Have a read of this, a large and mainstream German publication, this rhetoric would have seemed unthinkable only a couple of months ago.

China is a police state that has all its citizens under extreme surveillance and persecutes dissidents and minorities. He's only saying what is obvious.

The anti China rhetoric will keep growing. Countries and leaders are pissed off with them.

I don't disagree with him but really, really not looking forward to finding out how this dispute will be finally settled. China's been gearing up for a Pacific Ocean war for some time.

Can you imagine if a SARS type virus had started in the US or UK it would take months to pick up on unusual pneumonia cases.

It reads a bit better in the original German, but I must admit he's a very brave man. It is quite definitely their fault - not so much the origin of the virus but their obfuscation. Tbh I also blame the WHO for just accepting their statements in mid Jan about no human - human transmission, but I guess we don't actually know what diplomatic efforts went on behind the scenes. They've now dated the first case in Wuhan to mid November so it's hard to see why China didn't do much more. The reason is that they don't really care about their people, they don't care about safety standards or quality in any of their products. I have to say I am fed up of all this China bashing! What exactly have they done wrong (that hasn't been done two months later by every western government)? Even assuming that they have been lying at every corner: on 23 January they have taken the unprecendented measure of locking down a region with the population of the UK much more severely than any lockdown since in Europe, greatly harming their own people and economy. The scale of that measure took the WHO by surprise. That alone must have been enough warning to everybody that something out of the normal was afoot. We had two months since then (that the Chinese move has bought us) that were wasted! No, the current situation is entirely the fault of our own governments for not heeding the warnings coming from China, for arrogance, for thinking this does not affect western people and after Italy had got it, for some strange reason thinking that English speaking people will not get it...

I agree with @PestymcPestFace and @dadandtwokids - the China-bashing is just idiocy. We have no idea exactly where or when the virus began. It was noticed in Wuhan but could have come from anywhere. It's not 'Chinese' and it's not China's intention that it spread globally. You can't harness disease in that way. (And if it were germ warfare, surely it would covertly be placed in other countries first.) I am very worried by the speed at which a global crisis becomes an excuse for racism.

ellamwood - It is not racist to question where this virus came from, whether that be from the wet markets or accidentally from one of China's labs.

Well, you probably would not want to live in a country where every citizen is required to download an app for accessing essential services which is a tracking system for the Government and to present a passport and go through airport style security every time you board a train or a metro. If you are the wrong religion or a dissident,you can end up in a convention camp. Let alone if you live in Tibet. Amazing that people living in a free democracy accept this.

This virus has happened because the communist party of China failed to alter their food supply chain away from wet markets,which they have known for decades created carona viruses, SARS being so deadly it killed too many of its hosts to spread. Instead of handling the emergence of the virus in a competent way, they persecuted the doctors who raised the alarm, then lied to the whole world about anything being wrong. Had they told the world about what was really going wrong, it may have only been a regional outbreak, instead it has shut down the world, and me directly and indirectly kill millions. In addition they have concentration camps, murder their own people and are quite willing to do anything.
Due to our short sightedness, we have turned a poor communist dictatorship in to a rich one, and I hope from now on Communist China is treated how it deserves to be, a pariah state that poses the greatest danger to liberty since the Soviet Union.

I think (hope) we will see a correction to the West's sycophantic indulgence of the Chinese state. How long that will last who knows.
