IF it's true... how will pubs survive this?

If they remain closed for the entire year how on earth will they not fold altogether? Granted when they do eventually open they'll be rammed with punters (if allowed to be) but I really feel for people who are in this business. If cafes start to open surely they should open pubs too, with restrictions? No more than two people standing at the bar or groups of 3 only etc...

Flax, I think we’re talking a bit cross purposes here

I’m saying it’s sad that small local pubs will go under, you’re saying “survival of the fittest”.

Which is true, but my point is, it’s a shame, that’s all. I think other posters might be thinking the same as I am.

Funny where survival of the fittest is and isn’t okay....

No what's survival of the fittest is having no lockdown and allowing 100,000's, possibly millions, of the most vulnerable members of our society die of this hideous disease. Not only that, but die at home without palliative care and possibly completely alone, because our health service would be in a state of collapse

That's kind of what's been happening anyway, especially in care homes.

You are talking about survival of the fittest, in a business sense. Some business models can't be adapted, and these will simply go under. And who will have the money to restart when this is over? Big chains like Wetherspoons. It will be sad.
My DH is also in an industry that is completely shut down by this, live events. I seriously don't see how they're going to adapt during social distancing. Some things just aren't profitable, easier to just shut the doors.

Our local micropub is open for takeaways. DH and I are making a point of buying from there regularly (whilst on our government sanctioned walk for exercise 😉) because it would be awful for the owner and the community if he went under.....

Perhaps the people working in them can obtain jobs wherein they contribute something worthwhile to society.

Pubs and bars can easily social distance with staff on the door, tables further apart and table service.

Not the pub I usually go to. They could easily social distance, but there would only be room for about six customers in the pub.

Sadly pubs and restaurants are screwed for the foreseeable. I see a lot of house parties where you socialise with family and friends you know and can trust and lots of stop-overs.

Oh can we? Who decides what's worthwhile? You? Can I have a list so I know what I'm supposed to be looking for?

We have pubs dating back to the 12th century. They will still be trading in hundreds of years to come I'm sure.

Also even if pubs etc can manage social distancing , what about hygiene standards, getting food and drinks to tables etc? Just thinking about how frequently I ( used to) get served a drink in a glass that has lipstick on the rim...how can we be sure that increased hygiene processes have been implemented? By the way I don’t mean to imply that happens in all pubs but surprisingly often.

Even as things became really serious and we were getting closer to lockdown so many people were like "fuck that, no ones gonna stop me from meeting my mates and having a drink". hmmWhat little social distancing was in place at the start of a session soon went straight out the window after a few pints.

As were pub landlords. At the start of the week before lockdown, pubs etc were "advised" to close - some did. Our village pub landlord was all over social media telling everyone he was staying open as normal, and took a lot of complaints from people telling him it was unwise. But he carried on opening anyway. Until Friday when pubs were told to close in the afternoon briefing. Even then, that evening, he was all over social media saying he was still open as usual until closing time. Until the police gave him a visit and closed it down mid evening! Someone like that will open as soon as possible and flout social distancing rules.

The hysteria around pubs being shut down the rest of the year is pretty boring now

99% of pubs serve food - in fact that is most pubs main income therefore they can argue that they are restaurants by serving food. So once restaurants reopen pubs will follow

Just like restaurants will open with more spaces between seats then so will pubs

The only likely difference will be there that there will no no stand up drinking allowed eg at the bar. Youll have to be sat at a table If you want to drink. This will reduce numbers but help maintain distancing

Most big pub companies have apps where you can order and pay on your phone so no cash transactions and will limit interaction with staff

Pretty simple really

“99% of pubs serve food“

Unless you mean crisps, none of the pubs in the town I live in do...

@tabulahrasa

But I'm sure they have tables and chairs so as long as you are sat at a table drinking and not milling around you'd be obeying social distancing

They'll need to be big tables to give 2 metre distance if you're not sitting with members of your household.

The tables will also have to be 5 metres apart to allow for someone to walk between them and still leave 2 metre clearance between them and each table.

The gap behind the bar is rarely more than 2 metres so bar staff won't be able to squeeze past eachother and have to stay at their own end of the bar.

Are the kitchens large enough to allow 2 metres between staff?

Are the toilets big enough to allow 2 metres or will staff have to be engaged outside each loo to ensure one person at a time?

As from the above, most pubs won't be opening until the social distance measures have been removed, i.e. when the vaccine arrives.

My pub of choice has 5 small tables each with five chairs. No food other than crisps and some amazing pork scratchings! On a usual evening, every chair is taken. You can’t stand at “the bar” which is big enough for one person to buy their beer which is drawn straight from the cask in the chiller room. Usually a choice of two ales and two ciders. That’s the sort of business which is very likely to go under without community support.

Half of them would fit 2 tables in if people have to be 2m apart.

In fact I can think of maybe 1 pub within 3 towns that would be big enough to actually have enough customers to stay profitable.

We have 2 village pubs, both shut when lockdown was announced. One has since reopened weekend evenings only for takeaway food and bottled drinks. I was chatting to the landlord when I picked up a takeaway and he said they can't last beyond September and know a lot of pub landlords who have already surrendered their keys.

The head of the company I work for was on tv earlier saying how social distancing in pubs would make it soulless. Also profits would be down 80 %.
I think many will go under and possibly reopen in the future if/when a vaccine is found. The whole point of a pub is the cos y intimate nature and for business es to create a fun atmosphere while making maximum profits.
Hard for me to believe I will have a job to go back too.
