Was in there yesterday and there was nothing advertising this was the case and i didnt know until i got my purse out at the till. Seen some tweets from other areas who also had the same experience.

Cash can still be used for self serve tills.

@LeSquigh above stated that their store has signs. I’ve just asked my DH and our local store also has signs up (he does all of the food shopping).

I apologise if your intent wasn’t rude but I guess I’m a bit pissed off with the whole situation, although my frustration is not warranted on this post Flowers

Roomba · 22/04/2020 17:10

I know several people personally who do have a post office account now, to receive their pension/benefits. But that only comes with a cash card, not a debit card. Many people don't have debit cards and will really struggle with this rule - and they are the kind of vulnerable people who are struggling full stop with everything right now anyway.

I can absolutely see why staff don't want to be touching cash though. Can't they allow cash just at the self checkouts, where staff don't have to touch it all day long?

Roomba · 22/04/2020 17:11

Oh ffs, should have read the whole bloody thread Hmm

LilyE1234 · 22/04/2020 17:13

It was on the tv advert..

Beautiful3 · 22/04/2020 17:14

My parents dont have a credit card either. I feel sorry for the older generation. If staff are wearing gloves then why not take cash?

Allington · 22/04/2020 17:14

They do allow cash at the self checkouts.

I have seen staff at our local Sainsburys talking people who are a bit confused through it all, including patiently saying 'now scan the next item' 20 times as they go slowly though their basket.

Alarmist and inaccurate thread title.

Sparklingbrook · 22/04/2020 17:17

It’s not just staff taking the money that they want to avoid , staff have to empty the tills and cash up etc. Lots of handling of filthy notes and coins.
Plus handling people’s food and then money with gloves on isn’t hygienic.

NoWordForFluffy · 22/04/2020 17:18

I've had an email about it, it's on the website and there are signs in my local store. The staff are also checking how people are paying when they go to the tills too. I'm not sure there's much else they can do.

And you CAN pay with cash, so saying you can't at all in your title is factually incorrect.

HeIenaDove · 22/04/2020 17:35

Ive asked for thread title to be changed.

My local store has signs up. They are hand written but they were there. Plus I've seen it on social media and the news.

HeIenaDove · 23/04/2020 01:33

TV advert is still saying Pay by card if you can.

OP posts:
TimeForChange123 · 23/04/2020 05:03

Yay Helena, another campaign!

mamanyoga · 23/04/2020 05:11

They can pay at the self check out, as another poster has mentioned.

OldWomanThyme · 23/04/2020 05:22

It's been the case at my local Sainsbury's since lockdown began.
When queuing outside the staff member reminds everyone that its cash at self service only and if anyone needs help there is a member of staff to help.
Every time I've been in (I shop for myself and an elderly relative) it's made clear at the entrance. I think it's a good idea.

JustVisiting9 · 23/04/2020 06:20

I find it odd that they are happy to handle your shopping, which you have touched, other customers may have touched and the shelf stackers will have touched. But they won't handle cash.

I understand that they wish to minimise it, but if they are wearing their gloves and using sanitizer, does handling cash present a significant incremental risk compared to handling all the groceries?

My local doctors surgery dispense prescriptions because there is no pharmacy nearby. A few weeks ago their card machine was out of order, so they were only able to take cash payments. I am sure a doctors surgery/pharmacist would understand the risk better than a supermarket, and wouldn't have done this if it was especially dangerous.

NoWordForFluffy · 23/04/2020 07:06

TV advert is still saying Pay by card if you can.

What part of this is misleading? They would prefer you to pay by card but you can pay with cash at the self service tills (if available).

Nobody is being stopped from shopping at Sainsbury's.

Gfplux · 23/04/2020 07:26

Good safety measure to use contactless card only.

Bad support for jobs to use self service tills.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 23/04/2020 08:43

The staff in Sainsbury’s aren’t being given gloves or hand sanitiser ... at least at my local one they aren’t as they’ve run out. Not that I think gloves are any use but they should have sanitiser

HeIenaDove · 23/04/2020 14:01

Its not a bloody campaign Its a thread to let people know because the details on the TV advert are misleading

Tesco also say pay by card if you can but they are accepting cash at manned tills.

Visa bill came today Which means ANOTHER trip into town to pay it in at the bank. When people are being told to limit trips out.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/04/2020 14:22

Visa bill came today Which means ANOTHER trip into town to pay it in at the bank. When people are being told to limit trips out.

Not sure what you want done about that?

Not pay the bill?

Sparklingbrook · 23/04/2020 14:27

Can you not do internet banking or banking app to pay the bill?

LastTrainEast · 23/04/2020 14:41

Shops should all go card only. What's the point of getting cash from an ATM to hand to someone in a shop?

NoWordForFluffy · 23/04/2020 15:02

You can ring up and pay a card. Absolutely no need to go into town to do it.

And the advert isn't misleading. It says pay by card if you can. They ARE accepting cash, so I'm not sure what your point is? You appear to have a bee in your bonnet about something you've misinterpreted.

Icandada · 23/04/2020 15:13

If you don’t want to go out to pay the visa bill, and don’t want to (or can’t) do it by telephone, app, online or set up a direct debit, just don’t use the card then there will nothing to pay.
