Is having the test really unpleasant?

Just that.
I have heard it's not very nice, they have to stick the swab quite far in. I'm eligible to have a test but am not very good with medical procedures. The nurse I spoke to said it's very straight forward but I want to be prepared for what it's actually like

Do you need the test? Being eligible and actually requiring a test are not the same.

LeSquigh · 24/04/2020 08:17

You do it yourself in your car but you do have to stick it to the back of your throat and then up your nose as far as you can go. But you are in control of it if that helps.

midgebabe · 24/04/2020 08:19

I am sure I have had similar swabs in the past, not had this one

Does make me gag response but it's in , out and on your way. Nothing to worry about, not painful just uncomfortable

EricaNernie · 24/04/2020 08:20

is there a chance of catching the virus when you go for your test?

pocketem · 24/04/2020 08:20

It has to reach the nasopharynx. Uncomfortable but not painful

Some say uncomfortable, others say slightly painful but it doesn't last long.

My 15 year old son was tested. Quick swab around the nouth and nose, took less than 60 seconds, zero discomfort.

SockQueen · 24/04/2020 08:50

I had it done by occupational health at work. They were very thorough (as they should be!) The throat swab made me gag and the nose one made my eyes water but it's over pretty quickly.

Hippywannabe · 24/04/2020 08:53

I don't thinknit should be done by ourselves as I think the risk of us not doing it properly is huge which will lead to incorrect results.

Letseatgrandma · 24/04/2020 09:00

I'm eligible to have a test

What exactly does that mean?

You have a persistent cough and a temperature?

You have a cough and temperature and are an essential worker?

acatcalledjohn · 24/04/2020 09:00

Oh fuck that for a game of soldiers! Shock

It's a good job I'm not a likely candidate for this test.

swapsicles · 24/04/2020 09:03

This worries me a bit if I have to have the test as everytime I'm at the dentist I apologise frequent as I gag a lot, hate it and much as I try I can't help it.
Think I may have had it anyway but no way of knowing currently

Noworrieshere · 24/04/2020 09:15

I'm eligible to have a test

Bad choice of words, I don't know. Household member is an NHS worker with a cough. So he will be tested, I can also be tested. I don't have any symptoms though so I think I wait till be gets his results. I'm not entirely sure. He's going for his test this morning.

Those photos look terrifying. Surely they can't expect you to do that yourself?

I’ve had it . It was uncomfortable. Not so much painful but wouldn’t be in a hurry to have another

Hyrana · 24/04/2020 09:31

Same swapsicles as I get older my gag reflex increases and it was never great anyway. I do a lot of apologising to my dentist as well Grin

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 24/04/2020 09:54

I had to have this done when I went into hospital a couple of years back. A nurse supervised me doing it to myself. It had to reach a certain marker on the stick.

It feels a bit unnatural and unpleasant...made my eyes water. But it wasn’t painful.

ChestyNut · 24/04/2020 16:19

Had one this morning.....I think she swabbed my brain in went in so far Grin
Made me retch and my eyes water.
Can’t see people who are getting home testing kits swabbing deep enough.
