Wiping Down Shopping

This might have already been covered but without trawling through I just thought I’d ask anyway.

So...when you get your shopping home (or delivered) are you all cleaning every single item? If so, what are you using to clean with? Would an antibacterial wipe be suffice or does it need to be bleach? I am wiping things over with antibacterial wipe but a bit half heartedly tbh. It’s quite a daunting task having to wipe every single item before putting it away in the fridge/freezer/cupboard.
Just wondered how everyone else is tackling this.

I'm now in touch with my inner OCD. Took me 58 years and a pandemic but we got there in the end. Grin

H1978 · 30/04/2020 18:26

Wash with soapy water and leave bags in basement for a couple of days

Annoying as hell to do but I have health anxiety so it’s peace of mind. I don’t go out shopping but I would definitely wash all clothes and shower if I had to go

Blackbirdblue30 · 30/04/2020 18:33

I do. Unpack on the kitchen counter, spritz with bleach solution and wipe. Anything fresh that can be repackaged goes into a freezer bag. The fruit/veg goes into the sink and washed. It seems a bit much at times but the sense of control and then not worrying about your food is worth it iykwim.

Pootle40 · 30/04/2020 18:48

No. Doesn't even cross my mind.

septemberismyfavouritemonth · 30/04/2020 18:50

No, not doing this. Putting it away and washing my hands.

Ninny67 · 30/04/2020 18:54

No I don't... It's not officially advised and seems futile as impossible to eliminate all risk.

littlemeitslyn · 30/04/2020 18:56

Unfortunately due to chronic illness I can't go shopping but thanks for the comment

Iamamoleinahole · 30/04/2020 20:21

I always do this it’s absolutely necessary with incoming food and post.

Easilyanxious · 30/04/2020 20:23

No wiping stiff just washing hands and then surface was on wiped down
Would take ages to wash all shopping and I'm concerned would end up being out fridge to long ?
But then we've also had take away which others aren't again washing hands etc

leafygarden · 30/04/2020 20:24

No - don't wash anything - apart from my hands

Oblomov20 · 30/04/2020 20:26

No. I haven't cleaned anything.

JemilyJ · 30/04/2020 20:28

I haven’t been, just washing my hands after. But the last time I did wipe down the things I used same day (a friend had been on about it and got to me)

Oblomov20 · 30/04/2020 20:30

How long can it take to get corona? What's the longest possible time? If I haven't been ill in the last 2 months, I may well have had it, without symptoms possibly?
But I can't see how wiping, or rather NOT wiping my shopping in the last 2 months will have changed anything.

browzingss · 30/04/2020 20:32

I haven’t been no, and have managed to stay covid free! I’d theoretically give certain things an extra clean eg loose fruit/veg, but in reality everything I have bought is packaged and I feel like the risk is minimal, provided everyone follows hand hygiene.

Wipes are one of the things that are still perpetually out of stock whenever I go to the supermarket too, this is probably whyGrin

vodkaredbullgirl · 30/04/2020 20:35

No, just get rid of boxes that are delivered put stuff away, wash hands.

LonelyFromCorona · 30/04/2020 20:36

Wash your hands after putting it away.

Wash your hands regularly.

Avoid touching face.

All the standard stuff they were telling us to do at the start of all this. Little effort but decent effect.

Washing everything isn't worth the hassle imo vs the low level of risk that one of your tins has the virus on. Which you could just wash off your hands anyway...

eurochick · 30/04/2020 20:41

I'm not washing shopping. I wash hands after putting it away. And wash fruit under the tap before eating as normal.

mogtheexcellent · 30/04/2020 21:00

No but I'm not using it immediately. So it mostly gets chucked in the freezer nor fridge and the rest sits unused in my utility room for a good while. I always washed fruit and veg before putting away anyhow. Only a rinse under water though.

Far too lazy to do anything else.

ofwarren · 30/04/2020 21:02

@mogtheexcellent
The freezer preserves coronavirus for up to 2 years.

BooseysMom · 30/04/2020 21:13

Apologies if this has already been mentioned. It was on the radio last week and a doctor said the virus can survive for 48 hours on paper and card and 72 on glass and plastic. I wipe everything that comes into the house with anti bac wipes. What's worrying is people i work in close proximity with don't do this and then they might be responsible for bringing it in.

chocolatviennois · 30/04/2020 21:20

I put non fridge items in a quarantine bag for a few days and then put them in the cupboards - or get them out of the bag if needed for particular recipe immediately. With fridge items I take fruit and vege out of plastic bags/wrapping and put them in the drawers and eggs onto egg rack. I use diluted washing up liquid on a cloth on most of the remainder..eg. milk containers, meat and fish that are in a plastic wrapping. I think it is particularly important to wash glass jars as covid can live longer on them.

chocolatviennois · 30/04/2020 21:24

I forgot to say that if it is sunny once my shopping bags are empty I put them in the back garden for a while as apparently the virus doesn't like strong sunlight.

Rebootingagain · 30/04/2020 21:39

I haven’t been no, and have managed to stay covid free!

Unless you have been tested every week, you can’t possibly know that.

Loads of people have had it and been carriers and have no idea

MindyStClaire · 30/04/2020 22:04

No, we haven't at all. The Irish food safety people advised no need to do so. See here.

We often leave post or parcels a while before opening, but that's sheer laziness rather than quarantine.

BlackeyedSusan · 30/04/2020 22:05

dishcloth and washing up liquid.
