Gresham College is an adult education college in London, they have a range of speakers on every subject under the sun, obviously they aren't in the college at the moment but they are being streamed. From tonight there is a Chris Whitty one, with his epidemiology hat on, talking about Covid 19. Should be available for a while if you are otherwise engaged.

Link should be on the Gresham College website.

It's well worth a watch. CW was excellent.

BTW, Gresham is indeed an "adult education college", but a very special one! It has been giving free lectures for 400 years.

It was founded in 1597 to encourage discussion and dissemination of very best in up-to-date human knowledge – back in a time before the word "scientist" had been coined and when science was known as "natural philosophy".

Its current objectives include, to:

• Foster academic consideration of contemporary issues and problems
• Challenge those who live and work in London and elsewhere to engage in intellectual debate
• Make a contribution to society through the pursuit, dissemination, and application of knowledge, by means of innovative collaboration and partnerships

(As you can tell, it is near to my heart!)

God. He's fabulous. I could listen to him all day. I've been a fan of his since day 1.

Haggisfish · 30/04/2020 20:43

Oh wow thanks for this.

Littlemiss74 · 30/04/2020 20:48

There’s something about this man that Iove. Clever, calm, and seems to really care. Always answers the questions so well in the daily briefings with no messing about. I can’t see us getting out of lockdown until Mr Whitty is happy to do so and I’d be happy if he’s happy.

Raccoon2020vision · 30/04/2020 22:00

Thank you so much for sharing that, I've sent it to several friends and family. He's an excellent speaker.

viques · 30/04/2020 22:03

perkingquietly thanks for the link.

Interesting talk, especially about how this disease progresses and affects the body, and the different strands of drug therapies they are looking at. No injected disinfectant or strong lights I noticed!

I thought he explained why distancing is so important to keep the R numbers down, it sounds as though he expects there to be a second wave which judging by the way more people are relaxing social distancing even now I suppose is inevitable. I suppose only then we will know if people who have already have had it will have some short term or complete immunity.

Thanks for the link.

I’m half way through it. He explains everything so clearly.

I’m now confident that I can join Professor Whitty at the podium during one of the number 10 press conferences Grin

viques · 30/04/2020 22:20

perkingfaintly sorry, I misread your name! Thanks again for the link and the information about Gresham, I only knew it through recommendation. There are a lot of talks online, great for those times when your brain needs a bit of a work out after a Netflix heavy week.

DodgyTrousers · 01/05/2020 08:28

Excellent thank you. Am a huge fan of CW and love to hear him speak.
Thank you 👍

tootyfruitypickle · 01/05/2020 09:57

Thanks for flagging this.

I was interested that at one point he said that herd immunity was a policy that would only be followed with the use of a vaccine.

It seems quite clear that he did not agree with this original policy - and this is definitely what was being planned at first I remember the press conferences very clearly! Wonder what Patrick Vallance thought, as the man who had to outline it.

tootyfruitypickle · 01/05/2020 09:58

I also find it interesting that no journalist will probably pick up on this- just ploughing on with the endless and pointless ‘when will we lift the lockdown’ questions!

B1rdbra1n · 01/05/2020 10:01

thanks very interesting!

Fustratedflo · 01/05/2020 10:29

Ah, I just love him!

Thank you!
