I wore a facemask doing my shopping today...

Yes, I initially felt self conscious, slightly embarrassed and generally a bit of an arse. However, the sky didn't fall in, nobody pointed and laughed at me and after a few minutes I'd gotten over the initial discomfort.
I know it's not a rule to wear one, but on the list of embarrassing things I've done in my lifetime, it's very near the bottom. 😷

I wear a mask if I ever go outside. I'm shielded. So don't tend too

I'm the same as above. I couldn't give two hoots if people laugh (and people have done so. Usually young women weirdly).

I've just brought my whole family. Including my kids a mask. At the end of the day if it helps even slightly. I'm doing it. As the corona virus will kill me. It would be a miracle if I survived. So I don't care what anyone else thinks.

papiermaches · 30/04/2020 16:52

pointless but crack on if the placebo makes you happy...

PestymcPestFace · 30/04/2020 16:53

I wear fabric masks because I work with shielded people. Thanks to this pandemic I work 7 days a week. If everybody wore a mask, I'd be less likely to kill my clients.

Most wfh people would need two masks. Wear it to the shop, then wash it. Plus a spare.

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 30/04/2020 16:54

We have to here, it's mandatory. Everyone is also wearing disposable gloves too. I don't put my gloves on until I have left my car and chuck them in the bin as soon as I've got rid of the trolley and then sanitize my hands. I don't think I'll ever get my head around it tbh, and that rule will be here for a long while yet.

whataboutbob · 30/04/2020 16:56

I’ll never look at Chinese / Japanese tourists wearing masks in London in the same way. I used to think they looked a touch paranoid, won’t be judgemental about it again.

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 30/04/2020 16:57

Although yesterday my mask was the reason I had a massive sneezing fit in the grocery store, after my hair got caught in it and went up my nose. The people shopping near me did not look impressed but at least they kept their distance after that! Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 30/04/2020 16:58

I live in Germany, where masks / face coverings in shops and on public transport are now mandatory
Same in several other European and Asian countries

They aren't all idiots in those countries
Neither are their governments

So no reason to be embarassed by following best practice, OP
Wear your mask 👍

Northernsoullover · 30/04/2020 16:59

@PestymcPestFace no one is listening, or reading what you say. If they had they wouldn't be posting 'I saw a man touch his face wearing one' or 'you would need to change it frequently'.
I've read the evidence. It seems other people don't want to or are being deliberately contrary.
I know damn well my mask doesn't offer ME much protection. I also know how to socially distance.

I'm getting delivery slots as DH is vulnerable so not really going out except for a walk, I did have to go to opticians and pick up a prescription as they couldn't deliver it but that is unusual. I decided to make myself a mask just in case but could I ask advice from mask wearers. If I wear a mask it will be for a couple of minutes at pharmacy or similar, I would put it on to go in and take it off when I come out, it could then be a couple of weeks till I need to wear it again. So do I need to wash it or it I hang it up in the sun will any virus on it die off? If I was wearing it longer term it would obviously need washing but not sure if it is in this case?

YgritteSnow · 30/04/2020 17:08

All these posters declaring it "pointless!" You just don't know this. No one does and more evidence is coming out to suggest it's worthwhile to wear one. You just don't want to and that's fine but stating them definitively to be pointless simply isn't known to be true.

BlueGheko · 30/04/2020 17:10

You can’t see the difference between the general public going out shopping and medical professionals who can’t stay 2m away from their patients?

No I don't, there are lots of places it's not possible to stay 2m away from other people, small local shops /buses/trains etc. I am a medical professional who has to wear masks at work btw. I also wear them to protect others when the above scenarios are unavoidable.

FedHimtoTigers1990 · 30/04/2020 17:12

Wearing a mask/face covering makes my glasses steam up...is that just me.

colditz · 30/04/2020 17:23

Well, when it comes to decisions about my family's health, I tend to go with "What would The WHO do?"

Not "what does our government reccomend.

This is because our government is seemingly staffed by complete fucking moron, and the WHO isn't.

PestymcPestFace · 30/04/2020 17:28

Fed you need a nose wire to reduce the gap at the top, pipe cleaners work well. Also try a strip of kitchen towel along the top edge.

kevintheorangecarrot · 30/04/2020 17:31

I wear full face shield and mask.

puffinandkoala · 30/04/2020 17:35

I have been wearing a cloth covering when in the supermarket. More and more shoppers are wearing masks or face coverings. It can't do any harm and may do a lot of good. Most other countries are making them compulsory, I don't think we are physiologically different in the UK!

fuzzyduck1 · 30/04/2020 17:35

I was in Thailand when it was all getting serious and everyone there was wearing then it felt a bit rude not to and I know they don’t really protect me but they do stop me from passing on anything if I had anything.
Now wearing one when going anywhere there are people about. Maybe that’s how Thailand has so few cases.

Wonderbag · 30/04/2020 17:35

Ah thanks
I have the glasses steaming up problem too

PestymcPestFace · 30/04/2020 17:37

What do The WHO recommend?
Depends what you read

Non-pharmaceutical public health measures for mitigating the risk and impact of epidemic and pandemic influenza, recommends face masks, 2020
apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/329438/9789241516839-eng.pdf?ua=1
Hmm hang on the pandemic is not flu, it is a coronavirus with an unprecedented level of asymptomatic infection.

Once the shit had hit the fan and 7.5 billion people wanted face masks it has updated the advice to, nah not needed.

Fabric face coverings are the sensible compromise. Reasonably effective and allows PPE to be preserved for the healthcare workers who jolly well need it because the are at most risk.

I haven’t been in a large shop since The week before lockdown and I wore one then. People stared.....a lot. Glad to hear hopefully they wouldn’t now.

noavailablename · 30/04/2020 17:43

Thailand has testing for anyone at a reasonable price.
Free testing for anyone at high risk or with symptoms.
Early admission to hospital and free treatment for Covid patients.
Strict quarantine for anyone entering the country from abroad.
Limited flights since February.
Everyone wears masks.
They don't shake hands or hug/kiss on greeting.
Also, they are very good at public health education and people do comply.
They remember SARS and MERS, so they really don't need telling twice.

lizzie1970a · 30/04/2020 17:43

Boris has just mentioned "face coverings".

noavailablename · 30/04/2020 17:45

Yes, going out without a mask in Thailand at the moment would be considered very rude and inconsiderate.

loobyloo1234 · 30/04/2020 17:49

BJ just said face coverings are a likely option in the next stage of coming out of lockdown. Funny that

VenusTiger · 30/04/2020 17:52

@BigChocFrenzy so you're implying what exactly Confused our govt is only 4 months old - give it a rest
