Gov key worker tests

Does anyone know if the Coronavirus tests only work if you have symptoms currently? I am a key worker & think I had it a few weeks ago but does this test tell you if you’ve had it before ? Or just confirm if you’ve currently got Coronavirus ?

The swab tests will only show a positive result if you have an active case of the virus, it’s the antibody test that you would need but that isn’t available yet.

dementedpixie · 24/04/2020 10:58

It just confirms if you currently have it. There is no test to show whether you've had it in the past

Coronaloner · 24/04/2020 11:03

Thanks that is ridiculous any news on when the antibody tests will be available& if they’ll roll them out the same way as there doing these ?

OP posts:
pocketem · 24/04/2020 11:04

that is ridiculous
No it's not

any news on when the antibody tests will be available
Yes it's been in the news every day, and discussed on Mumsnet extensively too

dementedpixie · 24/04/2020 11:11

How is it ridiculous?
It is a new virus, they need to devise tests from scratch and that takes time

Coronaloner · 24/04/2020 11:41

Bloody hell no need to be so rude !! Why does everyone love an argument on here Jesus. I personally think it’s ridiculous how long testing is taking and the empty promises the government keeps making that’s my opinion is that ok? Also perhaps I’ve missed the posts on mumsnet where they’ve extensively discussed it and I’ve avoided watching the news too much actually is that ok?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 24/04/2020 11:48

No one was rude except you

Mumski45 · 24/04/2020 11:56

You were the one who is rude. Have you any idea whatsoever how difficult it is to get these tests developed, tested and manufactured ready for people to use for a virus that didn't exist a few months ago. If you could do a better job then why not volunteer your expert services to the appropriate scientists. No, I thought not.

Coronaloner · 24/04/2020 12:33

Do not try to make out you weren’t rude both of you were. Don’t try to belittle me everyone is aloud an opinion

You're the one that swore.

Mumski45 · 24/04/2020 13:54

Of course you are entitled to an opinion but if you can't back it up with logical arguments then your opinions won't be taken seriously.

Coronaloner · 24/04/2020 14:34

My Uncle has had the test as he works for the NHS and been told he has had it. He’s not sure which test he got given but sounds like the antibody test (which I didn’t think was ready yet). We are in NI.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 24/04/2020 17:55

You can’t come on and ask quite frankly an idiotic question when it can be easily be found by google and a search/advance search on MN even in open topics Confused

Then state the replies to you are ridiculous Hmm and rude due to your own lack of research and by your own admission Without watching the daily conferences Hmm

Testing at this moment if found positive is hugely beneficial in key workers going back to employment as current research has found those who have/had Covid build anti-bodies which can then be helped in helping the science behind antibody testing, which if going by the current science we are close I allowing this research to be manufactured and be tested publicly.

So basically don’t ask a silly question with little no research and then be rude without then calling you out on it.

Just because you claim it’s rude because you haven’t gotten the answer you want doesn’t make it so Hmm

Bounceyflouncey · 24/04/2020 17:57

Wow some over the top replies. OP, we are ridiculously behind on testing, so no, these aren't the antibody tests, they will probably surface in about a decade. Even if you have symptoms now the chances of getting a test slot or home kit are ridiculously low because although we have had as much time as other countries to prepare, we are woefully short of the capabilities we need.

Coronaloner · 26/04/2020 10:15

Oh goodness me I’m so sorry @HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend please forgive me for not knowing there’s an advance search bar on mumsnet we’re clearly not all as clever as you. How is it an idiotic question ???? I’m asking as I thought someone might know some info and mumsnet is for discussing things.

I didn’t say anyone’s reply was ridiculous i meant the testing situation is ridiculous. Our country is shit at testing and we are massively behind. As you can see another poster agrees with me. I stopped watching too many daily conferences and limited news as it was affecting my mental health so I am sooooo sorry about that.

My question is not silly your just clearly an uptight catty person browsing mumsnet to attack people and have an argument. We don’t all sit there researching Coronavirus all day. I didn’t realise I was only allowed to ask certain questions but thank you so much for letting me know.
