Has all this made you want to pack up and travel the world?

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, the tragedy of 26,000 deaths so far and a chance that someone I love and I could die of it, I have had a rude awakening regarding my perspective on life.

I know it is not possible to go anywhere right now, but once this has settled down, the thought of upping sticks and going on a worldwide adventure is all too appealing.

It's probably all a pipe dream as I have 2 primary aged children, but I can't stop thinking about al the opportunities that are out there that I might never do.

Anyone feel like this?

@chimichangaz

We had an amazing extended family holiday to California last year (so, so lucky that we did it when we did). We watched Rick Stein in SF this week and it brought back such lovely memories that despite my deep loathing of long haul flights I just wish we could jump on a plane tomorow and be back there.

chimichangaz · 30/04/2020 18:51

@thejollygargler I was in Palm Springs for a conference and then a couple of days in LA....loved PS, next time I will do some coast too. I keep getting pangs and having to look at my photos....

TheGinGenie · 30/04/2020 18:59

I also always feel this way and it hasn't changed

Alex50 · 30/04/2020 19:41

I am very lucky to have travelled the world, I have been to so many beautiful places. I am now just grateful I have my family round me and we are all healthy and safe at home. I will be quite happy to holiday in the UK for the rest of my life. I have been watching race across the world, amazing scenery round South America, i’m quite happy watching from home than actually travelling anywhere now.

Mintypylonsfryingsurplus · 30/04/2020 19:52

Yep think about it all the time. Was going to go in November but had a bad feeling about it so left it.
Was going to do it a low impact way one long plane ride then work way back using other means.
Done some travelling but this has made me how short life is.
Was postponing for 3 years but a lot can happen then, maybe will go for it once restrictions are lifted.
But I think travel insurance/ suspicions of tourists from such a highly affected area such as UK may make it harder.
Also we need to rebuild UK up, so maybe summer travelling in a camper van in 2 years might be better?
All I know there is more to life than work, buying pointless crap, putting up with crap from people and just living for the next piss up, new handbag or 2 week holiday.
I dunno, I just dont want to go back to the drudge of before..

MerryInthechelseahotel · 30/04/2020 19:58

I would happily never fly again

40somethingJBJ · 30/04/2020 20:08

Quite the opposite. It’s made me really want to pack up and move even more rural and less peopley, be more self sufficient and just generally stay home more. I’m not big on foreign travel anyway to be fair, can’t abide flying.

nearlynermal · 30/04/2020 20:18

I absolutely ache to go back to Thailand. Or I keep thinking of the first morning I woke up in Mexico, on a little bay, with pelicans hunting.

missmouse101 · 30/04/2020 20:21

No. Overpopulation, mass travel and environmental devastation have contributed to this pandemic. When will people learn they have to modify what they do?

PurpleFlower1983 · 30/04/2020 20:23

I feel the opposite - spent a lot of time going here, there and everywhere and this has made me have an appreciation of home.

Chillipeanuts · 30/04/2020 20:26

Quite the opposite actually but I’m knocking on a bit and widely travelled. Completely understand why a younger person would feel this way.

KoalasandRabbit · 30/04/2020 20:40

It's made me nervous about travelling but I'm older and we've done a lot of travelling in past 10-15 years especially after friend died very suddenly at around 40, made realise any day could be your last. I'ld be worried now about getting ill abroad but once over will travel again in couple of years.

cptartapp · 30/04/2020 20:47

Yes. My parents both died tragically in their 50's and 60's and this has been my plan since. If my investments recover enough so I can retire at 55 in seven years time, DH will hopefully finish too and we're off.

We look at PIL who deteriorate on into their 80's with stacks of cash piling up in the bank, spending nothing and never having got further than Devon annually for the last forty years and will do anything to travel as much as possible for as long as possible.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 30/04/2020 20:53

No, although I'd be sad never to sit on a beautiful sunny beach drinking sangria again the thought of travelling now fills me with fear. There are beaches in England I can sit on.

Popcat120 · 30/04/2020 20:59

Not travel, but it's made us realise that we want to pack up and move nearer to the coast next year!
Were so far Inland, and it's not where we want to bring up a family.

userxx · 30/04/2020 21:25

Yes, life is very very short.

AgentProvocateur · 30/04/2020 21:35

Yes, I love going to different countries anyway, but this has made me realise that life is short and there’s a whole lot of world to see. I can’t wait to get to SE Asia again - I’ll never tire of Vietnam.

FelineUK · 30/04/2020 22:49

Absolutely - been dreaming these past few days of vanliving.. thinking of the freedom, subconsciously fitting out the van.. I'm 54 and catching up with travel as during my 20s and 30s I was married to an alcoholic who drank all our money and I only first went abroad properly when I divorced him. Now remarried, both DH and I love to travel one or twice a year and I'm so going to miss not going this year - hanging on to the hotel bookings, which I can cancel up until September, just in case!

bluetongue · 30/04/2020 23:08

Yes, but I’m restricted budget wise as to what I can do. As soon as I save up the money and the Australian borders are open again I’ll be travelling.

Every year there’s a voice in my head saying ‘maybe you should be sensible this year and save your money instead of travel abroad’. Strangely I’ve had another voice telling me to travel while I can in case for some reason I can’t anymore.I wasn’t exactly thinking a pandemic would be the issue but I’m so glad I’ve already fulfilled so many of my travel dreams. My house and car are nothing flash but travel is what I live for.

KenDodd · 30/04/2020 23:47

I agree. I love to travel, more than anything else but I know I shouldn't. Lower impact travel is so much more expensive though and takes so long (train). I hardly buy anything but that's because I don't want anything, I don't want loads of clothes, shoes or other crap. It's easy to give up stuff you don't want anyway, much harder to give up something you love.

Raccoon2020vision · 30/04/2020 23:49

I don't think it will be possible to travel again for a long, long time in the way we used to take for granted. It's made me very, very grateful for the travelling I was able to do.

Valenciaoranges · 01/05/2020 00:18

More than happy to stay at home for holidays,

Ozgirl75 · 01/05/2020 02:18

Totally. I’m in Australia and feel quite trapped so once borders open up firstly we are going all over Aus during various school holidays and then the world is our oyster.
Kids have spend loads of time on google earth playing “roll the dice” and making a list of places they want to visit. It’s really brought home how lucky we are with our freedom normally and also how quickly life can change and I want to make sure I make the most of it.

CheshireDing · 01/05/2020 06:27

Very much for me !

We have 2 primary children be 1 nursery, I met DH whilst travelling and have wanted to take the children.

Hopefully we will figure something out for next year.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/05/2020 07:44

I actually think that foreign travel will resume quicker than a lot of people expect. There are a great deal of poorer countries that absolutely rely on tourism as a part of their economy.

I think it will become more expensive though.
