Is it weird to buy something for the binmen?

We moved house before they advised against moving etc (we had already exchanged)

We have had loads of cardboard and rubbish etc and the bin men on Wednesday took it all, I said thank you out of the window and the guy gave me a thumbs up. But I just think it's so unfair they have to work (although I'm grateful they do!) when it's putting their lives at risk.
A lot of people are doing things for the NHS and key workers that are obvious, but I feel as though not much is being done for who I think are also brave people.

So is it weird if I buy them something for the next time they come? Some Easter eggs or choc? DP said it's like I take pity on them but I don't want it to look like that.

Otherwise any ideas on what I can get? I'm concerned buying alcohol could get them in trouble but tell me if I'm wrong!

Some people tip the bin men at Christmas etc. Would you be able to put a tenner (or fiver) in an envelope so they could buy some tea/biscuits etc.

Although I don’t know if that’s weird either.

I always want to thank people but get anxious about being weird.

I give the bin men beers at Christmas and was thinking of doing it this week because of everything that’s going on. Go for it.

So alcohol is okay?

Feel like a tenner won't go far when there's like 5 people - id rather just buy the stuff

It’s normal at Christmas, but tbh at the minute I’m not sure they’d be allowed or feel comfortable taking it, due to contamination concerns.

Actually had a chat about this with DH the other day. When the whole virus thing calms down we plan on giving the binmen and our postman a tip. The postman especially has been excellent. We will probably give €20 each. Honestly I think they will much prefer cash to chocolate.

My partner is a bin man. He receives cards, money, some food etc for doing his job- Honestly, I find it extremely weird.

buzzwizz619 · 09/04/2020 18:21

My friend is a bin man, he's appreciating edible gifts atm 😃

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 09/04/2020 18:25

We gave our bin men a packet of mint penguins. King of biscuits. We got a thumbs up in return.

My son (postman) has been left a couple of small gifts this week - a bag of sweets and a card from a child and a couple of bottles of beer and a note from someone else. He has been delighted on each occasion.

WakeAndBake · 09/04/2020 18:44

Bin men are definitely pleased for cash, booze or a tin of sweets. Very thoughtful of you!

If you get the same team every time it would be fine but if they change around like ours do you might be giving it to the wrong ones.

Spied · 09/04/2020 18:49

I'm with your DP.

I was thinking the same this morning. Wasn't our collection but ds and I were on a bike ride and it occurred to me how much they are touching everything and thought I'd like to show my appreciation.

DazedandConcerned · 09/04/2020 19:04

Been giving my bin men 12 packs of lager. Going down incredibly well! Young man made sure he got it into the cab quickly as it was his previous cargo Grin

I just sat it on the kerb when I heard them coming. Stepped back to my door, more than 2m away, and chatted with them from a distance. From my experience they'll really appreciate you doing it.

Marigold101 · 09/04/2020 19:15

I gave our postie a box of chocolates today,he's a star though and always goes out of his way to leave parcels in my safe place. Not as exciting as it sounds Wink. I'm sure your bin men will appreciate it.

I have seen that some family’s with children have made a colourful drawing with thank you in the middle taped to the top of the wheely bin.
When this is over I plan on putting a six pack of beer on the top with a thank you.

I was thinking of giving the bin men (we have a woman bin man too :-), a gift but I missed this week. I'll do it next. I've given to posties and delivery people.
