I've been doing really well for the past few weeks. At the start of all this,I was so worried and scared. But I've managed to get in under control.
I'm nearly 36 weeks pregnant and have been trying to focus on that and stay off the news. Then stupidly,I managed to read a story of a pregnant woman in the UK who died a few weeks back. She was fit,healthy,37, adhering to socially distancing...the only underlying medical condition was gestational diabetes, which is what I have. She had the baby then died a few days later.

I know it's one case our many. But this is the closest to home it's got. I hate being so scared all the time.

Please be kind with any replies,I'm really struggling today.

Hi, I'm avoiding the news too generally but I did see that owing to lower pollution because of Covid19, several thousand
new mums have avoided pre-term births. Isn't that amazing?

Just think when your baby arrives you will be able to go on walks in clean air, that is such an unusual thing and wonderful for little babies whose prams are ar exhaust-pipe level.

It's bound to be a worrying time- at 36 weeks your mind is so full of what is ahead, and hormones are raging. I remember having insane road rage when I was 36 weeks! Be gentle with yourself, and find distractions, focus actively on a the positive things you can about your situation.

I’m sorry you’re feeling anxious today.
Late pregnancy is stressful enough as it is but this certainly doesn’t help.

As you say, this is one case across many many thousands. If we all spent long enough searching I’m sure a good number of us could find a case that feels worryingly close to home.
This feels very scary right now because it’s new, unknown and it’s all over the news and social media constantly right now so bear on impossible to get away from it.

I don’t know it will help ease your anxieties but maybe try and compare this virus to other risks you take in daily life; just because one person has a car accident on your commute to work, would that stop you driving that route? Just because someone choked on a burger would that stop you eating burgers? Just because someone drowned in the sea would that stop you visiting a beach?

I don’t know if what I’m saying is making much sense, but we take risks every day but these risks are so commonplace in our lives (like the risk of having a car accident) that you just accept the risk is there and drive your car anyway.

This virus is real yes, and it’s scary at times I agree. But just because one person sadly lost their life who happened to have a similar circumstances to you, it does not mean the same will happen to you. Just think how many hundreds of women with gestational diabetes have given birth to healthy babies and gone safely home since this virus emerged.

Try to put your worries aside, find a distraction today; read a book, have a long bath, enjoy a HOT cup of tea whilst you still can, because when your baby is here in just a few weeks, hot drinks will be a distant memory!

Thank you both for your replies. And yes, what you said about risk makes perfect sense. And I know this when I actually sit and think about it. But unfortunately,I tend to catastrophise, and it can be really hard to get my thoughts under control.

After posting here I used an app called Feel Better, and it genuinely did. I had a little cry as well as I do when I'm scared. But now I'm up and dressed and been for a walk with my 10 year old. I now intend to do some (diabetic!) Friendly baking then gonna settle down to watch a movie with son and have a nap this afternoon. I'm in my third year of a healthcare degree as well so have assignments to finish but to be frank, they can wait today.

Thank you again x
