Wiping Down Shopping

This might have already been covered but without trawling through I just thought I’d ask anyway.

So...when you get your shopping home (or delivered) are you all cleaning every single item? If so, what are you using to clean with? Would an antibacterial wipe be suffice or does it need to be bleach? I am wiping things over with antibacterial wipe but a bit half heartedly tbh. It’s quite a daunting task having to wipe every single item before putting it away in the fridge/freezer/cupboard.
Just wondered how everyone else is tackling this.

I don't wipe the letters. I open them, read them, then either put the contents in a box in the spare room or straight in the bin. Then wash my hands. The 'box' is then left for a few days ( no hardship 🤣).

*Deux there's better guidance out there than that. It's been proven than it can be transferred over a great distance & in much less time

randomer · 30/04/2020 15:54

" close sustained contact " fair enough. I suppose the problem is some sufferers don't show symptoms.

Thanks for the link.

AmelieTaylor · 30/04/2020 15:59

@Puffthemagicdragongoestobed. The thing is, no one knows how long ago those people touched that before it was tested.
There is NO need to be so nasty about people who are simply trying to do their best to avoid getting a deadly virus. If you don't want to do that, fine, I think it's madness not to do your best 🤷🏻‍♀️

Deux · 30/04/2020 16:02

@Randomer. No probs.

Spirali · 30/04/2020 16:09

We do it. Once home we have a shower, put clothes in the machine and wipe everything with an antibac wipe. Tbh I feel like it’s a bit excessive now but Sod’s law will surely kick in if we stop, I know it 🤣

littlemeitslyn · 30/04/2020 16:12

No, I have a life

AmelieTaylor · 30/04/2020 16:15

No, I have a life

Gee, that's witty & original 🙄

I have a life too & keeping it is quite a high priority.

If you have time to post here, you have time to wash a deadly virus off your shopping.

Imboredinthehouse · 30/04/2020 16:20

@randomer link about the 15 mins

publichealthmatters.blog.gov.uk/2020/03/04/coronavirus-covid-19-what-is-social-distancing/

nahnonever · 30/04/2020 16:23

I was using Milton solution to clean my shopping, then realised they have changed the formula for it to effectively kill coronavirus. So I wasted so much time.. so annoying. And I also wasn't leaving it saturated for the full 15 minutes 🤦‍♀️

Then I started using dettol aerosol spray, then looked that up and dettol say that is not effective At killing the virus.
Fuck sake.

Back to original dettol and following proper instructions... such a faff, but I would never forgive myself if someone in my family got it

TimeWastingButFun · 30/04/2020 16:24

@EngagedAgain
I use a well wrung out cloth, it does get slightly damp but it's OK

Rebootingagain · 30/04/2020 16:27

@AmelieTaylor

I don’t get this logic at all to be honest unless you are very high risk.

People thinking they aren’t going to come into contact with and catch this are living in cloud cuckoo land.

I would rather have it now while the hospitals are relatively quiet than wait for the second wave.

Chloemol · 30/04/2020 16:27

Not cleaning, just wash my hands after

HoHoHolyCow · 30/04/2020 16:27

We put anything that doesn't need to be refrigerated or used immediately into quarantine in the garage for 3 days.
Everything else gets wiped with a dilute bleach solution.
Fruit and veg washed with soap for 20 seconds (as if washing hands).

It's definitely the bit of lockdown that I'm enjoying the least!

BenjiB · 30/04/2020 16:52

No I don’t and won’t. Only thing I do do is wash my hands after.

FinallyHere · 30/04/2020 17:34

No

Put away, Wash hands

Would consider it if we had someone in the household who needed to be shielded.

Bol87 · 30/04/2020 17:45

If only I had the time.. but toddler, newborn, full time working partner, I barely have time to wash myself let alone my food! When getting amazon etc deliveries, I do remove all packaging and pop it straight in the bin and then wash my hands. My whole family is low risk, so I deem washing shopping not necessary. My vulnerable mum does though & that’s fair enough!

The virus ain’t going anywhere.. are people who are washing their shopping going to not go out & about until a vaccine?! Cos the risk is always gona be there but if you are under 60 with no health conditions, chances are you’ll be fine if you do catch it!

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 17:52

Not at all. I think if it was that aggressively transferred from post, food packaging etc I'd already be dead by now.

Ifailed · 30/04/2020 17:56

presumably, after washing all of the shopping, people then wash the bags it was carried in and, if appropriate, the boot of the car?

CookPassBabtridge · 30/04/2020 17:58

I started off religiously wiping everything with dettol wipes.. but the last few weeks I haven't bothered 🤷🏻‍♀️

brassbrass · 30/04/2020 18:01

I'm more worried about damage to people from all the extra cleaning products they're using to clean their food with tbh.

Pipandmum · 30/04/2020 18:04

Nope. Not at all. It's very low risk way of spreading.

AmelieTaylor · 30/04/2020 18:11

@Rebootingagain.

It's ok not to get something, it's fine not to do something, what I'm utterly fed up with is people being nasty about others who choose to do it.

I'm NOT in Cloud Cuckoo Land and there's no need for that

I am currently able to stay at home.
I am able to clean everything that comes into my house
I reduce every single opportunity of contracting this - why woukdnt I while I can?

You would prefer to get it sooner while you feel the hospitals are quieter. I would prefer to delay it for as long as I can in the hope they develop better treatments & better understand if how to treat it.

Each to their own, but there's no need for name calling.

AmelieTaylor · 30/04/2020 18:17

Mine is delivered, but I then deliver some to an elderly relative. I wash all the shopping, put this weeks bags in the spare room with a date on the outside one, then
package hers in last weeks bags.

If I was shopping at a supermarket and putting shopping in the boot of the car there would be at least a week between visits so the virus would no longer be an issue in the boot.

IcouldbutIwont · 30/04/2020 18:24

No, just giving hands a good wash after putting everything away

DetroitTheTourist · 30/04/2020 18:24

I clean cans with isopropyl alcohol. Leave then rinse. Veg gets washed i. Water only, dried, and through cooked.

Remove outer packaging wipe with soapy water, pack in ziplocks. If I can I then quarentine it for a few days. Not always possible.

Then wash clothes (by hand by necessity, total pain), wash self, soap on my shaved head, hang jeans outside for a day or so in sunlight.

I'm trying. Don't want to be a burden, and might still be of some use.
