Was in there yesterday and there was nothing advertising this was the case and i didnt know until i got my purse out at the till. Seen some tweets from other areas who also had the same experience.

Cash can still be used for self serve tills.

Great idea to go cashless. There's really no excuse even for someone in their 80s not to be able to use a debit card, they've been around for decades now and with contactless payments it's as simple as touching the card to the reader.

HeIenaDove · 23/04/2020 21:44

Thats really not a good look @pocketem

One minute they are a vulnerable group. The next its Fuck it They will have to learn.

My parents are in their 80s. They have got to grips with a new Iphone so they can do Facetime with the family during lockdown. They also use internet banking and credit/debit cards. Don't write the elderly off as unable to learn how to do things a bit differently.

HeIenaDove · 23/04/2020 21:59

DH is 70 and very techy minded.

My 84 year old parents Not a chance

Cant see them spending £££££££ on an iphone or equivilant that they wouldnt be able to use

DS2 (18) was very patient and talked them through setting it up and they got the hang of it really quickly. They are not techy people but I think they realised if they wanted to keep in touch and 'see' family it would be good.

Ilikewinter · 23/04/2020 22:05

I watched customer use a cash machine then come into my shop, signs up requesting people pay by card. She told me she didnt have a card.
Another customer told me she didnt want to use her card as she had a pocket full of change she wants to get rid of.

Sparklingbrook · 23/04/2020 22:09

I remember this from back in March. A real sign that an Iceland store had to put up. The mind boggles.

The majority of pensioners have been sent letters explaining that they need to open a bank account and that the post office accounts are being withdrawn. This has been happening for years now and most people should have moved across. Most banks also offer a Basic account to everyone regardless of their situation.

I think it’s fair that supermarket workers should be able to do everything they can to protect themselves.

HeIenaDove · 23/04/2020 22:47

My cash has never been in any of those places. Only ever in my purse.

Speaking of using the mouth the person queuing in front of me had her shopping list in her mouth. She then took it out of her mouth touched the trolley handle with the same hand THEN changed her mind about going into the store and i was next in line. So i had to take the trolley (you have to put a pound in the slot to even move it so no option to not touch it) so you can take the one behind it.............oh wait no you cant Because you have already put your pound in the first one

I mentioned her saliva was now on the trolley handle to the security guard
who looked at me like id grown another head.

This was queuing outside Sainsburys.

I got into the store and asked at customer service for trolley handle spray cleaner and got it. This was 3 weeks ago.

So its not just cash yet that is singled out.

NoWordForFluffy · 23/04/2020 22:56

I take my own wipes to the supermarket so I know the trolley is cleaned thoroughly.

HeIenaDove · 23/04/2020 23:03

I now do the main shop at Tesco. Trolley cleaner and hand sanitiser is available on the door though i always have the latter with me.

I will not shop at Sainsbury's while this policy is in place. They are the only store to implement this, every other supermarket is still accepting cash. Cash has been with is for centuries and has not managed to wipe out the population. By the way, my octagenarion parents do not have smart phones or access to internet,so would not have known about this policy. I don't intend to give my custom to any business that insists on card only, I think we will live to regret it if we assist the speed up of a cashless society. WHO has revised their advice on risks associated with the use of cash

Oysterbabe · 13/06/2020 08:01

This will all be so much easier when we can pay by retina scan or a microchip under our skin.

Burgundy1844 · 13/06/2020 08:05

@oysterbabe that would save having to key in a pin on the pin pads which can be disgusting 🤢

PrivateD00r · 13/06/2020 08:17

Anything that makes staff feel safer is important, they deserve to feel safe in their work. Its a bit silly to say that is no different to handling groceries - much less likely that someone has stuff the groceries in their mouth. Plus its likely that money has been handled many more times than groceries and its been in someones home.

I don't think sainsburys have done anything wrong, they have advertised this policy and have an alternative; self scan. There are staff around to help with that. Obviously we all have a responsibility too to help out anyone that we see struggling. I really cannot get excited about this.

As for your VISA bill? I don't know anyone who pays that in person Confused Where are you getting all this cash from? It is very unusual for someone of your age op to not be able to manage with a bank account (I am making assumptions on your age from your parents age...). You often talk about receiving benefits, do you really receive them in cash?

PrivateD00r · 13/06/2020 08:19

And you are able to negotiate twitter but cannot work a computer to pay bills or open a suitable bank account?

StealthPolarBear · 13/06/2020 08:22

My grandad, who died recently at the age of 87 dealt only in cash. He lived independently until his 80s and worked until his late sixties and it was only when I asked my mum what she meant by having to "go to get his pension" that I found out. I was really surprised but I suppose the point I'm making is it must be fairly common.

Burgundy1844 · 13/06/2020 08:32

My BIL only uses cash and he’s late 50s. I think it’s force of habit for a lot of people.

cologne4711 · 13/06/2020 08:40

Some people use cash because they find it easier to budget that way.

I stupidly took £40 out just before lockdown and it has been in my purse ever since. I wonder if I will ever get a chance to spend it or I need to take it back to the bank :)

lljkk · 13/06/2020 08:50

I don't watch TV (or visit Sainsb website) so I didn't know either, OP.
I prefer cash but kind of assume that it may not be accepted anywhere right now.

Agree it's very funny I can paw & breathe all over my shopping before loading on conveyor built. Till person handling those items is fine but a tenner is biohazard.

Hmmph · 13/06/2020 08:53

My Mum can only use cash. She has a bank account, but goes to the counter to get cash out. She has a card, but won’t use it.

She also won’t have a smart phone or use the Internet. It’s not uncommon. We shouldn’t be discriminating against the elderly.

Pipandmum · 13/06/2020 08:58

Well it's an odd policy as I got given cash back last week at Sainsbury's.

SpockSmashesScissors · 13/06/2020 09:14

This is not Sainsbury's policy, they are to encourage customers with cash to use self serve, but all till points should still be accepting cash. Individual stores are interpreting this wrongly.

Jessie101 · 13/06/2020 09:17

PrivateDOOr I think many, like me, do not trust online banking enough, plus, people like my parents do not have internet access, even on a phone. I have a Post Office account because, being disabled, my local branch is easier to access than any local bank in my area. Plus o want to do all I can to support Post Offices staying open. Yes people have been written to, telling they need to open a bank account, it's written in a way that suggests you have to but it's not obligatory (yet). Just wait until no cash anywhere and the system crashes, as it does. Cash will only disappear if we let it

Jessie101 · 13/06/2020 09:22

Backseatknitter, they have but it's not obligatory
