Financial rewards for frontline hospital staff, police and teachers

From the Guardian:-

Frontline hospital staff are to get bonuses of between €500 and €1,500 and up to time and a half for overtime hours until the end of the health emergency. The extra payments and bonuses will be free of tax and social charges. There will also be payments to carers in nursing and residential homes.
Public officials who are working through the lockdown could be eligible for bonuses of up to €1,000, including police officers and teachers who have taken care of the children of essential workers.

Meanwhile in the UK our government cheered when they managed to block any increase to their planned 1% pay rise for nurses - a real term pay cut

I don't deserve a reward, I'm a teacher who is mainly teaching from home and doing a day in school once a week for keyworker children.
My DD is an ITU nurse and deserves a reward, a pay rise and for the free parking of the last month at her hospital to continue. The daily rate before that was an insult.

I'm a teacher and would not expect or accept a reward. Yes I have been working but in reality it's not a fraction of what I do in normal times. Give it to the nurses, doctors, paramedics, etc.

I think those doing dangerous work or more work deserve financial recognition, so those in health and social care settings etc. The teachers I know are mostly working at home and not harder than normal so not sure about them.

I work in adult social care in Bavaria (southern Germany) and were getting 500€ for full time staff and 300€ for those working less than 26 hours. It's pretty annoying to people on 25 hour contracts who've been doing 50 hour weeks on the understanding they'll get time off in lieu at some undetermined point... But certainly better than a

Matt Hancock has given our social care staff a blue badge so far.

I'm a teacher and do not want or expect a financial reward. Give it to those on the front line - and equip them with the PPE they deserve.

Mind you, Macron has also conceded mistakes were made. Our government can't even do that, so I can't imagine they'd financially reward workers either.

I think front line NHS staff certainly deserve a bonus/reward but not all NHS/police/teachers etc.

Eg a lot of teachers are working at home with only a day in school, aren’t doing loads of work at moment, not all police officers are front line and taking risks (I have two friends in comms which is not front line - they have a police officers salary despite doing the same job as civilian staff, who get paid considerably less)

Where is all of this money coming from??

@AllTheUserNamesAreTaken I agree that is shouldn’t be all nhs staff. My sister works for the nhs and actually has a lot less work than usual and is getting loads of free food. I also know people who work for dwp/Hmrc who are working very long hours and don’t get any thanks

Carers on minimum wage dealing with it without sufficient training or protection should over everyone else tbh.

Front line police officer here and absolutely baffled as to why any Police worker would think they should get a bonus. Business as usual for us.

....and most of them will get 80% of their wages for doing nothing - so yes your mum deserves a reward. (I know not everyone is covered as some people have sadly fallen into gaps in the policy).

I think the fairest way would be time and a half for each hour of front line service for people working up close and personal I.e. doctors/nurses/carers - so people who can maintain social distancing or NHS and carers who are back office /working from home would not be eligible. As much as "reward" this is also about incentive as organisations might be left with very few people willing to work front line caring work and they need to pull in lots of hours from those who will.

Death in service payments also need to be reviewed for active front line workers dying of Covid as these payments wouldn't usually reflect death BY service. They also shouldn't only apply to people in the pension scheme.

he NHS is the largest employer in the world and is paid solely out of taxes. Even a 1% increase has a huge fiscal impact. There are also increments in NHS roles so it’s rarely “only” 1%. Plus, the pension still knocks the socks off of anything in the private sector. All of these things are relevant - it shouldn’t be a purely emotional decision.

I've recently looked back at my mostly dormant Facebook account and seen an old school friend with a back office NHS job posting lots of self praise for her keyworker NHS self, including gracefully thanking people for clapping and humbly protesting that she is just doing her bit. The next post half an hour later is a picture of her and adult children having silly fun in the garden with a caption about going out of her mind having not left the house for 12 straight days due to doing her bit, hashtag stay at home...

So I suspect that limiting bonuses to workers actually doing some form of hands on "in person" care rather than the entire NHS workforce would be reasonable!

Nhs worker here. All critical care staff should get a bonus. Not all nhs staff have stepped off so it would seem unfair to reward those wfh for example. My work has been b v stressful but we’re err all in debt to itu staff, not sure how fairly rewards could be done.
Thank you for the teachers being honest - it’s very refreshing !
