Why are more men dying?

I read this earlier. They’re dying at twice the rate of women. Why would this be?

I don't think anyone knows for sure, but my guess is that it's tied into the fact that obesity os a huge risk factor.

Men tend to carry their weight around their chest area, whereas women tend to carry it in the hip/thigh/bottom area.

If you're struggling to breathe, just from a mechanical pov, it would be harder for men's lungs to inflate with all that weight pressing down on them.

I expect that is also the reason why lying patients on their fronts is known to help; gravity will assist in the inflation of the lungs?

I'm no doctor though...happy to stand corrected on this one...

scientists/doctors have at present no idea really. we just don't know at this moment.

CathyandHeathcliff · 16/04/2020 19:13

I heard it could be the XX chromosome

It's still under investigation as they just don't know why men are dying more than women

Mrsmorton · 16/04/2020 19:16

I read that lots of the immune system is carried on the X chromosome. Women tend to have "stronger" immune systems because we have 2. But also more auto immune diseases. Men's systems respond differently to things like vaccinations etc.

hopefulhalf · 16/04/2020 19:17

I thought it was the ACE receptors in the lungs that the virus latches onto.....

Fatted · 16/04/2020 19:19

Do they still put bat poo in mascara? Perhaps women have built up an immunity to bat viruses by smearing their crap over themselves for centuries?

I don't know what the scientific reasons are behind it. But they do say men generally get the flu worse than women, hence 'man flu'

dementedpixie · 16/04/2020 19:21

Maybe a mix of immune response and hormones according to some websites

fedupfrida · 16/04/2020 19:23

Just commented on this on the vitamin D thread...
I’m no doctor but here’s my thoughts...
Men are less likely to take vitamins than women so are generally lower in Vit d.
Men are more likely to be smokers (this was stated by an Italian doctor but I’ve no idea if it is true in the UK)
Men are higher in testosterone so their immune systems tend to react more stronger to Covid.
Like I said, I’m no doctor so am happy to be corrected on my musings.

Kitchendoctor · 16/04/2020 19:26

Heart disease also more prevalent in men

Kitchendoctor · 16/04/2020 19:28

I think it’s because your lungs are more towards your back, so they can inflate more easily if you’re lying on the front. Perhaps also helps with drainage.

TinnedPearsForPudding · 16/04/2020 19:29

Men will often seek medical help later and when more seriously ill than women. Their condition maybe harder to treat then. Might be a factor

tinytemper66 · 16/04/2020 19:32

In Wales more women are being diagnosed with it but unsure if they are dying at a higher rate than men. Will need to check what I read yesterday. Suggestions include they are employed in higher risk/frontline jobs in Wales.

june2007 · 16/04/2020 19:33

Iwould have thought due to lower health levels in the first place.

happytoday73 · 16/04/2020 19:34

Legionnaires disease may be bacteria based but in some ways quite similar it also kills elderly & more men than women

dementedpixie · 16/04/2020 19:34

Oestrogen and women's immune response is probably part of the answer.

Soulface · 16/04/2020 19:35

More Ace 2 receptors

Hippofrog · 16/04/2020 19:36

Women have greater immune systems.

BilboBercow · 16/04/2020 19:37

It's that extra x chromosome 💅

Jjjjjj1981 · 16/04/2020 19:42

I’ve read a number of articles in the national, and local, news that a big majority of those not complying with lockdown are men.
I wonder if, sadly, this is another contributing factor, or could be as the lockdown continues?

Egghead68 · 16/04/2020 19:47

They should all self-identify as women to lower their risk.

Mistigri · 16/04/2020 19:48

Probably some lifestyle factors, but the difference is too big and too consistent between countries for it to be just that ... there must be some genuine difference in immune response.

Angellegna · 16/04/2020 19:49

And yet - the NHS is NOT collecting sex data on its online coronavirus symptom checker!

It’s absolutely insane!
