How come Cornwall's doing so 'well'?

I don't want to jinx it, and believe me I'm not complaining, but how is it that (so far!) Cornwall's escaped so lightly? I think there've been a total of 19 Covid19 deaths in the county? I know we're very rural here but it's an aging population, lots of interaction with extended families (grandparents caring for their grandchildren etc) and generally people are very sociable within their small communities. Besides what about all those second homers who are supposed to have swarmed down here from London? How come they didn't all bring it with them? I also know many local families where one parent travels 'upcountry', if not abroad, on a regular basis for work. How come they didn't bring it back with them before the lockdown, pass it to their children, their children spread it round school and the whole thing exploded locally? It's not like we're renownd for our exceptional healthcare provision.

Agree - having lived in London and now somewhere much much more rural where you can have a walk with the dog and either see people coming from a very long distance as its open fields or you dont see anyone at all!

It MUST be something to do with the large gaps between households. There are lots of very small villages whereas in London you could literally turn a corner and bump into someone

The surge in death numbers will happen next week.

Imapotato · 07/04/2020 17:27

I’m in the south west (not Cornwall), it seems the whole region is doing pretty well. It must have something to do with lower population density and fewer people to rely daily on public transport.

Healthyandhappy · 07/04/2020 17:29

Wait til summer if surfing comps are on all those people they bring. If everyone if cxc hols abroad they gonna swam to Cornwall and Devon xx

BrandyandBabycham · 07/04/2020 17:30

@EmergencyPractitioner why do you think that?

BrandyandBabycham · 07/04/2020 17:31

@ healthyandhappy they won’t be allowed to come in we’re still in lockdown

BrandyandBabycham · 07/04/2020 17:33

Sorry meant to put that name in italics

I'm also in SW and our numbers are v low locally. We have very low population density, small schools, lots of people are retired or wfh and poor public transport means not many people use it.

I'm wondering if the worst is yet to come, but as social distancing and isolation seems to have been v well adhered to from the off, then you would think the surge would be happening right now wouldn't you? The schools shut 2 weeks ago and a lot of people were already opting to wfh and keep their distance before that. Surely a sudden surge yet to come would indicate social distancing makes no difference?

KindKylie · 07/04/2020 17:58

We have been put on walks, runs and bike rides most days and seen a handful of people at most, and those only from a distance. It's so different to living in an urban area with little open space around. Our village is almost entirely made up of detached and semi detached houses, all with gardens plus allotments and driveways etc.

Orangeblossom78 · 07/04/2020 18:02

I'm in an urban area in SW and we have low figures too though, and quite a high older population (and lots of tourists normally from all over)..

i wonder about the SW being mainly white as seems higher cases of the virus in ethnic minorities? also less multi generational living due to this. perhaps

minisoksmakehardwork · 07/04/2020 18:03

East of England isn't too bad either. When I watched the news last night, South West was best with EoE being the next line up. I suspect a lot of it is down to a lot of less built up/more rural living.

Devon is perhaps a little worse off because for a lot of tourists, it isn't as far to travel to there so perhaps has a larger share of transient people in the area.

Background radiation from the radioactive rocks nuking the critters - the nuclear equivalent of hot sunshine zapping the flu in summer.

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 07/04/2020 18:13

I guess it’s just a case of rural communities and people not traveling from the city.

Picklypickles · 07/04/2020 18:23

I hope it continues to "do well" my nan went into a care home in Camborne in September, none of us has seen her in weeks now and she has dementia so probably very confused and lonely. My grandad is now on his own in their flat and pretty frail, we can't see him either as its 80 miles away from us. I'm very worried for them both.

itsacatslife7563 · 07/04/2020 18:26

North Devon Hospital have no deaths at the moment

littlemeitslyn · 07/04/2020 19:55

Intentification say what????

blue25 · 07/04/2020 20:01

It’s too early. The Cornwall death rate will go up significantly in the next couple of weeks.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 07/04/2020 20:02

Live in Cornwall
I think it is coming unfortunately speaking to friends in the NHS etc. They are all prepping for it. A bigger capacity morgue is being set up. A smaller hospital is being set up for palative care. The private hospital is joining forces with treliske. Think it might be taking other a&e cases not covid related

BubblyBarbara · 07/04/2020 20:08

Lack of 5G masts - it's obvious

You can laugh but if you look at the data of most cases in this country it correlates very well with the areas that are most populated and therefore likely to have 5G masts.

Cornwall is quite long and thin so the winds can blow across it easier keeping it clean

reefedsail · 07/04/2020 20:20

No new cases in Dorset today, apparently.

I can only imagine it's due to less dense population and lockdown coming much earlier in the curve.

VictoriaBun · 07/04/2020 20:25

I live in Cumbria, our numbers / deaths are shocking for our population , we are known to be very rural so unless we are full of non conforming numpties , who knows why we are so bad.

picklemewalnuts · 07/04/2020 20:28

Salt air? People used to be sent to the sea to help their lungs.

ThursdayLastWeek · 07/04/2020 20:37

I work at a popular mid cornwall attraction and we were exceptionally quiet the week before Mother’s Day and then we closed on that Sunday.

There were a few holiday makers, but nothing like the numbers you’d normally see - I think the message to Stay At Home had got through more than we expected.

I’ve basically spent the last two weeks waiting to get sick and so far so good.

I don’t think anyone was really thinking Cornish genes were superior sarky PP Grin

Millicent10 · 07/04/2020 20:42

Agree with people saying low population density and lack of public transport. I am in a bit of a backward area in the East of England and a lot of people were saying that we are behind because of low population density but also because people don’t have the money or inclination to go skiing in half term or pop over to Italy/Spain for a week here and there. Unfortunately we are now on a much more upwards curve.

ThursdayLastWeek · 07/04/2020 20:45

Oh and re: ski holidays - I believe a lot of school children were about to head off to north Italy but thankfully the advice not to go was made clear before they went.
