Had a letter from DVLA saying direct debit for vehicle tax won’t continue if MOT not in place.

MOT was due to run out 25th April but has been automatically extended by 6 months because of Coronavirus. The letter says I need an up to date Test certificate in order for my direct debit to renew for my vehicle tax to start on 30th April.

Will this just be an auotomated letter that isn’t taking in to consideration the new date? I’ve checked online and my cars MOT has been extended to October. I can’t get in contact with anyone at DVLA and worried that my car won’t be taxed!!

I would assume that if MOTs have been extended for 6 months then your current MOT is an up to date test certificate.

It would be like if you bought a second hand car with 6 months MOT left, you could still tax and insure it on the current MOT certificate.

You have got an up to certificate because of the extension. This could be an automated letter, but it could be as it says, in which case you are fine.

I wouldn't assume the direct debit will automatically carry on though, you might need to go on and renew that.

If your vehicle tax and MOT run out in April

You cannot renew your vehicle tax until your MOT expiry date has been extended. It will be extended a few days before it was originally due to expire.

This means you might need to wait until later in April to tax your vehicle.

Check that the MOT expiry date has been extended before you tax your vehicle.

It definitely has been extended now but it might not have been when the letter was sent out.
