Short hair solutions?

I have (err... had?) short hair. Like a long crop, feathered to look feminine. I normally have it cut and thinned monthly - otherwise it gets mop like and sticks up at funny angles, not unlike a guineapig rosette. I'm considering getting my (VERY reluctant) husband to use clippers on me, if I can get a grade 8 guard. Am I bonkers? Is there a better answer? What are other short-haired women doing?
