What will happen to supermarket queues when it starts raining?

I know lockdown had been a different experience for different people but the sunshine must have made it a bit more bearable for everyone. Apparently it's going to be wet now for quite a few days.

What impact will that have on the queues? Yes, I know there's nothing to stop people queuing in the rain but will they? Will the usual quiet/busy times apply or will everyone shop in the dry spells?

How desperate would you need to be to queue for, say 40 min, in the rain?

Will good humour be maintained or might this be the tipping point?

I suspect the people just popping for their 2 cucumbers will go without and the queues will be shorter

Notso · 28/04/2020 07:33

I've only queued once for the supermarket since the restrictions started. Since then I've been going at quiet times.

I think more places will start doing a click and collect system too. I know Morrison's are and locally lots of previously closed businesses are starting to open for delivery or with time slots for collections.

I also hate how the weather affects people's moods so much ; we need rain in order to have water! Last thing we need is a drought.
( apart from those flooded out this year I can see why they hate it!)

As for queues , it will be rubbish but a lot of big stores have under cover bits and they have calmed down a lot lately so the waits not not be as bad.
The raincoats and brollies will have to be dug out too.

I work (or should I say used to work, until
Lockdown is eased) outside most of hen days every single day. It rains, I wear waterproofs. Sometimes I get a bit wet. No harm done, except to older or unwell people who I really really hope we will be able to feed without them risking the shops anyway.

I would much rather stand outside in the open air getting wet and cold than undercover or snaking round an indoor cafe.

MooseBreath · 28/04/2020 09:28

In Toronto, they've been queuing for the past 4 weeks in the snow and temperatures as low as -8. It's only just become warmer.
We can handle a bit of rain!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 28/04/2020 09:35

I was planning on doing the weekly shop today but realised that I would have to queue in the rain.
So I went at 6.30 yesterday evening and there was no queue!
Got everything apart from baking powder (which I expected) and tinned coconut milk (which was odd)

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 28/04/2020 09:47

We drove past the asda queue last Friday afternoon

It was the biggest ive seen there so far, had to be at least 40 minutes, 30 of those in the open

I think Friday afternoon must be a bad time to be fair cos B&M and Lidl had queues as well

InfiniteCurve · 28/04/2020 09:57

Do people not go out in the rain?
It's really not difficult,if you are going out to shop and its raining you either decide to get wet or you put on a coat with a hood and/or take an umbrella.
And when you get home you hang your dripping coat on the door and mutter cheerfully at your family along the lines of " well,it's really wet out there,I'm soaked....still,we need the rain, don't we?"
Easy peasy.

I have no objection to queuing in the rain.

Having said that I won't be going until Thursday and have no idea what the weather forecast is.

I was talking to one of the young men supervising the car park when I was there last time, about them standing about in all weathers and he said that they had to stand out when it was hailing, as did the queue, so I can't imagine a bit of rain is going to change anything.

SunnyStroll · 28/04/2020 11:22

FWIW I run in the rain regularly. I thoroughly enjoy a day's hike, suitably dressed, in the rain, I often work outdoors in the rain. Even I would avoid standing still for 40 min in the rain if I could.

Maybe they should hand these out in the car park

Umbrella needed - I just would never expect any sort of temporary shelter to be built.

RingPiece · 28/04/2020 15:12

I'm amazed at how often some of my oldest and closest friends cancel plans at the merest hint of rain. It's just weather, and like putting on sunglasses on a sunny day, you just grab an umbrella.

Unworthie · 28/04/2020 15:19

I have to walk about 2 miles to get to the shop, I walk a lot in general as don't drive so the waterproofs will come back out.
I'll still need to go so I'll just get wet Grin

Standrewsschool · 28/04/2020 20:25

“ I can't say I'm a huge fan of umbrellas either. Just get a bloody water proof coat and save poking everyone elses eyes out ffs!”

I have found my people!

FuzzyPuffling · 28/04/2020 20:29

Hurrah to all those who love the Bude Tunnel.
Exactly what rainy queues need.

borntobequiet · 28/04/2020 20:40

I’ve not had to queue. I’ve been to Aldi in the early afternoon, Morrison’s in the late afternoon and Asda at 8:30 pm.

EBearhug · 28/04/2020 22:18

I hate umbrellas. I have a good waterproof coat, but there's a big difference between walking in the rain and just standing in the rain. I've had to queue every time I have been to the supermarket, whichever I go to, and as I am still working, I am limited in the times I can go.

georgialondon · 28/04/2020 22:30

Don't you just get your brolly out?

WhispersOfWickedness · 28/04/2020 22:45

I'm happy to report that I tested it out this afternoon, and there was no queue Grin

SleepingStandingUp · 28/04/2020 22:53

God help the dick that tries to queue jump in torrential rain.

Thankfully we queue in the indoor carpark

SleepingStandingUp · 28/04/2020 22:56

We're 6ft apart, how big is your umbrella

MARMITEcheese2020 · 28/04/2020 23:36

Get wet
I had to go to supermarket today for the chemist. I purposely went in the rain I walked straight in, no queue not one at chemist or till was lovely. Altho the contanstly not having to try to avoid people meant It was a little too easy to browse and buy too much junk and treats. Prob shouknt have gone hungry either

JustAnotherPoster00 · 29/04/2020 08:43

Some people really are revelling in the drama of it all, not to mention using every opportunity for a bit of Tory bashing

Of course the under funding of the care sector and the NHS has nothing to do with them, the lack of PPE, still nothing to do with them.

Hmm
Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 29/04/2020 08:49

Do some people not understand that all weather is not equal?
I live in Lancashire, it rains a lot, admittedly not for the past few weeks but that's really unusual.
We might not melt but you can get absolutely bloody soaked because we have what my Northern friends would describe as proper rain.
