just that, are we actually going to have one? what if the peak isn't as bad as they are expecting?

How would it be possible not to have a peak?
Of course there will be one. But we won't know it is the peak until there is a sustained drop below it. So we'll only know it was the peak after the event.
If its not as bad as expected then less people may die. But there is no set figure for expected deaths, so it not being as bad as it could be will have little effect overall.

Umm, it’s impossible for there not to be. It just describes the case distribution. So unless you think nearly a thousand people a day are going to continue dying of coronavirus, forever, then there will be a peak.

Looks to me like the government timed the lockdown perfectly. The number of new cases has been steady for 8 days now. Studies show that the lockdown had an effect in Spain, Italy etc. at around 21-28 days after implementation. We’re at Day 17 and the numbers of new cases aren’t rising.

HoffiCoffi13 · 09/04/2020 18:14

There has to be a peak, unless you think we’ll have 1000 cases a day every day until we get a vaccine?
If the peak isn’t as bad as they’re expecting... fabulous news! Fewer people will have died, which means the measures will have worked.

If we don’t have a peak that’s going to scupper any plans for easing lockdown restrictions presuming they’re planning for numbers to drop and maintain at a much lower level.

The NHS is coping at the moment but it’s at the expense of almost every thing else. That’s not sustainable long term.

Appuskidu · 09/04/2020 18:19

Can you explain how there could possibly NOT be a peak?

Derbygerbil · 09/04/2020 18:20

Unless we literally all die, there has to be a peak!

Matildathehun77 · 09/04/2020 18:26

But we won't know we're at peak until it's passed, you can only ever see a peak in hindsight can't you?
Let's hope it isn't as bad as expected...., time will tell.
