So we are predicted to have the highest death toll in Europe, due to systemic errors made by this government. Do you trust the government to get us out of lock down safely?

I don't. They've f**d up too much. NHS managers are begging for PPE, NHS workers are dying.

This government have really really let us down.

We are predicted to have 40,000 deaths by the end of this.

The only silver lining is is that Labour might get its act together now Keir Starmer is in charge. Things can't get any worse.

And if any tory bots start saying 'at least it's not Corbyn'.. Well save your breath. No one could have made a bigger mess than Boris and Co.

@ssd

What’s our obesity rate like compared to the countries we’re being compared with? Obesity related illnesses and age seem to be the factors that increase the chance of death from Coronavirus.

MeganBacon · 17/04/2020 18:20

the gov are prioritising the economy over lives.
The economy IS lives. When it's bad, people die. It's more a question of balancing the two rather than prioritising one over the over.

alloutoffucks · 17/04/2020 18:23

As for choosing lockdown sooner that is based on hindsight which only requires an armchair so is quite popular.

This totally ignores that some of us have been saying for months that this was going to happen if nothing was done. It is not in hindsight. A few early threads about this was deleted by MN for scaremongering. It was clear it was coming to anyone paying attention.

DishingOutDone · 17/04/2020 18:24

@Theresomethingaboutdairy - ITV report on public health expert predictions but do not show the moment he says 40,000 deaths. However, he was shown saying 40,000 could die on BBC news immediately before the 5pm briefing today:

www.itv.com/news/2020-04-17/further-waves-of-coronavirus-will-hit-britain-leading-doctor-warns/

I understood he gave evidence to the Health select committee today, but although that's normally available on line to view, today it isn't (BBC Parliament).

ssd · 17/04/2020 18:27

It was the UCL institute for global health director who has predicted 40000 deaths in the UK, the highest in Europe , at the end of all this, due to systemic failures made by this government.

So direct your rage at him, not me. And tell him you think he must be wrong, must be saying that as click bait, tell him he is smarmying up to Trump... as posters here have said upthread.

If you believe the government are doing well, you must live in a different place to me.

I have read various articles written by economists that say prioritising lives is also prioritising the economy. Talking as if they are not linked is false.

Thinkingabout1t · 17/04/2020 18:29

SSD I feel exactly the same. I'm so angry with this government's incompetent and incoherent response which has cost so many lives.

They let the virus run wild, then suddently do a U-turn and close everything down. They're crashing the economy while still not quarantining or testing or providing adequate PPE. Just blundering.

From The Lancet Public Health journal:
Hong Kong appears to have averted a major COVID-19 outbreak ... by adopting ... a combination of border entry restrictions, quarantine and isolation of cases and contacts, together with some degree of social distancing.

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 17/04/2020 18:29

Yawn - Labour bot...

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/04/2020 18:30

The lives versus economy argument is so lazy and tiresome.

What is the NHS financed by? The economy. We all need that to survive.

Some people cannot see further than their locked down front door.

PersonaNonGarter · 17/04/2020 18:30

The government are taking a massive massive massive hit on the economy to prioritise lives.

They have to balance everything. They’re doing pretty well IMO.

HoffiCoffi13 · 17/04/2020 18:31

alloutoffucks sorry if I’ve missed it but did you clarify what you mean by ‘forced’ isolation? How would it be forced?

SantiagoSky · 17/04/2020 18:33

Everyone understands that the lockdown is bad for the economy. There is no alternative to lockdown until the virus is contained.

Shinesweetfreedom · 17/04/2020 18:34

@Tattiebee
I have seen twice were people have said they have applied for the fruit picking jobs, but heard nothing more, and they actually quoted the company doing the recruiting.

BillywilliamV · 17/04/2020 18:37

Hindsight is a glorious thing!

alloutoffucks · 17/04/2020 18:42

@HoffiCoffi13 I don't know really. Maybe keeping people in hotel rooms?

IHaveAMagicBean · 17/04/2020 18:44

Oooh! Another party political broadcast on behalf of the Labour Party!

No issues with them op, but please let us know.

Rampant speculation. We're three months in and I expect in the end all Western countries will have comparable death rates, well below .5%, slightly more dangerous than influenza.

MarginalGain · 17/04/2020 18:47

I stood over both my teenagers as they applied for fruit picking jobs - no response.

www.expressandstar.com/news/uk-news/2020/04/17/uk-covid-19-death-rates-may-not-be-comparable-because-of-testing-differences/

This is interesting - shows why country comparisons can be very misleading.

Extract:

Prof Fenton said another important reason to be sceptical of comparing other countries’ death rates with the UK is that as far as he knows, the UK is currently one of the only countries classifying every patient dying with Covid-19 as a coronavirus death, even if the cause of death was not necessarily caused by the virus.
He concluded: “So, in summary, the relatively high ‘death rates’ in the UK are likely caused by a) massively undercounting the number of people who actually have Covid-19, and b) overcounting the number of deaths caused by Covid-19.”

Oh my goodness

I can't get over how many Labour Party broadcasts there are on Mumsnet

Anyone would think this site is 99% left leaning...😂

It's abhorrent really that someone posted a thread earlier about the NHS that's run by Labour but yet it was deleted...

Unbelievable 😳😳😳

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 17/04/2020 18:51

Completely agree with you @ssd, this utter shit show is down to the lack of fucks this government (and the one before it) has given about the NHS and social care.

People will never accept that they may have voted against the nation's interest though so they will always look to blame others.

My neighbours, on both sides, work for the NHS and they are at their wits' end with the PPE situation. My local surgery is pleading for donations of gloves etc on social media, it's an utter shit show and we should be embarrassed, ashamed, and angry.

Hancock has no clue what he's doing, the daily briefing is a complete farce with no serious questions being raised, and the media aren't doing their job either.

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/04/2020 18:52

Dd has applied for jobs. Even ones she has some experience in but either not heard anything or the answer was no.

In rl she has worked some of the jobs before so wouldn’t need to be taught from scratch.

Like bird flu?

TheLadyAnneNeville · 17/04/2020 18:58

@PersonaNonGarter... the Govt. are not taking a massive hit on the economy to save lives. They’ve fucked up. They haven’t protected us. The building of 5(?) Nightingales was a knee jerk reaction when they saw they ought to have locked us “in” and down long before they did. By the time they did it’s there was absolutely no choice but to take the economic hit.

ssd · 17/04/2020 18:58

So many government supporters who can't bare to hear a word against them. I wonder how they are passing the time these days, they certainly must never be turning on the TV and watching the news.
Maybe ignorance is bliss after all.
