Probably an odd question to ask, but I think my odds are slightly in my favour to survive it.
Just wondering whether a lot of you actually fear death from it or not?
I'm aware obviously that it seems somewhat indiscriminate in who it takes out in some exceptional cases.
I've survived something similar, but I hope I'm healthy enough to beat it. If it's my time to go, then so be, we choose not the day nor the hour...
What do you think your odds are?
For reference I'm 39 and a smoker Blush

Yes pretty sure myself and my husband have survived it and mightily relieved due to some serious health conditions

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 11/04/2020 10:45

Please stop quoting the 98% survival rate as though that is everyone's chances.
It may be 98% overall but this is not across all age groups/those with underlying conditions.
I can't remember the stats off the top of my head but if you are in one of the vulnerable groups (take over 70), your survival rate might be 85% whereas if you are under 30 it might be 99.98%.
It is not a 98% survival rate across the board.

I have no idea if I'd make it or not. Every time we transmit it we give it a chance to mutate into something nastier. There's a fair chance there are already multiple strains. Viral load seems to matter and I'm not at risk there. DH has awful asthma so the kids or I got it we'd move him into the annex.

Maisieme · 11/04/2020 10:46

I’m worried. I’m 63, overweight, have poor mobility with ME and Hashimotos Thyroiditis. Very unfit because of the ME.
My parents lived into their 90s so I have good genes, but who knows? I’m not ready to go yet....

bengalcat · 11/04/2020 10:46

I work on the frontline . For all I know I may have already had it asymptomatically . Am never ill anyway - cant remember the last time I had a day off work - prob @ 20+ years ago . No health issues and not overweight . Mid 50's . Majority of people survive .
Take the view I'd likely be ok but of course you never know as it can be a nasty bug . I take the pragmatic view if I get it I get and if I die I die .

CharDeeMacDennis · 11/04/2020 10:49

I think the odds are good for me.

I'm 41. Normal BMI.

Think am O blood - vaguely remember seeing it in maternity notes

Female

Never normally catch anything. Never had flu or chest infection. Virtually never catch a cold and if I do it goes in a day or two. Actually had one a few weeks ago and was v surprised as it had been so long since I'd had one - and all that happened was a stuffy nose and mild headache for 2 days.

On the other hand, I used to smoke, stopped in 2013, and I am not fit at all, really sedentary, in fact.

PlanDeRaccordement · 11/04/2020 10:51

Well, going by the statistics for my age group plus my chronic health conditions I have a 90% chance of surviving or 10% chance of dying. At least I’m a woman! Otherwise the odds would be worse.

Most people have a 99.9% chance of surviving.

MsAwesomeDragon · 11/04/2020 10:53

I think I'll survive but think I could be quite ill. Staying at home bed rest type of quite ill, not in the same league as hospitalisation type illness. I'm 40, overweight and have type 2 diabetes. But I'm female which statistically means I have a much higher chance of survival than a man with the same age with the same condition.

My parents won't be so lucky. My dad is a man (obviously) in his 70s with a heart condition, T2 diabetes and severe asthma. He's unlikely to survive without ICU. He has had a lot of time in hospital over the years due to complications of respiratory illnesses. He's very, very scared, especially since 2 of his friends who were healthier than him to begin with have already died from CV.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 11/04/2020 10:55

I had H1N1 swine flu which absolutely floored me like @lynsey91 but unlike her I feel quite confident about dealing with Corona.
I have convinced myself that I've built up a better immune system as a result.
I'm not old or overweight and in reasonable nick, so I'm not getting too anxious.

OuterMongolia · 11/04/2020 10:56

I'm confident I'd survive - in my 40s, female, non smoker, overweight but not obese, fit and healthy with no underlying conditions (that I know of).

My dad is 83 and asthmatic so he's high risk. But to be honest, being sick for two weeks followed by death isn't the worst way to go compared to some of the other things that might happen to him in the next few years (eg dementia, chronic pain, loss of dignity).

BlueBrian · 11/04/2020 10:57

Doubt it, being one of the shielded ones, I'm not really expecting much treatment, except a very large dose of morphine.

ifonly4 · 11/04/2020 10:59

I haven't got any health factors, but I've had pneumonia twice and from my experience I don't know how I'd survive it without antibiotics (which apparently don't work on a virus), so I am apprehensive about it.

I've made an effort to eat really healthily for the last couple of months, take vitamins/minerals every other day in the hope my immune system is as good as it could be.

Ughmaybenot · 11/04/2020 10:59

It doesn’t worry me at all. If I get it, I’d have very good odds. I’m a woman, I’m 26, I don’t smoke and never really have done, I’m fit and active (I ride, surf and generally live an outdoors lifestyle on our farm), I’m not overweight, I don’t have any previous for serious respiratory illnesses nor do I have anything like asthma etc.
I’d worry more about my husband as he is, obviously, a man, and he smokes... he’d definitely still survive it, or have as good a chance as any but it may well hit him harder... not only that but we’d feel the loss of income if he was unable to work for a few weeks 😬
As it is, we came back from travelling in early February and he was very poorly with a dry cough and temperature then, so not completely convinced he hasn’t already had it. I caught it too but to a lesser extent.

SimonJT · 11/04/2020 11:00

I don’t have a spleen (well, I have a very small spleen) so most likely not, although my consultants are arguing about this as my lack of spleen makes me vulnerable to bacterial infection but doesn’t appear to make me overly vulnerable to viruses, for example I find colds clear up very quickly.

Reginabambina · 11/04/2020 11:04

I have no risk factors. The chances of dying from anything is pretty low in the first place but from this extremely so. The only thing is that I might have some undiagnosed underlying health conditions, one never knows.

Reginabambina · 11/04/2020 11:05

I also have a suspicion that I had it in feb but it was quite mild so I’m not certain.

ginghamstarfish · 11/04/2020 11:07

Not feeling very positive about it, not O blood type, autoimmune condition, bit overweight, age against me ... will try my best to not get it in the first place. On the plus side, I'm reasonably fit, eat healthily, lots of Vitamin D, non smoker, etc, so have to weigh this up against the negatives.

mumme111 · 11/04/2020 11:08

I'm scared to get it as Im sure I'll die I'm 36 overweight high blood pressure prediabetic and generally unfit through bad mental health x

lotusbell · 11/04/2020 11:15

I'm nearly 40, not the fittest but no health issues. I have a fear of not being able to breathe so the idea of getting this really panics me but I think I would be ok, I'd hope so.

HollyGoLoudly1 · 11/04/2020 11:17

No but I have zero risk factors. And I'm 70% sure I've already had it.

Mawbags · 11/04/2020 11:19

Fat exsmoker with a raging autoimmune disease?

Am deid palHmm

VettiyaIruken · 11/04/2020 11:22

No. It would kill me. I'm in the shielded group. The doctor phoned me to discuss options and long story short I now have a DNR in place.

littlepeas · 11/04/2020 11:27

Most likely I would be ok, but it still makes me nervous.

37
Borderline BMI (teeter around 25), but am fairly muscly.
Yoga teacher/practitioner - good lung capacity and fairly fit
Smoked for a few years when very young - stopped on 21st birthday
Don’t drink alcohol (used to, never that much)
Have had 2 chest infections requiring antibiotics in the last 10 years
Healthy diet
Blood group is B+
Generally look after myself and have a healthy lifestyle, plenty of sleep, etc.

Still makes me nervous.

littlepeas · 11/04/2020 11:28

It’s interesting how this virus has made many of us look at our lifestyles - past and present - and the possible affects on our health.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/04/2020 11:32

I'm on the shielded list with severe asthma. I think I am definitely more likely to need a hospital bed and oxygen in particular but I think at 40, I think I would be more likely to live than survive.
