Clapping outside hospitals has got to stop

A friend forwarded me this video -

www.facebook.com/barnsleychronicleonline/videos/158413535522368/

Far too many people all congregated together, some hugging and kissing. NHS staff outside in their uniforms and someone in their wisdom invited the local council and the local council housing team up to be clapped too!!!

Just WTAF!

Because it's part of a test to see how obedient we are. How was it EVER helping the NHS?

On another thread a poster is actually boasting about denouncing her poor neighbour on social media for not participating. This has aspects of the two minute hate from 1984 where those inclined to police collective behaviour can do so with self righteous zeal. It is very strange.

JudyCoolibar · 17/04/2020 06:57

Good grief, which thread, @BovaryX?

It's happening everywhere. I was reading 1984 when this all started and from the way some of my neighbours are acting I can see the similarities.

Wagsandclaws · 17/04/2020 07:06

This reminds me a bit of the whole atmosphere when Diana died.

It was weird and everyone had to be 'seen' to be grieving even though barely anyone knew her.

This is similar, it's morphing into something sinister and truly if you ask most NHS workers if they want people to stand outside and clap for them once a week the general consensus is no, they don't.

I won't be clapping, it's getting a bit to 1984 out there.

carriebreadshaw · 17/04/2020 07:09

It's getting very odd. I can't believe those videos!

tulippa · 17/04/2020 07:10

I love the way there's a massive crowd congregating next to a huge screen saying 'stay at home'. Confused

BovaryX · 17/04/2020 07:10

I actually think there are significant differences. The NHS has an almost religious status in the UK. There have always been Republicans but in the current febrile atmosphere, anything less than worship of the NHS is being denounced. It is like a cult. And it prevents its myriad dysfunctions from being acknowledged. Let alone addressed.

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 17/04/2020 07:11

@Wagsandclaws very true about the Diana vibe I wasn't very old when she died and remember my auntie shouting at me and telling me I was a horrible girl because I asked who she was.

Grin It's all a bit Doublethink.....

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/04/2020 07:13

I'm planning a bank robbery at 8pm next week. It seems that all the police and fire brigade are otherwise engaged then, loads of fireworks and pan banging for distraction and everyone looking the other way.

(I've appreciated the NHS for years. I also think they need a more tangible award than clapping. )

Ipadipod · 17/04/2020 07:15

We had this at our local hospital too, people are now travelling there on a Thursday just to take part ! I can’t stand this awful ‘look at meee’ attitude, people are getting more and more ridiculous in trying to outdo each other in the ‘look how fantastic I am’ stakes.

Theodoreb · 17/04/2020 07:15

Police and firefighters up our local hospital as well as loads of people who it seems were not patients. I don't clap I'm shielding and worried tbh but anxious I'll be judged for not clapping.

It is a grim comment on the denunciation brigade that you feel anxious for not participating. Nobody should feel pressured and those who are making you and no doubt many others feel anxious? They should be ashamed of themselves.

SpeckledFrogsLog · 17/04/2020 07:19

I just posted on the AIBU thread about our local hospital who has a singer banging out “Simply the Best”! Loads of people singing and dancing including emergency services, hospital staff, members of the public (some holding babies)! It was like party in the bloody park Shock

Maxandezra · 17/04/2020 07:26

the clapping needs to stop. full stop. it is and always has been bloody ridiculous. and I am a clinician working for the NHS

Didiusfalco · 17/04/2020 07:29

I agree those videos are very weird, but in my own street it’s more an opportunity to wave to the neighbours at a time when you can’t really see anyone. I think the time when princess Diana died was much stranger because at a certain point the atmosphere felt quite volatile, and it was illogical really the level of emotion that was focused on her.

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 17/04/2020 07:29

I'm also finding the noise is really upsetting my son who has sensory issues the first week didn't bother him when it was just clapping but now he is up half the night every Thursday because the noise sends him over the edge.

Coffeecak3 · 17/04/2020 07:33

Imo it would be far better if everyone spent 5 minutes on a Thursday lobbying their mp about the lack of ppe.

leckford · 17/04/2020 07:34

I thought you were supposed to stand on your doorstep or learn out of your window. Some of them have probably driven down. Virtue signalling

EricaNernie · 17/04/2020 07:36

It has to be doing some good, all the police cars outside the hospitals, it is good for morale. we need some sort of emotional outlet rather than reading the dreadful news stories all the time.
we need positivity and to show we appreciate the NHS workers.

Witchend · 17/04/2020 07:37

I thought the same for our local hospital.
Problem is having put videos on FB etc next week people will think "oh that looked great I'll go too" and it'll potentially get bigger and bigger.

EricaNernie · 17/04/2020 07:41

at least we can see the stories on facebook and the news, we dont have to physically go to the hospital to appreciate it
tbh in hospital the staff are no distancing themselves as far as i can see

Rocketmam · 17/04/2020 07:43

Never clapped once and proud of it.

Just seemed like an extension of those pointless facebook tagging pictures of people doing various unrelated things to show support for causes they could just have quietly donated to. Usually under the guide of 'raising awareness' of themselves already very well known conditions/suicide etc.

EricaNernie · 17/04/2020 07:46

Captain Tom has done a fantastic and worthy job, shared by the power of social media
