Social distancing in winter

FreierFall · 24/04/2020 10:40

Wait outside in the rain for hours to get food, bank, pharmacy, clothes, hardware etc etc. It ain't gonna happen. Do they expect the elderly to stand in freezing rain?

I'm fucking sick of itSad

I'm sick of it too op. One thing I would suggest is invest in a good winter jacket and wellies

Hippofrog · 24/04/2020 11:04

What’s the alternative?

squashyhat · 24/04/2020 11:04

FFS it's only April. Get a grip.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 24/04/2020 11:16

I hope what you are sick of is the virus (not literally) as it’s that, not the health advisors or government, to blame here.

LilacTree1 · 24/04/2020 11:43

OP they expect the elderly to stay at home for a year, which is worse.

FreierFall · 24/04/2020 11:44

@squashyhat no I won't "get a grip".

You kind of do need to get a grip. It's not as if the government have gone you know what would be so funny social distancing. Even funnier let's watch the peasants queue for their food. Needs must. Invest in a winter coat and wellies. Though it's only April 🤦🏻‍♀️

ParkheadParadise · 24/04/2020 11:50

I waited for 1 hr in a queue at tesco this morning. Got in done my shopping when I came out I'd forgot to get teabags and bloody sugar.
No way was I going back in, I seem to attract all the nutjobs in the queue who want to chat a load of pish to me.

LilacTree1 · 24/04/2020 11:50

“ Even funnier let's watch the peasants queue for their food”

Um, I would not put them past that.

LilacTree1 · 24/04/2020 11:50

The only people who will do well out of this will be the very wealthy.

ilovecakeandwine · 24/04/2020 11:53

It's only April good god I'm not even thinking that far ahead yet .
I know it was said that social distancing will be for some time but that does not mean as we know it today .
I admit it's getting tiresome queuing but it's the situation at the minute but things will change .
Can you imagine in January that this would be our life? , no so think another 4 months from now things could be very different.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 24/04/2020 11:53

The things people worry about, the mind boggles

Well yes if the virus hasn’t claimed you by the winter you might have to queue in rain or the cold 😱

If you go by car they may bring in a sit and queue in your car type system or some such

LilacTree1 · 24/04/2020 11:55

“ The things people worry about, the mind boggles ”

Quite. I never thought I’d see this reaction to a virus that wouldn’t even kill 0.5% of the population.

It’s good to think in advance OP. I will need to make sure mum is all prepared for that kind of thing, though she’d rather die of the virus or anything else than see this.

BarefootHippieChick · 24/04/2020 11:56

Some supermarkets are telling people to wait in cars and helping them park in a kind of queueing system.
Personally I think this would be a lot easier in winter. It's much more preferable to be stuck indoors when it's cold and wet and curtains are being closed by 4pm. The constant warm sunny weather just makes people want to go out and do stuff.

PrimalLass · 24/04/2020 12:02

Who is it you are angry at here? Winter is months away.

enjoyingSun · 24/04/2020 12:04

A lot of those things can be done on-line - my 70 and 77 year old parents are managing to get things like food, prescriptions hardware delivered - they phone bank but don't internet bank.

I would like dentist and orthodontist back up and running though - but clearly there need to be as safe as possible for the dentists.

I spend fair bit of time wairing around in winter weather and it does get old fast - but hopefully they'll have time to refine and tweak the distancing systems.

BarefootHippieChick · 24/04/2020 12:15

enjoyingsun dentists could certainly have less appointments in a day so there's never many people in a waiting room at one time, but still running a risk having to get so close to patients.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/04/2020 12:22

By then there will be online shopping for everyone - surely they're all recruiting and buying vans

enjoyingSun · 24/04/2020 12:23

I think the denstist would need proper PPE equipment - if not for all then for some treatments.

I image it's simlar for orthodotist though DD1's orthodontist has young children who'd be home at the minute as well.

I image at some point though they'd have to start seeing people again as people like DD1 are mid treatment and they are private business so they'll have no income coming in at the minute with no-one being seen - but they'll have to manage risks for patients and themselves at some point.

Hagisonthehill · 24/04/2020 12:23

Cast your mind back to the beginning of the month when we had hard frosts and a bitingly cold wind.
On line shopping is still available.

Nitpickpicnic · 24/04/2020 12:25

Well there are plenty of MNers currently living in winter conditions right now, and for the next months. Not everyone lives in the UK.

pocketem · 24/04/2020 12:26

Do they expect the elderly to stand in freezing rain
No, they are supposed to stay at home

shinynewapple2020 · 24/04/2020 12:26

I imagine that if this is all continuing by winter time then home delivery slots will have increased. Pharmacies will normally deliver, you can buy homer hardware and clothing online for delivery and there is very little need for cash now.

Or do you live somewhere where deliveries aren't possible?

Obviously some people will chose to go out to shops rather than have delivery but for a lot of things that will be their choice
