When do you expect gyms to reopen?

Just that really.

When do you expect gyms/leisure centres to reopen?

Before schools? After pubs and restaurants?

I suppose we should watch to see what happens in other countries 🤷🏼‍♀️
October though😕 that's very depressing😥

Nanalisa60 · 10/05/2020 00:21

I think I miss my spin class followed by a swim and steam room even more then I miss going to the pub, and I love going out for drinks!!

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 10/05/2020 00:33

Lots have invested in gym kit for home and will not see the point in going back. Two neighbours in my small cul-de-sac have kitted out gyms at home with bench presses and cross trainers - amazing. A fellow teacher had already kitted out an outside cabin with gym stuff as he said it would be cheaper option in the long run for him, wife and three kids and it looks great.

I have enjoyed my online classes and would not be surprised if some instructors continue to offer the service.

I think David Lloyd and the like will suffer. I cancelled my DL membership in February as going just twice a week is not worth it. Lots of classes when I am at work and mainly spinning in the evening or packed Pilates classes.

So zoom classes at home and the local pool will be fine.

ARudeTerriblePerson · 10/05/2020 00:40

I'll be there like a shot the minute it opens. Some people, ahem, must be putting on weight if they were regular gym users.

maresydoats · 10/05/2020 00:47

Gyms are germ growers and always were.

OMG, just like Corona. That's a totally different animal now though.

Sorry now, much as I ignored the germ factor before now, I will not be returning to an indoor cesspit of germs, sweat and all the rest of it anytime soon.

No wonder so many are walking, running etc outdoors now.

Londonlassy · 10/05/2020 00:48

I miss going to the gym incredibly BUT even if the gym reopened I don’t think I would go. I couldn’t relax I couldn’t focus on my exercise. I would be hyper vigilant on every cough, sniffle person standing in my vicinity I struggle exercising at home and sadly slowly accepting this is the current reality.

B1rdbra1n · 10/05/2020 00:49

If I had a garage I'd be going full home gym, perhaps I can quickly move house in the interim between lock downs 🤔

B1rdbra1n · 10/05/2020 00:52

Indoor cesspit of germs sweat and all the rest of it
Holy cow you don't take any prisoners do you😮 the gym is a place of worship how could you 😶

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 10/05/2020 01:03

@B1rdbra1n - garage gym conversions are going to be all the rage! After seeing the neighbours, we may go for one depending upon costs. The local DL is £120 per month so it would not take long to recover the cost.

B1rdbra1n · 10/05/2020 01:08

I know 😮 there won't be enough 'iron' to go round will there😥
Damn I never expected to lose all my toys like this😥

B1rdbra1n · 10/05/2020 01:10

Actually that should be 'place of worship😷' and where the hand sanitizer emoticon

Definitely. I'm an absolute bloater already from a mixture of my daily steps reducing from 12-16,000 to about 75 a day when I'm working and post viral breathlessness making it impossible to go out for a walk.

Taking out the gym and pool, which I would still be able to do with the breathlessness (if I could get there) thanks to aircon and the machines controlling my movements, means I am huge and getting bigger despite trying my best to avoid the 'I'm bored' snacks, vastly improving the quality of the food we have/reducing carbs and fat and generally doing what I can to get better.

PilatesPeach · 10/05/2020 12:02

It is not just putting on weight through lack of gym, it is also through lack of incidental activity. Eating the same, even doing an hour of exercise a day will for many, still lead to a gradual weight gain as you are likely to be sedentary for much of the rest of the day. Perhaps not so much for office workers but people who are off work that used to be on their feet or getting up and down alot of walking in their job or had an active job or who used to walk their dog maybe 3 times a day or walk to the shops most days or walk to the bus or train station etc etc - if this stuff is no longer happening, it contributes to weight gain. Just being busy and active burns calories without formal exercise. I am still exercising but as I used to run and take dog 3 times a day as well as teach, I have now got an small extra tyre - I think I will need to eat less. Hopefully Boris will announce more outside time later.

I don't know if this is just clickbait or is it cause for optimism 🤔

PilatesPeach · 10/05/2020 12:58

I think Boris is a changed man since contracting the virus - if he hadn't, I think he would be more "relaxed" and open to opinions such as this but now he seems ultra cautious and I doubt the benefits of exercise indoors will persuade his to change his strategy (if that is gyms opening later) especially as he looks set to relax outdoor exercise frequency. I don't think that he will feel the benefits outweigh the risks for gym environments myself.

B1rdbra1n · 10/05/2020 13:14

I think your reasoning is sound there Pilates
(As desperate as I am to get back to the 'real thing' of proper gym equipment🤦🏼‍♀️)

Mnthrowaway20202 · 10/05/2020 13:18

I reckon gyms will be awfully busy once they reopen, similar to how packed they are in January (newbies with new year resolutions talking about “new year, new me”).

There will be more people joining gyms so i wouldn’t expect the same amount of members inside as pre-lockdown - so it will be interesting to see how social distancing will be managed, I don’t think everyone who will want to visit will be allowed in at once

dammit88 · 11/05/2020 08:17

Do you think its likely they will open mid June based on last nights information if the R number remains below 1?

feelingverylazytoday · 11/05/2020 08:27

Swimming pools could be opened with some adaptions in the changing rooms, eg alternate cubicles taped off.
Some exercise classes could be held outside. Park gyms, running tracks, skate parks, tennis courts and golf courses could be all be opened quite soon.

B1rdbra1n · 11/05/2020 11:52

It seems to me that most outdoor exercise could be adapted fairly easily?

Mnthrow, I'm torn on that one🤔 either be really busy because people have been desperate to get back to it.....or really quiet because everyone is scared to go to what seems like an area of high transmission😳

PilatesPeach · 11/05/2020 15:00

Gyms stage 3 earliest 1st July announced this afternoon but date will get later if virus numbers increase

Where did you read that? Last week Daily Mail said October but as gyms are in leisure I read the government's paper today as perhaps including them which says 1st July earliest, of course no guarantee but would be interested to know where you saw that thanks as I teach classes there so it is my living.
