Will we ever use Ibuprofen again?

Davespecifico · 12/04/2020 23:31

I’ve always used Ibuprofen for period pain and inflammation. I have equal amounts of Ibuprofen and paracetamol in my medicine cupboard but haven’t touched the Ibuprofen since discussion about its use for Coronavirus. Even if we all come out of isolation, unless we’ve had Corona, we’ll be wary of the Ibuprofen in case we happen to get the virus.? Am I wrong?

I would/will use it for other things (joint paint, inflammation) as I would normally.

Although the risk of using it with CV hasn't been proven, I'd err on the side of caution & not use it for a temperature.

There's contradictory research results. As with all medications the manufacturer hedge their bets. Read the small print and 99 times out of a hundred the medication can cause the symtons you're taking it for! On a personal note I never understood how anyone thought taking asprin / para / ibu etc for a headache would work. When I had a headache I couldn't move for 8 hours.
No medication and a few glasses of wine seem to work quite well for most of my ailments.

BurgerOnTheOrientExpress · 13/04/2020 07:53

Wish I could find a medication to check my spelling. Symptoms.

Random18 · 13/04/2020 07:56

Yes!

I used it the other day for a sore neck. Much better than paracetamol and it means I keep my paracetamol stocks.

Will be not use it if I have trouble breathing but not concerned about its use at other times.

HoffiCoffi13 · 13/04/2020 07:58

I’m still using it myself when I think it will work better than paracetamol.

DreamingofSunshine · 13/04/2020 08:02

@QuimJongUn same, I take it for RA. The RA is causing me pain right now and I need to manage it in order to function.

Cremebrule · 13/04/2020 08:04

I’d use it for obvious muscle pain but I’ve been wary with my children and I only have Calpol in the house for them. It is contraindicated for a number of things like kidney infections, chicken pox. I suspect my baby will end up with asthma as she always has a viral wheeze with any illness, vaccination etc.

ACoverIsNotABook · 13/04/2020 08:05

I use it when I start with a bad headache or a migraine. I wouldn’t use it if the children or I had CV symptoms. Yes, there’s no evidence the ibuprofen can cause complications BUT there has been observations that it has caused complications AND actions speak louder than words - My mum has been taken off all her NSAIDs for her rheumatoid arthritis for the duration and she is dependent upon those for “normal” life.

Thedogshow · 13/04/2020 08:06

I take it if I get a headache. Would only avoid it if I thought I was very ill with coronavirus. Paracetamol doesn’t work for headaches for me.

Cecesea · 13/04/2020 08:10

Just used it yesterday for period cramp and before when I had a head cold/headache. Dont see the issue?

Vitaceae · 13/04/2020 08:12

I take it for fibro pain. I tolerate it better than paracetamol, which makes me feel queasy. Took some this morning for a bad headache.

Spidey66 · 13/04/2020 08:13

The advice was it wasn't great for coronavirus. Not that it wasn't great for period pain backache, toothache, and the numerous other reasons people take it.

Dongdingdong · 13/04/2020 08:14

Why wouldn’t you use it again? There are other ailments apart from coronavirus you know Confused

bellinisurge · 13/04/2020 08:17

Paracetamol makes me feel dizzy. My painkiller-anti inflammatory of choice is ibuprofen. I have MS.
Obviously, if I get Covid-19, I will take paracetamol because dizziness would be the least of my concerns.

womanvsfood · 13/04/2020 08:23

I've just had coronavirus (confirmed), combined with a period from hell - it was horrible being unable to take ibuprofen Sad

YeOldeTrout · 13/04/2020 08:27

the young woman who was the face of healthy young people with severe coronavirus disease had been taking 8 ibuprofen per day.

@PicsInRed, can you provide a link to the story about this woman, Source?

Dyrne · 13/04/2020 08:29

Fine, don’t take it; if it stops people hoarding it like they have with paracetamol then it means people who actually need it stand a chance of finding some in shops.

The “research” that is coming out at the moment is nothing more than educated guesses really. We won’t know for sure all the variables and causes for quite some time.

The original fb hysteria was based off 2 young women who died without any known underlying conditions, and literally the only thing linking the two was that they’d both taken ibuprofen, so that was what was remarked upon as a “well we can’t rule it out”. Then of course the media grabbed hold of it and hence the Facebook posts of “my aunt’s hairdresser’s cousin’s mate is a nurse in the NHS and she says...”

Random18 · 13/04/2020 08:32

I think we also need to use common sense.

If I take it and get some symptoms of corona virus later is that going to cause too many issues?

I won't deliberately take it with CV. I will probably try and not take anything if I am honest to allow any fever to do its job - if I am not in too much discomfort.

Piixxiiee · 13/04/2020 08:34

We used it on ds who had suspected coronavirus. Dr said theres a vague idea about its link with virus but nothing scientifically proven. Ds 4 had high temperature for 7 days paracetamol made no difference so we used ibruprofen that was the turning point. Dr advice.

Honeyroar · 13/04/2020 08:35

I took some this week when I fell badly and bruised my leg.

Chrisinthemorning · 13/04/2020 08:46

I’ve taken it for a headache and period pain this week.
I would probably avoid it if I had CV symptoms but I haven’t.

frumpety · 13/04/2020 08:59

I have taken it a couple of times over the last couple of weeks for pain, because it works well. I have given it to DS twice too. It is still a useful medication. If we develop corona virus symptoms I would use the cold and flu stuff we have in the medicine cupboard.

GameSetMatch · 13/04/2020 08:59

Yes, I will use ibuprofen, just used some for my painful back!

PineappleDanish · 13/04/2020 09:00

I had a headache this morning and took two ibuprofen. Because it's a perfectly safe drug. Just not great for one particular virus.

MigginsMs · 13/04/2020 09:00

I had a really horrible bug in February and took it, stopped though as I had horrible diarrhoea which I put down to that , so avoiding it anyway despite the virus
