Does anyone think they have caught it going to the shops?

Pooshweens · 08/04/2020 21:33

Going to the shops is the only time I come close to another person, outside of my household. And sometimes it is of course less than 2m

Just wondering if anyone has caught the virus, from grocery shopping?

OP posts:

I'm thinking off complaining to the health department as obviously the company i work for dont care and all this for bad pay. After all this is over I'm getting a new job

Jenasaurus · 09/04/2020 00:37

I was reading a report the other day from a doctor on ICU, I was reading it out of an interest in what sort of care was given following Boris being admitted. The Doctor said the paitents on the ventilators were mostly male and elderly but not all, he said there was one lady who was staying at home and only went out for a weekly shop at the supermarket, and sadly she caught it and passed away following being admitted to ICU, the fact the doctor commented on how she caught it struck me, as that is what we are all doing to keep safe. I guess no one can say if they will catch it or not when shopping, all we can do is follow the rules and try and keep a distance from other shoppers, wash our hands etc

neveradullmoment99 · 09/04/2020 00:41

@Jenesaurus - the doctor cannot possibly know that. She could have done other things. She may have had visitors etc. Could be numerous ways. Just trying to reassure you.

MinkowskisButterfly · 09/04/2020 00:42

@PotteryLottery Asda supposedly have that as well yet it isnt enforced and nobody is paying a blind bit of notice to it. Once this is all over I will be going elsewhere to shop (as will many others I have spoken to nhs workers etc) to a place that gives a damn about customers and colleagues safety (I know first hand how much this supermarket care about safety surrounding cv - it is not at all from a certain store that I have seen/had dealings with).

HonkersVonFlapperson · 09/04/2020 00:43

@Pooshweens are you isolating your post and deliveries?

@Jenasaurus please can you share that report?

I think many people who are "only going to the supermarket once a week" are actually doing a lot more than they are admitting. I have had friends who have said they haven't been out for weeks but there's pictures of them walking to the park.

The judgement and self righteous is not helping with people being honest.

gluteustothemaximus · 09/04/2020 00:46

If you're going to catch it now, tesco will be the place.

It’s where we pick up all our bugs. People cough everywhere (never covering mouths). Seen people sneezing all over the self service tills (again not covering).

People were panic buying in their thousands around here. Not one of them thought it was a bad idea to mix in big crowds with this highly contagious bug?

Poor supermarket staff.

Keepdistance · 09/04/2020 01:03

Well I think almost more likely from the shopping itself. All the surfaces and most people not disinfecting the goods.
I'm not sure delivery is safer. We had one last week and now have coughs (both adults) had sore throat too. So we've caught something. If the incubation is actually 5 days then it's almost spot on. So could be the goods or the person.
No matter what you do goods are touched by at least 2 people. Stacking and till or picked for home delivery.
Imo they need to stop putting especially vulnerable people's food in the actual store it should go to a warehouse so only staff there touching it not hundreds a day in the store.
But also the panic buying means the shelves have been recently stocked rather than days before so more people touching it within the 72 or whatever hours

MarieKlepto · 09/04/2020 01:24

OP, yeah, I'd go with that. The nearest supermarket to us is an ASDA (we usually use others within walking distance but have been trying to limit urban walking about). Unfortunately, all seems "as we were" Outside and getting in now really efficient. Once inside, still a free for all. Staff chatting a few inches from their mates who have pitched up, shelf stackers just reaching round you, loads of close contact with parents coralling kids on scooters, etc. Will take our business to the Tesco (ours anyway) who are taking everything super seriously.

SauvignonGrower · 09/04/2020 01:37

I got a sore throat and slight cough 5 days after receiving and unpacking a Tescos delivery. I wasn't careful with wiping down each item of food and then washing hands afterwards. No other explanation for getting ill because entire household fully isolated for over 2 weeks. Have felt very rough with an odd feeling in my chest, but seem to be over it. Maybe it wasn't COVID, but it was definitely virus brought in by the delivery.

MigginsMs · 09/04/2020 01:38

Not me or anyone I know of but given the photos of hordes of people cramming into supermarkets before lockdown surely there must have been quite a lot of spread there?

EightNineTen · 09/04/2020 01:44

My local asda is awful. They made a great play of the outside queue, the arrows on the floor etc but when I went last week you could just wander in so it was packed and few people were adhering to the arrow system or social distancing, least of all the staff!

Time40 · 09/04/2020 02:09

I've been shopping only twice since lockdown, and the weird thing I've found is that out and about on the streets, most people are really good about keeping a distance. In the shops (or at least, in the two I've been in) they're really, really not. I have felt unsafe, and in the Sainsbury's I was in two days ago, I got the feeling that all the staff were very stressed, unhappy and jumpy.

Nannamia · 09/04/2020 02:10

@Keepdistance @SauvignonGrower My DH and I have been in voluntary isolation for a month now. We live in Australia and qualify for supermarket delivery because of our age (both 67). I disinfect everything, wash fruit and veg in hot soapy water etc. Sometimes I stand in front of a sink full of hot bananas and think wtf am I doing Grin. So thanks for your posts, they'll keep me on the straight and narrow. I hope you're both feeling well soon.

bottlenose301 · 09/04/2020 02:12

I went to a large Tesco today for the first time and it was quite stressful, even in the queue to get in, the man behind me kept getting too close to me. I don't have gloves or a mask, all I had was my little bottle of hand gel that I kept applying.

The one way system doesn't work because people don't follow them. Others are leaving their trolleys bang in the middle of the aisle while they browse.

I did feel like if I'm going to catch this it'll be there.

Randomschoolworker19 · 09/04/2020 02:21

I find my big local Tesco to be very good.

I go very late at night about an hour before closing and there is no queue, just walk straight in. There are clean trolleys waiting by the entrance and staff spray hand sanitizer to your hands as you walk in.

I wear a FFP3 mask and put gloves on as I'm going in. There are 2M markings and one way markings along the floor and I find the people in the store late on are usually quite sensible.

Staff at the checkouts are behind plexi-glass. I pay with contactless and once I'm out the store I throw my gloves in the bin and then don a new pair.

Once I'm home I wipe down all my shopping with anti-bac wipes and soap, my wallet, keys and phone too. I then strip and put all my clothes in a black bin bag and then go and have a shower. Dry myself with a clean towel and then the towel goes in the washer with my clothes.

Get dressed in new clothes, shopping goes away and then I dispose of the black bin bag and gloves I wore home.

Wash my hands again and then job done.

Hollyhead · 09/04/2020 06:09

I am in an unusual position compared to everyone else in that having followed the C-19 crisis since January and realising it must be here and spreading by mid-Feb, I am now finally relaxed about my once weekly shop. I found mid-Feb - mid-March unbearable, with everyone just carrying on as normal.

Some friends etc. are terrified about going to the supermarket now, I'm like, if you weren't terrified during Feb half term you shouldn't be terrified now, it's much safer!

thecatneuterer · 09/04/2020 06:14

I got symptoms on Day 1 of lockdown (and I'm still not completely over it). So assuming average incubation of 4 or 5 days then the place I was most likely to catch it was Tesco, which was manic at the time I was there. However I was also in a lot of other places, and got petrol, so it really could have been from anywhere.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 09/04/2020 06:52

If you look at it the other way. Theres no reason to thi k you wonr catch it in the supermarket. However, supermarket shopping is something we all need to do one way or another.

By going as infrequently as you (in your own personal circumstances) can, you are reducing your exposure.

Howmanysleepsnow · 09/04/2020 07:02

Dh went out shopping 18 days ago. 8 days later he started with symptoms which have become severe. The last time he went it before that was 7 days before

Carbosug · 09/04/2020 07:20

I presume the only way you're likely to get it from going to the shops is if you rub your eyes nose or mouth while you're there or don't wash your hands when you get home and then have something to eat.

Unless someone stands really close to you coughing and sneezing.

moita · 09/04/2020 07:32

We go as little as possible. I don't touch my face etc and wash my hands as soon as I'm home. I also regularly disinfect our front door handle and bell but nothing else.

Have to say our sainsburys is very good - let people in gradually and most are observing social distancing. I walked out of Tesco because it was so busy - I'd rather pay more at sainsburys and feel safer but it seems like all shops differ.

Bubblebu · 09/04/2020 08:49

I am a breast cancer patient and I have been ordered into my hospital to have a post surgery wound treated - I really do not want to go (no choice public transport) and was surprised they phoned me yesterday and ordered me in.
Anyway I would like to see if I can go into the supermarket on my way home as ordinarily I never go out and last went to the shops over 3 weeks ago. What precautions should I take at the supermarket? Should I wear gloves? I do not have a mask.

Soubriquet · 09/04/2020 08:50

Well...I’m 99% sure I’ve had it and the only place I go really is work

Which is in a supermarket

So yes

BlueGheko · 09/04/2020 08:58

What on earth else could Tesco possibly do better under the circumstances?

Quite a lot. Screens for checkout staff for starters as it's impossible to stay 2m back when paying and the staff will have been in contact with hundreds of people. Closing for short periods throughout the day for restocking instead of forcing customers to come into close contact with staff and better education for staff, on several occasions I've been standing in my spot 2m behind the person in front only for staff members to walk right between us. Plus all the supermarkets were way too slow in introducing social distancing measures. Click and collect only for me now.

onlinelinda · 09/04/2020 09:33

I could have caught it at least 8 ways that I can think of, and probably more:

From DH, via his job
From a medical student I had lunch with
From an Italian, via his friend
From some children I looked after once
From my sister
From my daughter, via her job
From a pub worker I know
From my sister
