Why are more men dying?

CathyandHeathcliff · 16/04/2020 19:04

I read this earlier. They’re dying at twice the rate of women. Why would this be?

None of this makes sense in my persona experiences. Me and dh have had it. I recovered pretty quickly and he took 3 weeks and needed antibiotics. Out of the 2 of us he is by far the fittest and strongest. Though I came down with it first so viral load may have something to do with it

QM2QEQV · 16/04/2020 19:52

Could be that men tend to consume more alcohol than women

There are a number of possibilities currently being investigated.
The published research suggests some reasons:

There is research in to this phenomena with coronavirus

'And yet - the NHS is NOT collecting sex data on its online coronavirus symptom checker!

It’s absolutely insane!'

This is because the symptom checker is for a very specific purpose, to help get a picture of how need is distributed across the country and enable the NHS to plan resources accordingly, rather than as a general 'finding out how the disease works' research tool. (A member of my family was involved with creating it and we have discussed this.) It avoids any questions superfluous to that goal to keep it as short and simple as possible. No doubt plenty of other more targeted research will address the sex question.

BeardedMum · 16/04/2020 20:15

I think men wash their hands less and have worse hygiene.

Maighdeann · 16/04/2020 20:34

We were discussing this earlier. I read a study about men having less ability to deal with viruses in general (man flu). As in, it's a fact they feel worse and it's not a made up thing. DH reckons it's because men spend more time in the pub and are more exposed to it at greater levels. I think my theory holds more merit Wink

vera99 · 16/04/2020 20:39

Because they suffer in silence ?

nocoolnamesleft · 16/04/2020 20:43

There was a paper within the last couple of years looking at severity of flu in men vs women, found that men tended to be worse affected, and postulated differences in immune function. One could extrapolate... We don't understand all the biological differences between males and females, but it's very complex.

buttermilkwaffles · 16/04/2020 20:49

Another article on this below. Says nobody knows, but theories include smoking (but probably not) behaviour reasons, eg less likely to wash hands etc (although surely this would only explain infections and not outcomes?) or sex difference in immune response.

Men are much more likely to die from coronavirus - but why?

Mrsmorton · 16/04/2020 20:50

The real issue here is that man and women are different. No matter how much nail varnish they wear.

britnay · 16/04/2020 21:02

men are pretty shit at washing their hands :S

ViciousJackdaw · 16/04/2020 21:04

It's not that more men are dying, it's more women surviving. Scientific researchers at the Sir B. Olleaux Institute have discovered that this is nature's way of compensating women. For having to put up with men. This is also why we live longer in general.

Rayn · 16/04/2020 21:09

Just a thought that maybe because women's bodies are more resilient hence why women give birth. Not saying they are stronger but are built to go through a lot.

yestonodressyet · 16/04/2020 21:09

Not specifically corona related but a paediatric nurse told me when our son was in NICU for a week when he was first born that 75% of the babies admitted there were boys rather than girls

BeetrootRocks · 16/04/2020 21:09

Countess why do they need gender then? I believe they were collecting sex but decided to collect gender instead shortly after launch.

BeetrootRocks · 16/04/2020 21:10

It's a known thing that more boys are born but more girls survive ending up with a more or less balance

mrsurqhart · 16/04/2020 21:14

It's Man Flu.
No not really. Women have greater immune systems partly via xx chromosomes.
Don't agree more men have heart disease. More women have untreated and undiagnosed heart disease (health care misogyny).

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 16/04/2020 21:14

Beetrootrocks, I thought it was the Kings one that switched from sex to gender, the NHS one didn't ask for either?

BeetrootRocks · 16/04/2020 21:17

Oh sorry countess I'm probably thinking of the wrong one.

Comment retracted!

Gin96 · 16/04/2020 21:23

Another link, not sure if this has already been on here

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/16/men-die-of-coronavirus-at-twice-womens-rate-in-england-and-wales

Gin96 · 16/04/2020 21:23

Maybe men will have to stay at home and self isolate and women will run the country.

sewingsinger · 16/04/2020 21:29

Men have poorer hygience practices - less hand washing/washing?
Men more likely to be dismissive 'it's only the flu'
Men more likely to have an 'entitled' attitude i.e. still going out, ignoring guidelines

A recent example - Cheltenham loads more men than women

As regards flu being worse for men than women, I'd like to understand this more - in what way?

YeOldeTrout · 16/04/2020 21:37

Someone medical told me that men always do worse with pneumonia. There are lots of theories why. I am wondering if there's something different about their physiology related to having a higher VO2max, like a hidden weakness that goes with that.
