Probably an odd question to ask, but I think my odds are slightly in my favour to survive it.
Just wondering whether a lot of you actually fear death from it or not?
I'm aware obviously that it seems somewhat indiscriminate in who it takes out in some exceptional cases.
I've survived something similar, but I hope I'm healthy enough to beat it. If it's my time to go, then so be, we choose not the day nor the hour...
What do you think your odds are?
For reference I'm 39 and a smoker Blush

I think yes but also scared I’d die from the anxiety or a panic attack from having it 😳

Balmytissues · 11/04/2020 09:32

I suppose I'm asking as some people on here seem OTT about it and yet we read about people having friends over, going to parks etc. who clearly don't fear it at all.

I’m hoping for the best-
In my favour:
I’m under 40 (just)
Not overweight
O blood group
Fit
Non smoker
Hopefully low viral load as working from home and not visiting shops

Against me:
Dreadful hay fever

@Changedname78 PMSL. Sometimes I think worrying about the blooming thing is more likely to kill me off lol.

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 11/04/2020 09:33

Honestly, depends on how bad I get it. I have severe asthma so I could be one that doesn't. But I am young. Relative healthy albeit overweight and I have a young child so I bloody hope I survive it.

I reckon 60/40 to survive

Noworrieshere · 11/04/2020 09:34

I'm only in my 40s, am fit and healthy and don't have any of the risk factors so on paper yes I will survive. But it's the total randomness of it that gets me. Some people just completely randomly get it much worse than others so I'm taking nothing for granted.

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/04/2020 09:34

I’m 99% confident I’d be fine and can’t honestly say that catching the virus worries me more than any other illness.

I’m following the guidelines because I appreciate the risk to others and understand the need to limit cases to a number that can be safely managed by the NHS but I am not concerned for myself.

Balmytissues · 11/04/2020 09:35

Typhoonmarie - why is your blood group relevant? I'm O negative (think I'm the type that's a universal donor?).

I've got a slight cough and have been tested and sent home from work. Expecting my results in the next few days. I don't think that I have it as it is so minor, but if it is then its nowhere near as bad a si feared it would be for me.

StealthPolarBear · 11/04/2020 09:35

Yes I suspect I'll get it (or have had it) mildly.

Rebelwithallthecause · 11/04/2020 09:37

I would be hopeful

I’m 34, non smoker, don’t drink much but none at all right now
However I am heavily pregnant so less lung capacity possibly right now and slightly lower immune system.

However, I’m generally fit an health. Stay at home. O type blood group.
Get plenty of vitamin D and eat very healthily with plenty of fruit and veg.

catsandlavender · 11/04/2020 09:37

I hope so. I’m 26, lower side of the healthy weight range, non smoker, no underlying health conditions. My diet isn’t great though - lots of saturated fat Confused

CrunchyCarrot · 11/04/2020 09:38

No. Am mid 60s, my health isn't great, I have Hashimoto's (may or may not increase my risk depending who you talk to), have issues with mould that has left me with a slight wheeze, but more importantly am very weak and unfit and don't think my body could endure a bad case of it. I have a very specific diet and back problems (dread having to be in bed with any illness, to be honest).

Typhoonmarie · 11/04/2020 09:38

There’s some evidence that o blood groups are less susceptible

Chocolatear · 11/04/2020 09:39

I'm quite worried about getting it. I'm in my 50's, overweight and have asthma. I had pneumonia a couple of years ago and spent a week in hospital. I was quite unwell.

I use inhaled steroids but not the very strong ones so I'm not on the shielding list. I've only been out twice in the last 3 weeks. DH is working from home, he goes shopping.

PaddyF0dder · 11/04/2020 09:39

On an individual level, everyone who contracts it will (statistically) survive it.

On a population level, of course that’s not possible.

But yes. I’m young and healthy. I’m not worried about catching it. But I’m worried about spreading it.

Balmytissues · 11/04/2020 09:41

Is your blood type relevant? Two of you have mentioned that now - I've never heard anything about that?

OP posts:
everythingisginandroses · 11/04/2020 09:41

I think I've had it, mending now 26 days on. It has been nasty and threatening at worst, boring and frustrating at best. Remember the stats: 98% survival rate.

lynsey91 · 11/04/2020 09:43

No I don't think I will survive it unless, of course, I only have it mildly.

I am mid 60's and have no real health issues but am overweight. The main reason I don't think I will survive it is because I had swine flu and was really ill with it. It completely knocked me out and took me a few months to recover.

I do believe when it is our time to die we die so it may be that I am meant to die from this.

I am doing all I can to avoid it though. I haven't been further than my garden for 21 days and on the 2 occasions DH has been out for food he has taken his shoes off outside, showered and changed his clothes

legodisasterzone · 11/04/2020 09:43

I’m doubtful.
Mid 40s but I have asthma and use a bronchial dilator.
Also have hay fever.

It terrifies me as I’m a carer for my daughter.

Balmytissues · 11/04/2020 09:43

everyone who contracts it will (statistically) survive it. Lol

Ye, that's why they're reporting deaths every day.

OP posts:
OhClover · 11/04/2020 09:43

I think it’s likely I’ll survive it (30s, healthy weight and no known health issues) but I can’t help but fixate on the “what if”

Minai · 11/04/2020 09:44

I’m not sure. I have asthma which is often triggered by a virus. I can imagine if I get it I will possibly need at least oxygen in hospital and whether there would be capacity for me...

LajesticVantrashell · 11/04/2020 09:45

I should be ok. 40, just tipping into the overweight category. don't smoke, relatively fit. I expect to be knocked for six if I do get it but weirdly, reading the threads on here from people who have it has made me more prepared. I know which days will be tough, I know it's a test of endurance and mental resilience too. I'm not trying to get it, but I'm not actively avoiding it either (as in, not washing food etc...)
