Will we ever use Ibuprofen again?

I’ve always used Ibuprofen for period pain and inflammation. I have equal amounts of Ibuprofen and paracetamol in my medicine cupboard but haven’t touched the Ibuprofen since discussion about its use for Coronavirus. Even if we all come out of isolation, unless we’ve had Corona, we’ll be wary of the Ibuprofen in case we happen to get the virus.? Am I wrong?

I prefer ibuprofen to paracetamol and wouldn't hesitate to use it still.

ofwarren · 12/04/2020 23:33

I will be very wary yes. I have about 4 boxes in my medicine cupboard that are untouched. I bought more paracetamol rather than using the ibuprofen.

PurpleDaisies · 12/04/2020 23:33

Yes, you’re wrong. This article explains it here...

I'm still using it for my children? You can use it for other ailments just not coronavirus. I currently have a teething baby and it seems to work better than calpol in the night.

CaryStoppins · 12/04/2020 23:36

I used some today Hmm

I don't think there was any evidence for it being a problem with coronavirus anyway.

PicsInRed · 12/04/2020 23:38

I will use in future, it's a God send. But at the moment? Avoiding.

Interestingly, the young woman who was the face of healthy young people with severe coronavirus disease had been taking 8 ibuprofen per day.

Queenoftheashes · 12/04/2020 23:38

I’m using it regularly for ear infection and headaches

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 12/04/2020 23:39

I'll keep using as it's the only thing that seems to deal with my headaches, period pain and back ache

Davespecifico · 12/04/2020 23:39

Thanks PurpleDaisies- that’s useful to read.

I'm still using it when I feel I need it, mainly for muscle pain.

isabellerossignol · 12/04/2020 23:40

I'm still using it. I took some today for joint pain, it works far better than paracetamol for that sort of thing.

Davespecifico · 12/04/2020 23:41

My concern was that I’d use it for something else, get Corona then be compromised vp e abuse I have it in my system.

Until we know more about whether ibuprofen works similarly in coronavirus as it does in chicken pox (greatly exacerbating the disease in some), OP your caution seems sensible.

viccat · 13/04/2020 01:34

If you take it for something else and have no corona symptoms, what's the risk? It doesn't stay in your system long anyway.

MeadowHay · 13/04/2020 01:47

I'm still taking it occasionally for things like period pain, migraines and muscular back pain. Theres no real evidence base to suggest it's dangerous for coronavirus.

Also PP mentioned chicken pox, ibuprofen does not make chicken pox worse, it's linked to a very rare serious skin reaction. That affects far less children than febrile convulsions do.

JustStayHome · 13/04/2020 02:24

@MeadowHay

You are not suppose to give ibuprofen to your child if they have chicken pox, only if the doctor has said its ok.

If you was to go to the pharmacy and ask for child's ibuprofen for chicken pox, they wouldn't give it to you

Bringonspring · 13/04/2020 02:28

Queenoftheashes-yes me to. Ear infection and a side effect of a headache is new to me but had 2 ead infections with headaches. Any tips? I’ve also found that only ibuprofen works

OpthalmosVerde · 13/04/2020 02:32

They just gave me some in A&E for a suspected fracture. There’s only a suspicion of it maybe being an issue with CoV, the advice is a precaution. If you need it for other things it’s fine.

HalfBearOtherHalfCat · 13/04/2020 03:52

Unless I actually get coronavirus, or think it is probable that I have contracted it then I will just keep using ibuprofen, because it actually works. Unlike paracetamol, which does absolutely nothing for me.

BestZebbie · 13/04/2020 04:30

If I was treating a sore throat and fever right now, definitely paracetamol not ibuprofen. But otherwise, especially if you don't have any covid symptoms and are in lockdown (so low risk of catching it right now) - why not? It passes through the body fairly quickly.

squeekums · 13/04/2020 04:34

still using it, wont stop, my back pain says i must lol

eurochick · 13/04/2020 04:47

I took some yesterday for a headache and period pain. I wouldn't take it if I had Coronavirus symptoms.

IndieTara · 13/04/2020 04:55

Still using ibuprofen here it works better for back and hip pain

PotholeParadise · 13/04/2020 04:56

What HalfBearOtherHalfCat said, except that paracetamol does work for me. I always use both according to which I think will work better.

Unless I actually get coronavirus, or think it is probable that I have contracted it then I will just keep using ibuprofen, because it actually works.

QuimJongUn · 13/04/2020 07:42

I use NSAIDS daily for my rheumatoid arthritis. Sometimes Naproxen, sometimes ibuprofen with codeine. I will carry on taking it on the advice of my GP and rheumatologist who both have said that there is no proven link between taking them and exacerbating Covid 19 symptoms. Without them I'm often in too much pain to get out of bed so I've no choice really.
