Will we ever use Ibuprofen again?

Davespecifico · 12/04/2020 23:31

I’ve always used Ibuprofen for period pain and inflammation. I have equal amounts of Ibuprofen and paracetamol in my medicine cupboard but haven’t touched the Ibuprofen since discussion about its use for Coronavirus. Even if we all come out of isolation, unless we’ve had Corona, we’ll be wary of the Ibuprofen in case we happen to get the virus.? Am I wrong?

Hang one - when all the panic buying kicked off the crazy people were stripping the shops and pharmacies of this stuff because they believed it stopped the CV19, when did that change?

HoffiCoffi13 · 13/04/2020 09:53

Were they TJH130? I never heard that, and there was always plenty of ibruprofen to be had round here. It was paracetamol that people panic bought here.

TJH130 · 13/04/2020 10:00

Yeah. I'm suffering from Toothache which cant be sorted until restrictions are dropped and Ibuprofen was the recommended pain killer and it was impossible to buy it for a couple of weeks because the way stores had been stripped of it.

Then these are the same idiots that were panic buying bottled water, most likely because they could see the stores had lots of it, therefore they must grab it

PurpleDaisies · 13/04/2020 10:05

Flowers @TJHT. Toothache is the worst.

Jollitwiglet · 13/04/2020 10:07

My toddler was given some a couple of weeks ago under medical advice. She had a fever of 39.5 after paracetomol. Unlikely to be related to Coronavirus, but couldn't be ruled out as we all agreed it would be safer for her to remain at home

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 13/04/2020 10:09

Ibuprofen is incredibly hard on even the healthiest stomach. No one should take it unless they really need to

Namelesswonder · 13/04/2020 10:23

Yes, still taking it daily for arthritis. If I had CV symptoms I would probably try and reduce the number I take but until then I don’t see the issue.

MeadowHay · 13/04/2020 11:20

@JustStayHome I know. 3 of my close relatives are a doctor, a pharmacist and a Physician Associate, two of whom work in pediatrics. I was just correcting what the risk of ibuprofen was in chicken pox as the suggestion that 'it makes chicken pox worse' is inaccurate. Apologies if it came across like I was trying to tell everyone to give it to their children with chicken pox, not my intention!

TJH130 · 13/04/2020 11:24

@Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow indeed, I ended up with a couple of ulcers in the back of my throat but its the only pain killer with this toothache that can control it for a little while.

Wingedharpy · 13/04/2020 11:42

@Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow:

Agree with you completely.
It wouldn't be my off the shelf drug of choice, for numerous reasons regardless of Covid 19.
There are occasions however, when it is the only thing that seems to help eg. dental pain.
Use as infrequently as possible for as short a period as possible and protect your gut .

Prescribed medication is a different issue.

I use iboprofen because it works for my headaches, and for me, paracetamol only works for headaches that have been caused by a cold.

However, I sort of get the OP's dilemma. Runners take iboprofen for small and not so small niggles so that they can still run. There are several reasons why that is not very sensible, but I think it can affect your heart if you run. So my dilemma arises if I have a headache, but I know I want to go for a run later - ie will my body know I took the ibuprofen for the headache and not for an aching knee or whatever.

The same applies if I take iboprofen for a migraine-type headache today, and start showing covid symptoms tomorrow.

But I would say the chances are pretty low of that happening, not least because my headaches tend to be hormonal, so I only get them a couple of times in the month, if that.

cologne4711 · 13/04/2020 12:01

I can't spell ibUprofen!

U2HasTheEdge · 13/04/2020 12:08

I am still using it if needed.

Paracetamol doesn't agree with me. I don't take pain medication regularly but I did have some Ibuprofen the other day.

Gammeldragz · 13/04/2020 12:18

I'm still using ibuprofen and advising patients to do so. As long as you don't actually have Covid19 it is absolutely fine to take and it has a short half life.

Kuponut · 13/04/2020 12:54

GP's advice (we had an appointment the other day for something) was that it's fine to take for pain relief as long as you're not showing symptoms of Covid-19. I've been trying to move over to paracetamol more for a while but ibuprofen works better when my joint pain is at its worst really.

thegcatsmother · 13/04/2020 13:02

Not allowed to use ibuprofen anyway, so paracetamol in my household (for me anyway).

GirlCalledJames · 13/04/2020 13:56

Ibuprofen has a half life of 1.8 to 2 hours. It’s eliminated really fast. It’s not hanging around the day after you took it.
And of course it affects your whole body while it’s working. It can’t possibly know what body part you think you took it for.

Pelleas · 13/04/2020 13:58

I took some the other day for a headache - obviously I wouldn't have if I had had respiratory symptoms.

Rebelwithallthecause · 13/04/2020 14:01

I will use it again in future as I don’t have lung issues. But not right now

DH and DS who have Asthma and other breathing issues have never been ok to take it

I’m currently off it due to pregnancy anyway.

I prefer a nice bit of codein if pain is really bad, but otherwise ibuprofen seems to work best for me.

blossombabies · 13/04/2020 15:15

i gave some to my daughter last night as she suffers from joint pain
i prefer it to paracetamol
