Prolonging the lockdown for everyone else?

I understand that we're staying home to flatten the curve so the NHS can cope, but I'm reading over and over about people doing things that other people don't agree with are prolonging the lockdown for everyone else.

How does this work? What is the exit plan and how are people interfering with it?

People stay at home and don't mix -> Fewer opportunities for the virus to spread so fewer people in hospital now

People travel/spread/mix/gather -> More opportunities for the virus to spread so more people in hospital soon

Once fewer people are catching the virus at the same time we have more possibility to trace cases/contacts and isolate them so restrictions can be lifted.

We had that opportunity at the beginning, when there were seemingly a handful of cases and we were contact tracing and quarantining.
Can you see us getting to a point where that is manageable again?
