If your shielded what date can you go on? Is it 3 months from the beginning of March?

You should probably shield until told otherwise. The danger has not gone away yet.

And yes he can be furloughed while shielding if the business can no longer afford to pay his wages.

I think the letter states 3 months from receiving it, but as they were so spread out it doesn't make sense. DH is taking it from the 23rd March, or thereabouts, when they announced the shielding. Why would it be the beginning of March?
And yes, shielding is one of the reasons for furloughing.

I think the 12 weeks is just an approximation and will probably be extended - it’s already been extended to end of June.

Dh only had his letter 2 weeks ago. Thank you I’ll tell him.

The letter says 12 weeks from the date on your letter. So my family can go out from 1st July unless anything changes.

Shielding is until you get your vaccine. Mum has been told not to expect any change until well into next year

They state 12 weeks from date of the letter. I expect they will extend longer. My husband is shielding and has accepted the fact that he will probably have to do so until there is a vaccine. Other people in his situation have been told to shield indefinitely. My husband was diagnosed with lymphoma at the beginning of February and is currently having chemotherapy. As we move forward I'm sure many will choose what risks they are willing to put themselves in. All in all it's the individuals choice how much of the guidance they follow.

DH is shielded but his letter was dated 8th April, so he is officially shielded until July.

But he has been told that if shielded he will have to wait for a vaccine and has to remain shielded til there is one. He asked what happens if there is no vaccine, and they admitted they don't know.

You can go out anytime you want to.

When it's sensible to go out is quite another thing.

Some random date decided by the Govt isn't going to make it suddenly safe.

I think people are really going to just have to make their own decisions:choices, in conjunction with health professions they trust. 🙁 The R rate & your personal level of willingness to take the risk - balanced of course with the risk of then passing it on & making demands on the NHS. (and living your life/seeing family)

We've started a discussion thread about this elsewhere but we just don't know. For some of the most vulnerable shielding is not much different from their everyday life
For others we spend our whole time trying to avoid infections
For others they lived relatively normal lives until this virus came along
We wont know instil the end of May
