Alcohol in lockdown

A friend posted asking if people were drinking every night due to lockdown, I had to comment and join the masses of people who said they do!

I'm on a keto diet so instead of eating crap, I drink on a night. I'm not worried I have a problem right now but worried it could go that way. Or is this just a short term coping mechanism? What are your thoughts!?

I think coping mechanism or not, it’s good to be very aware. I think you need to ask yourself how you would feel if you couldn’t have a drink for a few days / an evening. If it fills you with horror then it’s a warning you may be becoming reliant on it.

NotStayingIn · 30/04/2020 21:23

I have been drinking every single night. And I’m aware it could easily become a problem, but struggling to find the willpower to stop. But I made the resolution to stop Monday. Wish me luck.

I’d really recommend Alan Carr Easy Way to control alcohol. I was a massive drinker - every night and to excess at weekends. I never thought I’d be able to quit - drinking was such a big part of me and I felt scared to stop. It will be 3 years in June for me since I had a drink. I can honestly say it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. Especially at the moment - I’m so thankful I’m not reliant on it during lockdown. Being free of the anxiety and guilt that surrounds drinking to excess is such a relief.

@NotStayingIn good luck! Your mental health and your wallet will thank you!

dementedpixie · 30/04/2020 21:31

I'm still just having a drink on a Friday and Saturday night. I dont want to start drinking more often - slippery slope!

RapidRainbow · 30/04/2020 21:36

Good luck! My brother is an alcoholic and my sister has the hall marks of one too so I'm very self aware (as an anxiety sufferer I always have been). I feel I CAN stop (indeed when I run out I cope just fine) but right now I don't want to! I don't even think of it as 'coping' as me and my household are quite enjoying lockdown, it's just something to look forward to after a long day of parenting.

God I hate these threads! Get ready for the sanctimonious pearl clutches who have a hangover on their thimbleful of lager shandy on NYE 🙄

And yep DH and I have been having a bevvy most nights!

vera99 · 30/04/2020 21:39

Every night I'm afraid but don't start till 6 pm and then no more than half a bottle of wine. I should drink less maybe tmrw....

Dazedandconfused10 · 30/04/2020 21:42

I have consciously been drinking less during lockdown. I'm still having the occasional drink. There is a bottle of wine with my name on it for tomorrow but I actually drank more pre lockdown. - not looking down on those who are having a drinking every night - I definitely could!

lazylinguist · 30/04/2020 21:42

Yep you definitely have to be a sanctimonious pearl-clutcher to think that drinking every day isn't a great idea. Hmm I'm drinking a bit more than usual, but only maybe three nights a week.

The80sweregreat · 30/04/2020 21:44

Cheers!

AhGoGo · 30/04/2020 21:44

I was drinking a lot more/every night at the start but it’s settled right down to the odd beer every couple of day’s. I think it’s the riotous zoom session with too many tequila shots and the hangover that followed that done it. Wink

StSaulOfSnacks · 30/04/2020 21:50

I've been drinking every night. Decided that wasn't good so have had 3 nights alcohol free this week. Hope to keep to that or do 4 nights moving forward. My liver and my waistline will thank me

Woeismethischristmas · 30/04/2020 21:52

Drinking most nights about half a bottle. Pre lockdown a bottle a week so tripled maybe quadrupled. It sounds awful but stress of homeschooling 4 dc, financial worries, feel a bit helpless this is clearly not a problem I can fix, its like groundhog day with no end in sight.

NotStayingIn · 30/04/2020 21:56

Thanks for the info Axicat. I used to generally not drink Mon- Thur so really want to get back to that. I definitely feel better when I do that.

RapidRainbow · 30/04/2020 22:07

I'm so sorry if this is triggering for anyone or you are aware of this descending into a problem. I think for me is due to the sunny weather accelarting the summer holiday vibes, in associating lockdown with the summer holidays means I drink more as I don't work during that time (education though extended Mat leave).

I’m drinking a lot more than normal, not massive quantities but most nights. I feel like it’s the only enjoyable thing at the moment. And I am never driving! I have bought a spirits measure so a single gin and tonic is definitely a single.

Flymetothetoon · 01/05/2020 00:45

@lazylinguist LOL 😀
