Was in there yesterday and there was nothing advertising this was the case and i didnt know until i got my purse out at the till. Seen some tweets from other areas who also had the same experience.

Cash can still be used for self serve tills.

Great idea, the staff don't want to be handling dirty cash

Deelish75 · 22/04/2020 16:24

I’ve not received an email from them about so wander if it’s an individual store policy. But as PP said it’s good for staff not handling cash.

HeIenaDove · 22/04/2020 16:28

Yes but they should advertise the fact.

"Sainsburys refusing cash payment at tills. We went to Sainsburys early to get old mans shopping & shopping for the old lady next door. The old man ahead of new at the tills, well in his 80s & alone didn't possess any bank cards, only cash. The cashier explained he couldn't take cash, only card payments.Poor confused man was in tears His shopping came to £9.50 & he had a £10 note in his hand. Under the watchful eye of 3 store assistants I offered to pay for his shopping on my card I took the £10 off him ,gave him50p change & explained what I was doing.I gave him the receipt to show his shopping was paid for.He left the till with his shopping, totally confused and stood by the window till I had paid for other shopping.I then had to forfeit our angel slices as I had 3 bakery items and Doris next door needed bread and tea cakes.!!! I approached the old man who seemed to be waiting for me & assured him his shopping was paid for He told me lived alone with no family and doesn't have a bank account. How many of the older generation are going to really struggle in the present situation with no one to help or understand them??? Feeling sad"

Really? How does he receive his pension?
I work for a building society. Even homeless people have bank accounts.

Why the need to share the 'good deeds' if they have actually been carried out? I call bullshit

Yes but they should advertise the fact

They must have somewhere because some people know this information. I knew.

Maxineputyourredshoeson · 22/04/2020 16:43

But they are advertising it on their website and I’m not 100% sure but I’ve seen it elsewhere too - I haven’t been to a supermarket for a long, long time due to my illnesses so I’m not sure about in store.

They might have to stop

In reality, local Aldi take cash because they’re aware they’re being hard on the hardest hit if they don’t.

LilacTree1 · 22/04/2020 16:46

I mean, they might have to stop saying card only.

SeriouslyRetro · 22/04/2020 16:46

The trouble is if you’ve only got cash, and the banks are such reduced hours now, you can’t convert it to your card.

It’s mostly the elderly people who will be disadvantaged.

HeIenaDove · 22/04/2020 16:47

Yes the older pensioners should have checked that on their smartphones before going in store. Hmm

OP posts:
SeriouslyRetro · 22/04/2020 16:48

MrsJosh A lot of people have a very basic post office account which credits their pension and they withdraw cash sums. There’s no bank card they can use. Do you ever see the queue of elderly people waiting for the post office to open in the morning?

LeSquigh · 22/04/2020 16:52

In my local Sainsburys there are signs up asking you to use the self service if you need to use cash - however in practice they are taking cash at all tills if that is all you have.

SeriouslyRetro · 22/04/2020 16:55

I understand why they don’t want to handle cash. But I also think the people who are most likely to want to pay with cash are the people who are least likely to cope with a self service till.

Could they wear gloves?

Maxineputyourredshoeson · 22/04/2020 16:56

@HeIenaDove absolutely no reason to be rude! You stated that Sainsburys should be advertising, I simply stated that they are actually advertising on the website. As others have stated they also have signs in store asking people to use self service tills if they have cash. And just because somebody is a pensioner didn’t mean they can’t use a smartphone.... Hmm

LilacTree1 · 22/04/2020 16:57

Helena wasn’t rude....?

HeIenaDove · 22/04/2020 16:59

Im aware that age on its own doesnt prevent use of a smartphone but as a group they are less likely to.

OP posts:
HeIenaDove · 22/04/2020 17:01

Err no one else has stated on this thread that there are signs in store

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 22/04/2020 17:05

Staff could have taken him to a self service till and shown him his to use it if cash could be used at them? It wasn’t as if there was no means for him to pay by cash at all.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 22/04/2020 17:06

OP, do you want to consider getting MN to change that title to “Sainsbury’s not card only in store”, or “Sainsbury’s card only at manned tills, cash still absolutely fine at self-service checkouts”?

Sparklingbrook · 22/04/2020 17:07

Yes the thread title is a bit alarmist and misleading.
