Covid

Has all this made you want to pack up and travel the world?

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, the tragedy of 26,000 deaths so far and a chance that someone I love and I could die of it, I have had a rude awakening regarding my perspective on life.

I know it is not possible to go anywhere right now, but once this has settled down, the thought of upping sticks and going on a worldwide adventure is all too appealing.

It's probably all a pipe dream as I have 2 primary aged children, but I can't stop thinking about al the opportunities that are out there that I might never do.

Anyone feel like this?

Yes!

DH and I have talked about how we want to make sure we actually go on the holidays (instead of just talking about them!), and make travel a priority.

As soon as we are allowed to travel again we will.

Nope, I look at all the images of wildlife returning and pollution reducing and it makes me quite happy not to travel.

Yes, very much. We already were spending all our spare time exploring Europe in a campervan and were due to do a lot more of it this year. I can't wait to get back, it's utterly joyous.

When I saw the reports of the families on sudden lockdown in their hotel rooms in Tenerife, I felt I would never go on a family package holiday again. Then all the thousands of British tourists stranded on cruise ships or unable to get flights home, it has definitely put me off travelling abroad.

What??? No quite the opposite. I want to live on a piece of land away from everyone and be more self sufficient. Each to their own though.

If you are set on travelling with younger children look up WOOFING. It's where you volunteer on organic farms either in UK or worldwide. They provide bed and board. You provide labour. I did it with my primary child and it was a wonderful experience you can go for as little or as long as you want.

“Then all the thousands of British tourists stranded on cruise ships or unable to get flights home ......... “

Agree. Was always dubious of these floating infection hubs before, with regular stories of norovirus breakouts, etc., on board. Wouldn’t set foot on a gangplank after this if you offered me a free, first class world trip, thanks.

Ryan air boss this morning was saying it’s impossible to social distance on a plane so they would have to do temperature tests but would you get your money back if your temperature was high? What if you’re ok on the way out but when you fly home your temperature is up and you can’t fly home?

Report
Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/05/2020 09:58

The temperature test thing wouldn't be accurate enough I don't think. Maybe if a vaccine becomes available it could be a requirement to travel abroad.

No, quite the opposite.

That said, I haven't been on a plane since 2005 anyway and have no intention of going on one again. I'm very uncomfortable with the environmental impact of unnecessary travel. If you can do it in a way that isn't having a major negative impact and contributing to climate change and all the suffering that brings, have at it, but taking a load of flights all over the place without really good reason (because yes, I recognise that some travel is necessary) seems mad.

It’s not made me want to travel around the world as such, but it has made me want to travel to a far flung country and live there.

Report
Rebelwithallthecause · 01/05/2020 10:19

It’s definitely made me want to travel less.

Yes, life is too short to spend it in your backyard. So much to experience out there. I can’t wait to travel again.

Smileyoriley · 01/05/2020 10:51

I definitely don't want to travel, especially by plane. I've never fancied cruising so no change there.

Rebelwithallthecause · 01/05/2020 10:58

Il still travel by car using ferries to get places if I do want to.

I won’t be flying

I don’t understand this things will never be the same again thing. It will. There will be a vaccine. Life will resume in much the same guise as it was before. Yes, things will change of course. Sadly some shops & businesses will go under. Holidays may be more expensive for a while. Hopefully it will be a boost for UK tourism. But if there’s one thing for sure, in today’s world, we have a way of quickly putting the bad stuff to memory & moving on as we did before!

Once we are all vaccinated etc, are people still going to live in fear?! I certainly won’t, I’ll be put there fully embracing all life has to offer. I can’t wait to travel locally & abroad, see my family more often, run around soft play with my kids & give my kids nursery workers a massive hug & a medal 😂

Bol I think there are a lot of doom mongers on MN. Yes, life will be different for a while, probably a couple of years - the economy will tank, things will become more expensive. But to say "things will never be the same again" is dramatic and ridiculous. It will take a while, but life will go back to normal.

i think mother nature is telling us the opposite is what is good for us

Report
Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/05/2020 12:39

This has nothing to do with "mother nature", it's a pandemic caused by a virus. Hmm

I feel the opposite

Am not going on flight based holidays anymore

Instead I’ll holiday at home, or somewhere in the UK.

With family and friends

Yes! I fancy Selling my house, buying a RV and touring the world like they do on the YouTube channels! I might even start a YouTube channel!

Yes. I would love to go on holiday abroad again and there are many parts of the world that I would love to see.

I'm not a big socialite, but I do like to see other countries. Psychologically, lockdown is making me feel trapped, and as though my world has shrunk to just my own house and garden (which I do appreciate that l am lucky to have, btw). I can't even see my elderly parents.

We managed to squeeze one in last summer and will be forever grateful it happened. This whole thing has highlighted to us how you need to grasp life, take that trip etc.

This hasn’t but ‘Race Across the World’ has.

The Iguazu falls in Brazil looked amazing.

Has all this made you want to pack up and travel the world?
