If I have symptoms can dh still go out for exercise/food?

Firstly, please be nice. I feel bloody awful, hard to breathe, everything hurts etc. Please don't call me stupid or selfish.

Secondly I need the actual advice/rules, not the MN opinion.

I have symptoms - cough, difficulty breathing, aching, exhausted, temp. So I am isolating in one bedroom. I have dh and 2 dc. And a dog. Are they still allowed to go out for one walk a day, obviously making sure social distancing (easy as never see anyone where we dog walk).

I thought they could (based on a friend who had to do it a few weeks ago). But then thought maybe I'd read different and now in confused.

They are allowed to go for a walk, i did double check that as i have been wanting to continue with doing exercise and FIL thought you couldn't.

Quartz2208 · 11/04/2020 13:27

@NK346f2849X127d8bca260

No you are no longer able to go for a walk as someone said the guidance has changed it now says:

Do not leave your home if you have symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) or live with someone who does.

This is called self-isolation.

If you are self-isolating, you must:

not leave your home for any reason – if you need food or medicine, order them by phone or online, or ask someone else to drop them off at your home
not have visitors, such as friends and family, in your home
You can use your garden, if you have one. Any exercise should be taken at home.

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 11/04/2020 13:35

I will still run - in circle around the garden.

I don't want to join in on the pile-on but I honestly don't think this is even very sensible unless you have a massive garden and can stay well away from any neighbours who might be outside. I would do some exercise indoors if you feel up to it until you are better.

Quartz thanks for pointing that out, that has obviously just been unpdated as i did double check a couple of days ago. We have been nowhere near a shop, Ocado left our shopping on doorstep as did a relative.

shineaflight · 11/04/2020 13:46

@NK346f2849X127d8bca260 well then you need to recheck.

You can not go for a walk whilst self isolating!

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 11/04/2020 13:54

Yes i have just rechecked ,that is a very recent change, i double checked a couple of days ago when FIL called and at that point it said you could go out for exercise.

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 11/04/2020 13:58

I haven't actually been out since that change was made, i certainly wouldn't put anyone at risk, my son is still ill 12 days later.

Talia99 · 11/04/2020 13:59

@ChoporNot, unfortunately you appear to have misread the original guidance (before it was changed). The screenshot @PaintforKitchen has kindly posted has the rules for the person with symptoms in the second paragraph. They says that the person with symptoms must not go out at all.

The next (third) paragraph addresses the people in the household not showing symptoms - at the time they were allowed to go out for exercise. That is the part that has now changed.

Therefore, you have been breaking the rules from the beginning, even if inadvertently.

Porcupineinwaiting · 11/04/2020 14:01

The safe distance from someone running has now been shown to be 10m. That's why Parisians have now been banned from running during the day.

@ChoporNot wonder how many people you've infected eh? Let's hope that theyonlyget mild cases.

LittleFoxKit · 11/04/2020 14:05

Its a bit screwed up if the advice has changed since the letter as my area only got the letter a few days ago... so most will be following the advice of the letter and assuming its up to date due to when we all received it..

LittleCabbage · 11/04/2020 14:09

Interestingly, the info on NHS Direct Wales still states you can exercise when self-isolating, as long as you keep social distance. So I think it is unfair to pounce on PPs about this, as there is clearly conflicting advice out there.

If I have symptoms can dh still go out for exercise/food?
RichardMarxisinnocent · 11/04/2020 14:13

Yes you have never been allowed to exercise with symptoms (although I can see it is confusingly written).

Yes you have. I live alone and coughed a bit more than normal for a couple of days just after lockdown so self isolated for 7 days and checked the guidelines for people living alone and it absolutely did say not to go out other than for exercise and to keep 2 metres form anyone if you did take exercise. It now says don't go out at all.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 11/04/2020 14:24

I can't find the old living alone guidelines but the general ones used to say this

If I have symptoms can dh still go out for exercise/food?
Chippydippy · 11/04/2020 14:26

For those that are saying the guidelines have only just changed. No they haven't. I've been isolating for 12 days now due to symptoms, checking the gov website on day 1 of my isolation it was very clear that not one person from my household should be leaving the house. Simple

RichardMarxisinnocent · 11/04/2020 14:27

The latest ones say this

If I have symptoms can dh still go out for exercise/food?
ChoporNot · 11/04/2020 14:27

@LittleCabbage That (albeit not the Welsh one) is what DH and I saw. And understood to read that it was OK to exercise as long as you felt well enough and kept at a distance. Which is what we have (had) been doing.

I knew we were not breaking the rules as we saw them at the time.

In addition on a running forum I am on, it was confirmed numerous times, as the same guidelines at the time that everyone else understood. It was even in a pinned post to stop the piling onto people that has happened here.

I have today, after finding out that the guidelines have changed, informed the admins of said forum so they can update their info to runners.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 11/04/2020 14:35

The initial few paragraphs and sections on the gov.uk page about what to do if someone has symptoms just mention staying at home and remaining at home. When you scroll further down it's the section I have posted a pic of entitled "While you are staying at home, make sure you do the following things" which expands further on what staying at home means. The version I have posted is from 26th March which is the day I after I started self isolating.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 11/04/2020 14:39

And this is from nhs.uk as it looked on 8th April

If I have symptoms can dh still go out for exercise/food?
Bluebooby · 11/04/2020 14:45

Chippydippy 23rd of march screenshot here. The guidance has changed since then.

If I have symptoms can dh still go out for exercise/food?
Bluebooby · 11/04/2020 14:46

Sorry for badly drawn red circle. It's a screenshot of a screenshot.

Quartz2208 · 11/04/2020 14:58

What I dont get is though at the time of lockdown no one is allowed out apart from to exercise so what is the point of having self isolation with symptoms?

I think (and it is very typical of Government guidance) looking at NHS Direct Wales they havent changed the self isolation guidelines since before the lockdown. It clearly says just about if you have symptoms dont leave the house and then they contradict themselves! But that said I think it was suppose to be for those on the 14 day.

I truly still cant believe though that people genuinely thought it was ok if they have a temp/cough/breathlessness that they could leave - this is so infectious it is droplet based and remains in the air that no one with symptoms should leave the house.

I get its tough (I had a 7 day myself with similar) but it is entirely necessary. Surely rather than looking for the slightest loophole in rules commonsense should have been used and stay in.

My DH is a runner and he found the 14 days stuck in (he never had symptoms unlike the rest of us) awful and tough but he did it

The 23rd March screenshot was BEFORE lockdown took place so it made sense to have once a day exercise. After that one assumes it should have been changed otherwise self isolation would be no different to everything else

swishthecat · 11/04/2020 14:58

The advice on gov.uk still says you can go out for supplies if you have to.

"If you live with others and you or one of them have symptoms that may be caused by coronavirus (COVID-19), then household members must stay at home and not leave your house for 14 days (more information in the ending self-isolation section below). If possible, you should not go out even to buy food or other essentials, and any exercise should be taken within your home. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in your house became ill.

If not possible, then you should do what you can to limit your social contact when you leave the house to get supplies."

LittleCabbage · 11/04/2020 14:59

@ChoporNot

Yes, I was self-isolating for 2 weeks, which ended last Friday (3rd). The NHS advice in England definitely said during the first week of our isolation, that exercising was allowed for households with symptoms.

So assuming that changed at some point during our 2 weeks, we have been unknowingly disobeying the regulations. I did not have any reason to recheck the info, as I was unaware the advice had changed.

The people here slagging off others are directing their anger at the wrong people. Blame the agencies who wrote the initial advice, and then changed it without any publicity.

PurpleDaisies · 11/04/2020 15:01

chippy the advice changed when the page was update on April 9th.

If I have symptoms can dh still go out for exercise/food?
Quartz2208 · 11/04/2020 15:10

Was it definitely just done on Thursday because the screenshots and when other people checked were before lockdown took place.

So before the 23rd March (when most seem to have checked it) going out with symptoms makes sense. Afterwards self isolation and lockdown would have pretty much been the same thing

And if it did take them that long to change it is pretty bad on their part that it took so long in lockdown to update self isolation.

That date just says the last time it was changed not that was the change that took place and indeed they did change it to 7 days with symptoms at some point and when I started mine it was like Chippy very clear I shouldnt leave the house. Indeed it appears it is changed and reviewed every 5 days so that date doesnt help!

@LittleCabbage did you check after the announcement on March 23rd because that would have been a public announcement
