about €170 (c £150 sterling) for one adult, 3 (hungry) kids

lollipoplola · 01/05/2020 05:43

Ours is similar op, 2 adults and 3DC (one still just having breast milk though). It is a little higher than usual but not by loads, funny thing is I'm actually eating less - I think because I'm a lot less active I'm not getting as hungry. I'v always bought lots of treats though to have throughout the day of in the evening when DC are asleep. I guess this is the reason ours hasn't increased sharply like lots of peoples.

Standrewsschool · 01/05/2020 05:47

Yes, use to spend £75-100, now spending £150.

Part of the increase is because we haven’t been to Costco, so having to buy kitchen roll, orange juice etc. Also have elder son home. But the main reasons are lack of offers, and buying branded goods because own brand are out of stock. And also dh going food shopping more so buying more treats etc.

Ohffs66 · 01/05/2020 05:48

Doubled here roughly there are 2 of us and normally between 3 or 4 small shops a week I'd say we spend maybe £80 a week. Currently averaging £150 in one big shop a week which is making me wince. But we are both home all day every day now, and I reckon I'm saving around £50 per week in travel, lunches, coffees etc, and then a similar amount on going to the pub / getting a takeaway each week.

SpillTheTeaa · 01/05/2020 05:52

Yes but everything is also going up....
in my last 2 Asda shops the veg has gone up twice in two weeks. Admittedly it's gone up a total of 10p per veg but every penny counts! Our shopping bill has doubled and we are not eating anymore than we normally would.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 01/05/2020 05:56

Was just thinking this. The thing is our shopping is not exactly full of luxuries unless your count toilet roll.

I guess it's down to availability and choice I am buying products and brands out of necessity now. All four of us always take lunch from home so that's not changed I estimate about £40-60 per week extra. I have stopped drinking as well so can't even blame that.
