When do you expect gyms to reopen?

Just that really.

When do you expect gyms/leisure centres to reopen?

Before schools? After pubs and restaurants?

I think swimming facilities will open before private gyms (we have snap fitness chain) and rightly so. My partner used to go and the people there are filthy. Leaving all the equipment covered in sweat and goodness knows what else without so much as a wipe.

Probably find ground zero for the plague in that place nevermind corona

megletthesecond · 17/04/2020 12:30

Months and months.

Although I was always good at washing my hands before and afterwards. Some of the sweat in there.
Might get some weights gloves.

One of my teachers is posting lethal workouts on our WhatsApp group.

izzywizzygood · 17/04/2020 12:41

I hope they open as soon as possible. Pre-closure staff were cleaning everywhere: doors, bikes, equipment. Some machines taken out of use to enforce social distancing. Surely it's better for the nation for gyms to re-open over pubs and restaurants.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/04/2020 12:46

I'm at an expensive david lloyd gym and the studio is tiny - only 16 in a class and it's a nightmare trying to get booked in at the best of times. No way am I paying £120 a month if the classes are reduced to 8 in a class and it's even harder to get in a class.

I'd like to think maybe they'd double the amount of classes but that would cost them money in instructor fees so I seriously doubt it.

crustycrab · 17/04/2020 12:46

Nobody knows

HostessTrolley · 17/04/2020 12:52

My gym closed late on but had social distancing in place well before. Alternate machines in the gym roped off for spacing. Lots of cleaning stuff dotted around and staff constantly wiping down equipment, door handles etc. A cleaner constantly on duty in changing rooms. Class numbers restricted for spacing, all equipment sprayed and cleaned at the start and end of classes and a minimum 45 minute gap with studio empty between classes to allow air circulation. Far easier to maintain distance there than in pubs/cafes/restaurants/coffee shops and exercise is good for both physical and mental health.

TowerRingInferno · 17/04/2020 13:01

One of the last things.

happyandsingle · 17/04/2020 13:06

I dont think they will open until a vaccine is found.

Taddda · 17/04/2020 13:11

Well my neighbours upstairs (flat) seem to have bought themselves a running machine and like to 'go for a run' for a few hours every morning from 8am....so there's their solution....(fuckers) Angry

Widowodiw · 17/04/2020 13:20

It’s essentially a gathering of people in the same smallish room for a period of time. They won’t be open first.

B1rdbra1n · 17/04/2020 13:22

But gyms are place where you fight the fat and fat makes you more at risk!
Gums will be the first to open ...no one who's vulnerable will go there anyway

Aren't those clinics still open...Grin

A vaccine will be "found" within a year.
Vaccinating everybody will take a decade.
You really think that the fitness industry will close down for years?
Really?

jcurve · 17/04/2020 15:49

My prediction is mid-late June, one of the last services to reopen. I expect that the work from home recommendation will be curtailed at the end of May but employers will be required to do a staged return with an element of distancing, with non-essential shops reopening on 1st June.

I’m not going back to the gym. We got a Peloton bike & I have taken up kettlebells. Doing exercise at home is easier & quicker to fit in than going to the gym. Apart from reformer pilates at a local pilates studio, I don’t see myself going back to classes.

TheClitterati · 17/04/2020 16:00

I never thought I would say this but I miss my gym & it's pool so much.

As soon as it reopens I will change my monthly membership to an annual one.

merrymouse · 17/04/2020 16:03

I think we will have some form of social distancing until a vaccine is found, and that will take at least a year.

While it's possible for gyms to enforce some social distancing - reduce class sizes, take out equipment, stricter hygiene measures - they also need to make that work financially and that is going to be a challenge, particularly for those who charge per visit/class.

ListeningQuietly · 17/04/2020 16:10

FINDING a vaccine is not the same as vaccinating 60 million people in the UK alone

Magpiefeather · 17/04/2020 16:17

The problem is not just the sweat on machines and the proximity of gym-goers.... everyone is working out and breathing in (and out!) more than usual, obviously they have air conditioning to circulate the air but there’ll be a lot of “droplets” in the air I would imagine.

I have close family who work in a gym which is also a spa .... surely spa treatments can’t open anytime soon? Actually having to rub someone’s face or body? I fear though that people will be forced back to work before it’s really safe. Have to admit it’s a worry.

Actionhasmagic · 17/04/2020 16:19

Why will it take a decade to vaccinate everyone?

merrymouse · 17/04/2020 16:24

Whatever you think the timescale for a vaccine will be, people will not be happily sweating next to each other in a confined space while they wait for herd immunity/a vaccine.

Humans adapt and there might be more out door gym classes, more expensive gym memberships and higher sales of home fitness equipment, but people aren't just going to go back to the gym.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 17/04/2020 16:25

Well how long to you reckon it takes to vaccinate 67 million people? Admittedly I don’t know if it would take a decade or not but it would take a fucking long time don’t you think?

ListeningQuietly · 17/04/2020 16:26

Action
Why will it take a decade to vaccinate everyone?
For a university to vaccinate all 10,000 of its students against meningitis took 3 days - and they were all in one small place.

THe Government cannot manage to test people for Covid at a rate over 10,000 a day
where is the leeway in the health system to bring every person into a GP surgery to be vaccinated?

MMR covers one cohort and takes the whole year and only reaches 80%
THe logistics of mass vaccination are enormous.

ListeningQuietly · 17/04/2020 16:27

I will.
I cannot wait to go back to my gym.
I'd go back tomorrow if I could.

merrymouse · 17/04/2020 16:38

I'd go back tomorrow if I could.

And if your gym is financially viable with a small number of users, that might be possible relatively soon.

If their business model depends on churning 100s of children's swimming lessons through less than hygienic changing rooms, you might not be so lucky.

billybagpuss · 17/04/2020 16:41

The week before lockdown the gym was empty I had the pool to myself for an hour mid morning, it was heaven. I really miss the pool. I think they’ll open partially with smaller classes and limited numbers which won’t be difficult as financially our gym has suspended membership payments with the option of suspending further which I’m sure some people will do.
