Has the government advice changed on where you can go to exercise/dog walking?

Because my neighbours are going out for the whole day to walk their dog.
On Sunday they drove 2 hours away and were out for around 6 hours.
They’ve taken the dog out again today, that was about 4 hours ago.
They told my husband the advice has changed and it is now ok to go further for walks as long as you still socially distance yourself from others and the walk is longer than the drive?!
I’ve been walking our dog within our village as advised and was unaware of these changes, in fact I can not find this anywhere on the government website but when I was telling my dad he says he has heard the same thing?
I’m confused.

I drive for a walk because it’s allowed

Yes advise has changed so that you can drive for a walk so long as the walk is longer than the drive and you aren’t going just to sit down for a pick of the whole time

I didn’t realise that it had changed, thanks.

You were always allowed to drive a short distance.

The problem was police were taking it upon themselves to stop people who weren't doing anything wrong.

That wasn't ever the advice was it? I and others I see very day have been walking their dogs all over. Recently it's changed to being able to drive to an exercise place but there hasn't ever been a radius limit on far away from home you could go, are you in England?

Peapod29 · 21/04/2020 12:17

It was always allowed. They have issued guidance for the police because some forces were interpreting the rules differently.

I was using this info on the government website, obviously took it too literally.
The small town next to our village is a seaside town and was having lots of people driving there for their walks and people were getting leaflets left on their cars telling them they were not supposed to drive and to please stay home.

The information on the government website is guidance only - it's not law.

The small town next to our village is a seaside town and was having lots of people driving there for their walks and people were getting leaflets left on their cars telling them they were not supposed to drive and to please stay home.

Same thing happened here, and the police got called out on social media for it. They eventually clarified their stance after giving out mixed messages, and said you could drive a short distance to exercise, as per the law.
